It's an old house built in 1920's with hard wood floors up stairs. The floors squeak just a bit and we are conscious of your stay.
The back yard invites you to sit at a swinging bench in the upper flower garden. Continue past the upper fence and old firs to a big cherry tree, rabbit hutches, and chicken coop situated below the tree house and mini 'wee' (as our daughter calls it, aka slide) Kids are welcome. Roam further to discover a vegetable garden with it's own rock patio and chairs for relaxing in the sun.
Venture off the farm to visit one of our favorite places to eat, Bar Carlo, with its rotating local art décor and great food. Piper Café across the street serves wonderful lattes. Down the street and north of the house, find Essex Park, whose water structure bustles with kids of all ages during warm summer months. There's also a playground, basketball and tennis courts. Beckoning a little further up the street, our local library branch offers public-use computers and USB/printer plug in. Welcome to the neighborhood. We know you'll fit right in!
We have a fun and informative page on that book with many faces place. Just type in Little hen & HARE, if you are looking to see what is going on in and around Portland, looking for a good place to eat (check out our likes) or wondering what's new on the home front.
Own entrance, kitchen and bathroom. On street parking. Laundry facilities. Beautiful back yard. Free Wifi. Helpful hosts! Lots of local recommendations.
Interaction with Guests
We interact with our guest as much as they feel comfortable with. We have been living with people for the past 15 years and are quite respectful to others space and energy levels. Though we do often like to say Hello if we hear you. We live full time up stairs.
Foster/Powell neighborhood is starting to get it's self on the map. With a few really good restaurants, a couple of coffee shops and now a great bottle shop (N.W. IPA) with beer on tap; just bring your mason jar. Groceries within 15 min walk. There is a park down the street and busses all around for inexpensive transportation. We live in a safe sport and know most all our neighbors.
There are 4 busses easily accessible, one of them will take you right to Hawthorne. The MAX is our light rail; there is a stop on 92nd street that can take you down to Clackamas Town Center and (with a transfer) will take you to the airport.
Other Things to Note
We have a(website hidden)page; Little hen & HARE. With updates on the fun things to do in Portland, great eats and parks. I also share what's new around the property. A fun place to keep connected and support us by Linking our page. Thanks!
Hello, we are your hosts, Amber Jane and Justin. Amber Jane help people bring essential oils into their homes to up level their physical and emotional health. Amber Jane is certified in the Aromatouch Technique. Ask to schedule a FREE session. (Did you see our free bottle of Wild Orange or Free Night stay above?). There are weekly classes if you are curious.
My husband Justin is an old-school sign guy who does hand lettering, gilding, carved signs, and wall jobs. Ever heard of a 'Wall Dog', well come meet one. His business, Riede Signs, is in the shop out back. We have a daughter born at home, early in the morning in July 2011. So you may hear pitter patter up above.
We both believe that life should be filled with fun, good food, art and a bit of adventure. We find pleasure in our community, family and friend's as well as homesteading when we have time. For right now we are building a finical pipeline with the joy of essential oils. Fueled by a love of creating arts and crafts, we also enjoy improving our property. We have been residents in PDX since 1996. We have watched in wonder as our city has grown and blossomed into a dynamic destination filled with hidden treasures, always offering new and unique surprises to discover.
Little hen & HARE, is an urban micro-farm just five miles from downtown Portland. On the quarter acre property we tend an organic garden and small fruit orchard which stretches to meet the edge of a chicken run where 5 chickens cluck about. They also raise New Zealand Red rabbits, all while chasing after their pre-schooler and running two successful businesses. We know you'll enjoy your stay!
Amber Jane Arquette purchased this apartment in 2000
We live in a unique place. The double lot allows us to have a lot of nature and animals right in town. Big redwoods and quiet back yard spaces. Enjoy the yard, visit the ever growing Foster and Portland Marcado. We are close to the airport and lots of parks.
What a sweet little spot to crash! We only stayed two nights, but could have easily stayed much longer with the amenities provided. FULL kitchen, comfy bed, and wonderful essential oils as a luxurious touch. The bathroom is huge and pristine! Our very favorite part, though, was strolling the garden and saying hi to the chickens and bunnies. Such a special place, and truly "Oregon." Thank you Hen and Hare!
We were so pleased when we arrived at the Little Hen and Hare. It was very clean and well appointed. We liked the mid-century decor. Our 5 year old grandson stayed with us and enjoyed seeing the chickens and rabbits. It is steps away from the # 17 bus stop to OMSI, downtown and walking distance to Bar Carlo and Torta Landia two of our favorite restaurants. We hope to return to Portland soon and hope that it will be available again.
We had a great time. The hosts are wonderful and went out of their way to make sure we had all the resources we needed to experience Portland. We stayed during a heat wave, and Justin and Amber wrote down a list of creeks and rivers to cool down in. The apartment is in the basement, so it stayed very cool even when the rest of Portland was 95 degrees! It is just two blocks from a nice park with a splash pad. The neighborhood is cute. Our children loved the garden, sandbox, bunnies and hens. We would definitely stay here again.
We enjoyed our stay at this very comfortable, cozy downstairs apartment. For our needs, the location was convenient; the hosts were friendly, helpful and accommodating. The unit was very clean with adequate storage space and many nice amenities. Particularly appreciated were the many books, current menus, and other Portland information available in the unit. We especially loved the 50's feel of the spacious kitchen with the great coffee mugs and oatmeal bar. The outside areas were a nice treat for our little grandson, who loved seeing the bunnies and chickens!
Excellent! We had a Great stay in Portland Thanks to our hosts. The downstairs apartment was beautifully decorated and very comfortable. Our hosts were Sweet, Kind and a loving family they made us feel welcome and at home. It is easy to get to & quick access to anywhere you'd want to go. I hope to stay here again on our next trip to Portland.
There is a park down the street with basket ball courts and tennis. The Library is up the street a block and we are close to Mt. Tabor Park and hiking area. Mt. Scott is a community center where you can work out, swim and play basket ball in doors. Located about 1 mile away.
