Gun lake is shaped like a butterfly; it has two halves that are somewhat symmetrical and shaped like the wings of a butterfly. In the southeast quarter is an island known as 'Party Island' to those that do not own it. The owner has then such filed a complaint and the island is no longer open to the public. Hence the name 'Party Island' was retired early summer of 2010. On the weekends many boats gather there because of the shallow, sandy rim around the island. Its official name is Orangeville Island. Other than Robbin's Bay, popular fishing spots include Pickerel Cove, on the southern shore, on the left 'wing' of the lake, Bairds Cove, and the many channels that protrude off the 'butterfly' part of the lake. It is the popular tourist destination in the summer. The shops and businesses sprinkled along the shores and inland enjoy that time of year. In the winter, many activities play a part in the lives of people that live there, such and Winterfest, where events such as a polar bear dip take place, and ice fishing in also a common sight in the cold months.

In the lake there are populations of Black Bullhead, Black Crappie, Bluegill, Bowfin, Brown Bullhead, Green Sunfish, Largemouth Bass, Longnose Gar, Muskie, Northern Pike, Rock Bass, Smallmouth Bass, Spotted Gar, Walleye, and Yellow Perch. Freshwater Crustaceans, known as Crayfish, also have some residency in the lake, and can be found in many of the shallows in the summertime as their young grow. The lake is most famous for its large Walleye population, although according to the last Michigan DNR report in 1991, they only make up about 8.6 percent of the lake's fish. Bullheads are the most prosperous species in the lake, although many of the other species exists peacefully despite their lower percentage of existence.

Awesome lakefront property!

Barry's home was perfect for our 4th of July vacation. His home is clean and had everything we needed. He was responsive to questions and made every effort to make our stay enjoyable. Definitely would rent his home again for another trip to beautiful Gun Lake!

Great place to bring your kids/grandkids!

  • 4 of 5

We really enjoyed our week at Point of View cottage! Everything we needed was generously provided. It's on a great part of Gun Lake, perfect for kids because it's shallow and sandy. Our grandkids, ages 8 and 6 3/4, loved the floating mat and raft and catching fish off the dock. They also loved the bunk beds! The bed In the master bedroom was extremely comfortable. We saw ducks, swans and a blue heron. The view is spectacular! All our worries melted away!

Thank you, Paxton Family, for sharing your cottage!

Perfect spot!

  • 5 of 5

I took my daughter, two grandkids and a three yr old black lab to this sweet cottage. We had a great stay! Owner has provided well with plenty of towels, life-jackets. Kitchen well-equipped for all you would ever need!

The location is perfect with just steps to the water! Two kayaks are available, my 14 yr old grandson loved kayaking daily with his dog by his side! We rented a pontoon boat one day and enjoyed seeing all of beautiful Gun Lake ! I had several questions prior to our arrival and owner was prompt to reply! We would not hesitate to return!

Great Lake view, right on the water

  • 5 of 5

This cottage is exactly what we were looking for. Relaxing, great view right on the water, near a state park, and not too far of a drive from metro detroit. We have never stayed on Gun lake, it is a large, beautiful lake that exceeded our expectations. The owner was very accommodating,we would highly recommend staying here.

By far, the nicest cottage we have ever stayed in for vacation!

  • 5 of 5

We were very impressed with how well the cottage was supplied w/everything we needed, from cooking, to sleeping, cleaning (great having a dishwasher!). The view of the lake from the patio doors was incredible! Made you just want to stay outside more! Loved the kayaks: I think we all tried them out. Eating our meals by the windows with views of the lake was great. Plenty of sleeping space for

us all to sleep well. The fishing could have been better but at least we could all fish from the dock, especially Frankie, our 4 yr. old nephew who caught the very first fish! We enjoyed having a bonfire our last night, especially seeing sooooooo many stars in the clear sky. We came home with many great memories to share for years to come.

Nice cottage and great location

  • 5 of 5

We rented this cottage for 6 weeks while our nearby home was being remodeled. Me, wife, daughter, and dog.

Nice roomy two bedroom cottage 50 feet within the water's edge. Amazing views. Sandy bottom lake with gradual drop-off is great for swimming and other water sports. Neighbors on both sides are very nice, polite, quiet, and respectful.

Lots to do in the immediate area. Deep lake mountain bike trail is awesome and only 5 minutes away. Great hiking trails too.

Barry is a good landlord. He will do his best to accommodate any needs and is very responsive.

This cottage rental is a very good value.
