Uvita is only minutes by car and offers a wide array of services including super markets, banks, a health clinic, dentist, pharmacy, veterinarian, and much more. There are several good restaurants in our area, and Ojochal, the next town south, has several excellent restaurants receiving high reviews. If you are a golfer, the San Buenas 18 holes golf course is only 25 minutes away.

Madreselva is a 'green home' - we are proud that we rely on solar energy for power and hot water. The home was built to the highest ecological standards and best practices in tropical architecture. The roof is made from recycled plastic, the pool tiles are recycled glass, and the wood throughout the house comes from local wood, certified as being sustainably harvested. Even the dining room table was crafted from a hardwood tree that fell on the property decades ago.

Madreselva gets 5 stars just for the WOW factor of the incredible setting! Be advised that this spectacular home is a long way from your closest human neighbor, but if you like privacy, enjoy nature and don't mind being 15 minutes from the beach you will be totally thrilled staying here! Arriving at night made finding it more challenging but waking up the next morning to the view we had not seen before was a feast for the eyes and senses! This place is a real inspiration for upscale, off the grid living and has set the bar very high for this nature lover. From the exotic flowers to the sounds of nature to the ever-enchanting views, we fell in love with Madreselva and will be back for sure! Many thanks to Claudia and Rosibel!

Perfect for our large group. Memorable New Year celebrations!

  • 5 of 5

The house is wonderful and the view is to die for. I was worried about the lack of air conditionning but it was actually quite cool in the evening. The kitchen is well equipped, very large and we easily cooked all of our diners there (we were 13 people so lots of helpers!). The road leading up to the house is easily manageable but i also recommend getting there during daylight on your first night. 4x4 is indeed a must (we had one Daihatsu which had definitely had more trouble getting up than our other car, a Grand Vitarra). Bring a sleep mask if you are one to sleep in as the sunrise is early and there are no blackout curtains in the windows. We preferred getting up and enjoying the sunrise and the sounds of the birds and other animals with a good coffee in hand.

Rosibel and Claudia were friendly and helpful and made our stay memorable. Claudia's guide is full of information on what to do around the area.

Not too miss: the waterfall and swim hole up the hill. We got there around 14h when the sun was directly in the hole rendering the whole experience almost magical.

Beaches not to miss: Uvita and Arco.

Our group liked the horseriding on the beach at Rancho Merced and enjoyed the zipline at Osa Tours.

Spectacular Views, House and Outdoor Experience

  • 5 of 5

This home is nestled on a ridge overlooking the Ballena - or Whale's Tail, a sandspit in the shape of a whale tail. The view is breathtaking and you are surrounded by a natural rain forest full of wonderful birds, howler monkeys, coatis and peccaries. In the mornings and evenings, toucans fly across the valley and all day long the hummingbirds flit in shrubs planted with them in mind. It was hard for me to leave the palapa built for birdwatching. 4 Wheel Drive was a must & plan to arrive before dark for safer driving.

The house is spacious, beautifully and comfortably furnished and just as the pictures show it. With the two masters on opposite sides of the home, there was plenty of privacy for two couples and both rooms have the ocean view and direct access onto the pool terrace. The pool is lovely and has a unique outdoor shower. The two other bedrooms, while not having the view, are both comfortable and great for children and teens. The bathrooms all have beautiful tiles and showers. Kitchen has everything you need.

One of the best features is the staff: Rosibel and her brother Jenan. Rosibel comes every day and cooks breakfast to your taste - but I suggest letting her pick the menus, she has a great repertoire. She also tidies the house and can cook dinners or do laundry by prior arrangement. Jenan tends the grounds and is a talented birdwatching guide. He knows all the birds by sight and sound and is happy to take you on a guided tour again by appointment. He showed me many beautiful birds. Enjoy their lovely Tican hospitality.

There are many options for outings. Nearby, the Nunez family offer a 3 waterfall hike with a terrific lunch and dip in a natural pool- allow a half day and expect some steep walking. The Nunez brothers are also talented nature guides. On our hike we saw a sloth, several snakes and some colorful frogs. You can also zipline, go on a snorkel trip, ride horses. The owner/Rosibel can help with arrangements.

The whole coast is a beach. Within 15 - 25 minutes drive, are Playa Ventanas (small crescent bay with accessible cave at low tide), Playa Uvita, the Ballena National Park, Playa Hermosa - a beautiful long beach with nice ceviche stands and Playa Dominicalito. At the north end of Dominicalito is a fun restaurant Por Que No. Park just past it and watch the sunset (bring your beach chairs) and then move up to the restaurant for dinner. Note: there often white-headed capuchin monkeys in palms by the beaches.

A Tropical Paradise

  • 5 of 5

This home and property far exceeded our expectations! The design is spectacular and for a home off the grid so impressive.

The furnishings are in such good taste yet inviting and so comfortable. The property is exquisite both in the landscaping and being immersed

in the jungle of the rain forest. The view is amazingly captivating, surrounded by dense foliage , mountains and the ocean.

The home was fully equipped with all one could want for, spacious enough to have privacy when one chose to get away .

The jungle comes alive around 5:30 AM with the howler monkeys and birds. The view of the sunrise gets one up and ready for another

day of adventure or leisure . The early evening brings the jungle alive once again with monkeys, birds, tree frogs and other animal calls.

Sitting out by the pool or on the palapa ( open thatched roof gazebo) the family of toucans and white hawks were constant visitors.

Rosibel and her family are delightful. We are a family who like to cook and didn't think we would want others in the kitchen but we soon changed our minds . Her native breakfasts were fabulous and we had her cook a few dinners which far surpassed eating out. Her dinner in a palm leaf is

a must! It was wonderful having the company and they were beyond helpful creating our itinerary of tours and making all the arrangements.

The Nuanez brothers waterfall tour was great fun. They are so familiar with the property and the hike to three different falls even though a bit challenging for the older folk was well worth it. They helped the girls climb the falls and were so careful to watch us all and make sure we were safe. The homemade lunch after was another superb native meal.

We went to the "whales tail" and saw a family of macaws which was so exciting and the Wildlife Sanctuary introduced us to many of the native animals with the howlers and toucans visiting those animals in rehabilitation.

The town and beach of Dominical allowed the girls some shopping with many vendors lining the beach .

There are many beaches to choose from all wide ,long and perfect for walking. Hermosa Beach definitely has the best shade available

which even those sun worshippers will need.

After getting out early we all wanted to return and enjoy the house and pool and look for more creatures. The insects are truly unique but

not at all bothersome. Each day was a new adventure and we all certainly look forward to returning.

Thank you so much for sharing your beautiful home with us!

A perfect vacation!

  • 5 of 5

This home is amazing - - a perfect place for a family to join together for a vacation. When we arrived to Madreselva, we literally got out of our cars and cheered because the views and the home were so stunning. Each of the four bedrooms has its own bathroom and the living space is large enough for everyone. Every morning, the adults began the day by sitting on the palapa to watch the sunrise and listen to the howler monkeys and birds. Soon after they're finished, Rosibel came every morning to cook a delicious breakfast and care for the home. She also offered to make reservations and suggest outings.

The drive IS a bit intimidating at first, but after a few tries, it was (dare I say?) fun! The directions in Claudia's welcome letter are spot on. Get a 4x4, follow the directions, and enjoy the views. (FYI, our auto insurance AND credit card both assured us that, if needed, they would cover rental insurance.)

There are two grocery stores nearby (BM). They were great; we had no problems buying groceries to make our own dinners each night.

We also went on a few excursions. The Nunez brothers (Enrique and Umberto) took us on a great hike to three waterfalls. They were enthusiastic and knowledgeable about the land an animals. They also made sure that my kids (7 and 9) were totally safe. We enjoyed swimming at the end and eating a delicious lunch. We also took an ATV tour to Uvita Falls. It was fun, but fair warning! - - the ATVs are harder to drive than the side-by-sides. Also, you WILL get dirty. However, the ride is beautiful and you should slide down the waterfall at the end. My 9 year-old did it and loved it! We had surf lessons with Adrianna and Gibron with Bodhi Surf. Adrianna was great with my kids and they were both confidently standing up by the end of their 2 hour session. The adults? Well, we had some success to a lesser degree! So fun!! We took a trip to Cano Island. Unfortunately, we got a rare day when the water was really cloudy. I hear that this almost never happens, but it did. However, our guide was really honest with us, and gave us the option of going right back to Uvita for a partial refund or continue to Violines Island. We opted to continue, and they gave us a great tour. We were bummed that the snorkling didn't work out, but enjoyed our trip anyhow. We spent an afternoon in Dominical; it was a great place to pick up souvenirs and watch surfers. We also spend a few hours at the Alturas Wildlife Sanctuary.
