About the property

A vintage styled apartment on the basement level of our 1929 bungalow.

We have lived in this house for over 16 years and loved it up! The downstairs apartment has been remodeled in a classy vintage style. You have a separate entrance, large living space, kitchen and big bathroom. Portland style. Big yard, chickens clucking and rabbit hatches. Located right off the 205, 15 mins from Hawthorne.

Are you open to natural solutions for your health? And a free bottle of essential oil or a free night stay?!? What do you know about essential oils? Get your free bottle of Wild Orange by scheduling a 30 educational class while you are here! If you decide doTERRA essential oils are for you, we have a special and will refund one of your nights stay! These oils have really changed our health and others should know that there is an in home natural approach!

The Space

Experience vintage charm on an urban farm. At Little hen & HARE you'll taste the sweetness of grandma's kitchen and feel the luxury of finely crafted things while you get the local's low-down on hidden gems to discover in and around Portland, Oregon. Nestled among the trees, vegetable garden, rabbit and chickens, we are conveniently located just off I-205, across the river from downtown Portland, in the SE Foster/ Powell neighborhood. We are a fifteen-minute walk from Foster Street which is redefining itself with hip new shops, restaurants and the newly refurbished Grand Theater.

We welcome you to come stay! We live upstairs full time with our sweet daughter (who likes to run and dance, pit-a-pat, pit-a-pat). We hope you will come to enjoy time to yourself, respected privacy as well as friendly community.

The unit features:

*Queen bed

*Twin sized sleeper couch

*Extra foam or air mattress apon request

*Separate entrance

*Fully-equipped kitchen

*Full bathroom with shower

*TV w/Netflix and DVD player

*Large yard with an upper flower garden and swinging bench

*Tea, Coffee and an fancy oatmeal bar for the mornings.

*Family friendly, big yard, with tree house.

*5 miles from down town

Enter via a separate back door and walk downstairs to the apartment. The door opens to a beautifully remodeled, colorful, bright and open space with plush new carpet, queen bed and a velvet couch that opens to a twin-sized sleeper. The butter yellow kitchen seats four at its oval retro dining table, and features vintage stove and fridge along with all the pots, pans and plates and to take you back to another era. The elegantly simple wood and white-tiled bathroom is clean and bright.

It's an old house built in 1920's with hard wood floors up stairs. The floors squeak just a bit and we are conscious of your stay.

The back yard invites you to sit at a swinging bench in the upper flower garden. Continue past the upper fence and old firs to a big cherry tree, rabbit hutches, and chicken coop situated below the tree house and mini 'wee' (as our daughter calls it, aka slide) Kids are welcome. Roam further to discover a vegetable garden with it's own rock patio and chairs for relaxing in the sun.

Venture off the farm to visit one of our favorite places to eat, Bar Carlo, with its rotating local art décor and great food. Piper Café across the street serves wonderful lattes. Down the street and north of the house, find Essex Park, whose water structure bustles with kids of all ages during warm summer months. There's also a playground, basketball and tennis courts. Beckoning a little further up the street, our local library branch offers public-use computers and USB/printer plug in. Welcome to the neighborhood. We know you'll fit right in!

We have a fun and informative page on that book with many faces place. Just type in Little hen & HARE, if you are looking to see what is going on in and around Portland, looking for a good place to eat (check out our likes) or wondering what's new on the home front.

Guest Access

Own entrance, kitchen and bathroom. On street parking. Laundry facilities. Beautiful back yard. Free Wifi. Helpful hosts! Lots of local recommendations.

Interaction with Guests

We interact with our guest as much as they feel comfortable with. We have been living with people for the past 15 years and are quite respectful to others space and energy levels. Though we do often like to say Hello if we hear you. We live full time up stairs.

The Neighborhood

Foster/Powell neighborhood is starting to get it's self on the map. With a few really good restaurants, a couple of coffee shops and now a great bottle shop (N.W. IPA) with beer on tap; just bring your mason jar. Groceries within 15 min walk. There is a park down the street and busses all around for inexpensive transportation. We live in a safe sport and know most all our neighbors.

Getting around

There are 4 busses easily accessible, one of them will take you right to Hawthorne. The MAX is our light rail; there is a stop on 92nd street that can take you down to Clackamas Town Center and (with a transfer) will take you to the airport.

Other Things to Note

We have a(website hidden)page; Little hen & HARE. With updates on the fun things to do in Portland, great eats and parks. I also share what's new around the property. A fun place to keep connected and support us by Linking our page. Thanks!

About Amber Jane Arquette

Hello, we are your hosts, Amber Jane and Justin. Amber Jane help people bring essential oils into their homes to up level their physical and emotional health. Amber Jane is certified in the Aromatouch Technique. Ask to schedule a FREE session. (Did you see our free bottle of Wild Orange or Free Night stay above?). There are weekly classes if you are curious.

My husband Justin is an old-school sign guy who does hand lettering, gilding, carved signs, and wall jobs. Ever heard of a 'Wall Dog', well come meet one. His business, Riede Signs, is in the shop out back. We have a daughter born at home, early in the morning in July 2011. So you may hear pitter patter up above.

We both believe that life should be filled with fun, good food, art and a bit of adventure. We find pleasure in our community, family and friend's as well as homesteading when we have time. For right now we are building a finical pipeline with the joy of essential oils. Fueled by a love of creating arts and crafts, we also enjoy improving our property. We have been residents in PDX since 1996. We have watched in wonder as our city has grown and blossomed into a dynamic destination filled with hidden treasures, always offering new and unique surprises to discover.

Little hen & HARE, is an urban micro-farm just five miles from downtown Portland. On the quarter acre property we tend an organic garden and small fruit orchard which stretches to meet the edge of a chicken run where 5 chickens cluck about. They also raise New Zealand Red rabbits, all while chasing after their pre-schooler and running two successful businesses. We know you'll enjoy your stay!

Sweet, sweet abode!

  • 5 of 5

We had a fantastic stay here. Amber Jane and Keith were wonderful hosts. Loved the fresh coffee beans and French press, and while we don't whiten our coffee, they had 1/2 & 1/2 there for us, just in case. Heartily recommend this sweet dwelling!

Cute Place

  • 5 of 5

Everything as advertised, well maintained, retro Portland look. Hosts, who live on the main level, were kind. Property is a quiet, fun place for our young Portland grancdhilren to visit--hens, hares, tree house, hammockk, toys The spacious basement apartment was cool enough even though Portland was pretty warm--note to summer visitors, be sure to close windows during the day to keep the warm air out.

Great place to stay in Portland

  • 5 of 5

The apartment was clean, bright and on a quiet residential street. The hosts were accommodating of our late arrival and privacy. The kitchen is fully stocked of equipment and there is coffee and oatmeal to prepare. We will stay again should the opportunity arise. There is a sense of whimsy and an artistic flair about the property. If you go, look for the hidden treasures in the window wells and garden.

Private, quiet, beautiful!

  • 5 of 5

A perfect place for a single person or small family. Host has created a vintage haven that was extremely clean, superbly decorated with a fully equipped kitchen for those who enjoy preparing home cooked meals. Queen size, wraught iron bed super comfortable. Access to a serenity garden for contemplation with charming chickens and rabbits a few steps further out in the spacious back yard. Amber Jane and her family are kind and thoughtful hosts. Close to everything from coffee shops to movie theaters! May this place continue to be a successful offering in this friendly, safe neighborhood in SE Portland. Thank you!
