Madreselva is ideal for the nature lover, birdwatcher, photographer, and anyone looking for peace and relaxation.
Inside Madreselva, you will notice that we have an eye for detail. The house was designed to be at one with nature yet offer all the conveniences and charm our guests may desire. The outdoor spaces are complete with hammocks and comfortable furniture perfect for napping or reading that book you have been dying to finish.
Madreselva is the perfect home-base from which to launch a number of exciting excursions. You can choose among a dozen beaches, surfing, whale and dolphin watching, horse riding, birdwatching, water rafting, kayaking, zip lining, fishing, and day as well as night-guided nature tours. Near us you can hike to 3 magnificent waterfalls through primary forest, as well as swim and play in the local river. Our staff is ready to pamper you and make your vacation unforgettable. Rosibel, our housekeeper, is available from 7am - 1pm (Monday - Friday) to cook you a delightful breakfast made from local ingredients. She will also do a light cleaning that includes tidying up, making beds, and doing one load of laundry per day for your group. All this is included in the price. If you would like additional services, such as extra laundry, shopping, cooking other meals or child care, please let us know. We are happy to help.
Uvita is only minutes by car and offers a wide array of services including super markets, banks, a health clinic, dentist, pharmacy, veterinarian, and much more. There are several good restaurants in our area, and Ojochal, the next town south, has several excellent restaurants receiving high reviews. If you are a golfer, the San Buenas 18 holes golf course is only 25 minutes away.
Madreselva is a 'green home' - we are proud that we rely on solar energy for power and hot water. The home was built to the highest ecological standards and best practices in tropical architecture. The roof is made from recycled plastic, the pool tiles are recycled glass, and the wood throughout the house comes from local wood, certified as being sustainably harvested. Even the dining room table was crafted from a hardwood tree that fell on the property decades ago.
We hope you will choose Madreselva for your next vacation, family get-together or yoga/meditation retreat. The balmy breezes, private setting, and lush jungle surroundings will leave you relaxed, refreshed and looking forward to your next visit to our beautiful country.

About Claudia Alderman
The owners, Claudia and Harold Alderman spent their honeymoon almost 33 years ago in Costa Rica. While there, they fell in love with this beautiful country and fantasized about someday retiring in Costa Rica.In 2014 their dream came true with the purchase of 25 acres in the Oro Verde Reserve. With Harold's enthusiastic support, Claudia spent the entire year creating Madreselva as an eco-home and wildlife refuge. Claudia is an environment specialist, who devoted her career to promoting biodiversity conservation and the improved management and financing of protected areas in Latin America. She has a Master's Degree from the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental studies. Her thesis focused on the economic and ecologic benefits of private protected areas. When torn away from Costa Rica she is based in Washington DC.

Magical place and an extraordinary journey.
If you think the pictures and review of the property is amazing, wait until you arrive! We have rented secluded, private homes in the past and Madreselva tops them all!
The view is magnificent, waking up early and having a coffee next to the hummingbirds was my absolute favourite ritual. The weather was 30 degrees but it was never too hot in the home, perfect climate.
We were a group of 12 (8 of which were kids ages 6-16) and we all had a ton of space and peace and quiet. The layout of the property was well designed as bedrooms are on either side of the main house so things were always nice and quiet for a peaceful sleep.
Most homes we have rented have quite a small pool but we were delightful surprised by the size of the pool and we all had plenty of space to swim and relax.
Rosibel was lovely and very helpful. She made us breakfast and dinner which were all delicious.
Claudia had a major role in making this trip delightful...from the attached handout with all the activities, help with rental cars and local attractions...she was amazing and made the trip go smoothly.
The private road up to the house was much steeper than anticipated and we were glad Claudia warned us of this, but what do you expect when your nestled away in paradise on a mountain! lol
Absolutely, recommend the tour to falls with the Nunez brothers. Food after the hike and tour was amazing and soooo fresh! Waterfalls were all breathtaking and it was an excellent day to get some exercise in! Wow it was quite a hike!
Overall, it was definitely a memorable, surreal place to stay and our family would highly recommend visiting this breathtaking property.
Perfect for our large group. Memorable New Year celebrations!
The house is wonderful and the view is to die for. I was worried about the lack of air conditionning but it was actually quite cool in the evening. The kitchen is well equipped, very large and we easily cooked all of our diners there (we were 13 people so lots of helpers!). The road leading up to the house is easily manageable but i also recommend getting there during daylight on your first night. 4x4 is indeed a must (we had one Daihatsu which had definitely had more trouble getting up than our other car, a Grand Vitarra). Bring a sleep mask if you are one to sleep in as the sunrise is early and there are no blackout curtains in the windows. We preferred getting up and enjoying the sunrise and the sounds of the birds and other animals with a good coffee in hand.
Rosibel and Claudia were friendly and helpful and made our stay memorable. Claudia's guide is full of information on what to do around the area.
Not too miss: the waterfall and swim hole up the hill. We got there around 14h when the sun was directly in the hole rendering the whole experience almost magical.
Beaches not to miss: Uvita and Arco.
Our group liked the horseriding on the beach at Rancho Merced and enjoyed the zipline at Osa Tours.
Dear Lisa, Thank you so much for your kind and informative review. I am delighted that you and your group had a wonderful time, and we look forward to hosting you again. Best wishes for you for 2018. Claudia Alderman
VACATION OF A LIFETIME!
My family of four met my husband's family of nine for a long overdue family reunion. Coming from our small 800 square foot condo back home to the Madreselva 5000 square foot luxury vacation paradise was an unforgettable experience. It was the best of both worlds. If you wanted privacy there was ample space to get away AND we had great times together gathered inside the house and poolside. The cousins stayed up late playing cards and board games. Priceless family time. Make sure to dedicate one night to grill out on the rancho. Simply the BEST! As we drove up the hill to the Madreselva home and passed through the private security gate one of my son's made the comment, "WOW! This is beautiful! It's like Jurassic Park without the scary dinosaurs!" The views are breathtaking!
When we arrived Rosibel was there to welcome us and to give a tour of this spectacular home. Her daily breakfast was always delicious and she took great care of us during our stay. She was very helpful with recommendations on daily excursions and restaurants. Her brother Yanan made sure the grounds were kept impeccably and the pool was always immaculate!
A must see while in Uvita is the Santa Lucia Falls. The day trip was amazing and the team that took us out treated us like family. The falls were magnificent and we ended with a homecooked meal. The best fried chicken I have ever had in my life served with rice, yuca, fresh pineapple and freshly squeezed mango juice.
A special Thank You to Claudia. She made sure we reserved reliable transportation from the airport to her home as well as a necessary 4X4 vehicle. The amenities were endless and couldn't have asked for more. The location and views were a dream come true. The wildlife was stunning. The welcome packet was exceptionally helpful and she truly made sure our stay was perfect. I would definitely 100% recommend this property, it truly was a vacation of a lifetime!
Spectacular mountain retreat!
We had an ideal family vacation in December at Madreselva . The view was spectacular from the house, and the house itself was tastefully decorated and spacious with lots of options for togetherness and privacy both indoors and outdoors. ( We were a family of 5 adults). Rosi the housekeeper was superb at preparing our breakfast, daily housekeeping and providing us with local contacts and arrangements for activities. Claudia's guide to the house and the area is very thorough and informative , and both Claudia and Rosi were very responsive to any questions or help needed. Would definitely recommend for a stay and would love to return!
Dear Lisa, Thank you so much for taking the time to write this review. I am delighted you had a nice vacation, and hope you will return soon. Claudia.
Madreselva gets 5 stars just for the WOW factor of the incredible setting! Be advised that this spectacular home is a long way from your closest human neighbor, but if you like privacy, enjoy nature and don't mind being 15 minutes from the beach you will be totally thrilled staying here! Arriving at night made finding it more challenging but waking up the next morning to the view we had not seen before was a feast for the eyes and senses! This place is a real inspiration for upscale, off the grid living and has set the bar very high for this nature lover. From the exotic flowers to the sounds of nature to the ever-enchanting views, we fell in love with Madreselva and will be back for sure! Many thanks to Claudia and Rosibel!
Dear Bill, Thank you so much for your kind review. I am delighted you had such a nice experience, and look forward to your staying with us again. Warm regards, Claudia.
