About the property

4 Bedroom, 4 Bath Eco-Friendly Home With 2 Master Suites

Located in the mountains above Uvita, Costa Rica, an area known for its wildlife, pristine beaches, and friendly locals, lies “Refugio Madreselva”. This eco-home is a spacious four bedroom, four bath retreat that enjoys complete privacy surrounded by rain-forest and expansive views of the Pacific coast, including the Marino Ballena National Park, and its icon, the Whale’s Tail. The stunning views and vistas are sure to take your breath away. Madreselva is more than a home - it a wildlife refuge, encompassing 25 acres of forest and 2 creeks, and nested inside the Oro Verde Private Reserve. Madreselva is ideal for the nature lover, birdwatcher, photographer, and anyone looking for peace and relaxation.

Inside Madreselva, you will notice that we have an eye for detail. The house was designed to be at one with nature yet offer all the conveniences and charm our guests may desire. The open floor plan takes advantage of the ocean breezes, big views and incredible sunrise over the mountains. The gourmet kitchen is spacious, enjoys high-end appliances, and granite counter tops. There is a TV room with a large flat-screen, cable, and DVD player. The 4 bedrooms have high quality, comfortable mattresses that will leave you refreshed and ready for days of adventures. Gather your group together for a meal at the large twelve person table that overlooks the beautiful (heated) pool, valley, and ocean.

Outside Madreselva, you are surrounded by the wonders of nature. Sit by the pool and watch the clouds roll by, waves crash onto the Whale’s Tail, monkeys play in the treetops and birds fly below. The thatch roofed palapa (called 'rancho' in Costa Rica) hangs over the valley offering seamless views, and is a perfect place to enjoy your morning coffee or a sunset cook-out on the BBQ grill. The outdoor spaces are complete with hammocks and comfortable furniture perfect for napping or reading that book you have been dying to finish.

Madreselva is the perfect home-base from which to launch a number of exciting excursions. You can choose among a dozen beaches, surfing, whale and dolphin watching, horse riding, birdwatching, water rafting, kayaking, zip lining, fishing, and day as well as night-guided nature tours. Near us you can hike to 3 magnificent waterfalls through primary forest, as well as swim and play in the local river. You can also, take advantage of our trails for hiking, bird watching, or taking photographs of our diverse wildlife.

Our staff is ready to pamper you and make your vacation unforgettable. Rosibel, our housekeeper, is available from 7am - 1pm (Monday - Friday) to cook you a delightful breakfast made from local ingredients. She will also do a light cleaning that includes tidying up, making beds, and doing one load of laundry per day for your group. All this is included in the price. If you would like additional services, such as extra laundry, shopping, cooking other meals or child care, please let us know. We are happy to help.

Uvita is only minutes by car and offers a wide array of services including super markets, banks, a health clinic, dentist, pharmacy, veterinarian, and much more. There are several good restaurants in our area, and Ojochal, the next town south, has several excellent restaurants receiving high reviews. If you are a golfer, the San Buenas 18 holes golf course is only 25 minutes away.

Madreselva is a 'green home' - we are proud that we rely on solar energy for power and hot water. The home was built to the highest ecological standards and best practices in tropical architecture. The roof is made from recycled plastic, the pool tiles are recycled glass, and the wood throughout the house comes from local wood, certified as being sustainably harvested. Even the dining room table was crafted from a hardwood tree that fell on the property decades ago.

We hope you will choose Madreselva for your next vacation, family get-together or yoga/meditation retreat. The balmy breezes, private setting, and lush jungle surroundings will leave you relaxed, refreshed and looking forward to your next visit to our beautiful country.

Important: Our private gravel road (1 mile), while in excellent condition, is steep and thus you will need a 4x4 car to access our property.

My family of four met my husband's family of nine for a long overdue family reunion. Coming from our small 800 square foot condo back home to the Madreselva 5000 square foot luxury vacation paradise was an unforgettable experience. It was the best of both worlds. If you wanted privacy there was ample space to get away AND we had great times together gathered inside the house and poolside. The cousins stayed up late playing cards and board games. Priceless family time. Make sure to dedicate one night to grill out on the rancho. Simply the BEST! As we drove up the hill to the Madreselva home and passed through the private security gate one of my son's made the comment, "WOW! This is beautiful! It's like Jurassic Park without the scary dinosaurs!" The views are breathtaking!

When we arrived Rosibel was there to welcome us and to give a tour of this spectacular home. Her daily breakfast was always delicious and she took great care of us during our stay. She was very helpful with recommendations on daily excursions and restaurants. Her brother Yanan made sure the grounds were kept impeccably and the pool was always immaculate!

A must see while in Uvita is the Santa Lucia Falls. The day trip was amazing and the team that took us out treated us like family. The falls were magnificent and we ended with a homecooked meal. The best fried chicken I have ever had in my life served with rice, yuca, fresh pineapple and freshly squeezed mango juice.

A special Thank You to Claudia. She made sure we reserved reliable transportation from the airport to her home as well as a necessary 4X4 vehicle. The amenities were endless and couldn't have asked for more. The location and views were a dream come true. The wildlife was stunning. The welcome packet was exceptionally helpful and she truly made sure our stay was perfect. I would definitely 100% recommend this property, it truly was a vacation of a lifetime!

Gorgeous, peaceful, paradise!!

  • 5 of 5

We could not have asked for a more perfect location and setting. Refugio Madreselva is absolutely gorgeous as it nestled within primary forest with a beautiful unobstructed view of the ocean just a few miles away. We had a wonderful and relaxing time. Rosibel not only made delicious breakfast each morning, she was enormously helpful in planning and arranging a very wide range activities, including some off the beaten path such an artisan cocoa tour and ecological coffee bean tour. The kitchen is very well appointed and all of the amenities are first rate. We were there with another family - 10 of us altogether. We had plenty of space and cannot wait to return.

Absolute Paradise

  • 5 of 5

This place is absolutely perfect. My fiancé and I both felt rejuvenated and whole again after our week stay here. Endless beautiful views of wildlife, lush jungles, close to many amazing beaches including Playa Ventanas & Bahia Ballena. Great tours and activity options! Conveniently near Dominical, a wonderful town to enjoy restaurants and shops of different varieties as well as the beach there. Super clean property and professional staff. Coordinating on behalf of Claudia was impeccable. I continue to recommend this home away from home to everybody I meet!

Breathtaking Jungle Mountain top Home!

  • 5 of 5

Nothing can prepare you for the experience of Madreselva! Not even the perfect 16 page welcome letter that Claudia provides for you prior to your arrival. Print that off, pack it up, and get ready for an adventure of a lifetime. My children are beginning to think that I am a professional at finding VRBO properties. If you do not enjoy exhilarating mountain drives, nature lulling you to sleep through your screens, and waking you in the morning, sitting in the cloud forest watching an ever changing cloud show, never turning on a television, miles of breathtaking views, hospitality of Helen and her delicious breakfasts, Rosibel and her beautiful personality, Yanan and his sweet demeanor, beautiful flowers everywhere you look, waterfalls, fishing, beaches, surf, adventures, awesome food, fresh fruit,...don't go here! Seriously, the photos and my words cannot do justice to this special gem. We picked the perfect part of Costa Rica to explore and Madreselva was the perfect home to be our base. Claudia was so helpful and easy to deal with from the beginning of booking. Her recommendations are perfect and spot on. We traveled with our four children (ages 22, 19, 15, 15) plus an extra 19 year old. The house was spacious and comfortable with beds for all! We were surprised at how cool the summer evenings were and I'm glad that I had thrown in a light sweatshirt at the last minute! There's no AC in the house and we didn't miss it at all. I think we all had the best nights sleep! Our high adventure days brought early to bed evenings. If you are thinking of renting this home...just do won't regret it! We hope to return very soon!
