Cedar Branch Hollow Cottage

  • 4 of 5

We rented Cedar Branch Hollow to stay in while attending our son's graduation from VMI. As expected, the cottage is approximately 20 minutes from VMI. The property surrounding this secluded cottage is absolutely beautiful and the owner encourages you to explore it. If you are interested in relaxing, this cottage will suite you fine as well. The house has everything we needed to host our family. The house easily sleeps 6, but there is space for an air mattress if needed. We enjoyed talking to the owners when we arrived and could see them out on their property while we were there, but they respected our privacy during our stay. The owners were easy to work with. We wish we had found this home earlier, during our son's years at VMI (especially his RAT year!)!

We had a wonderful time at the cabin.

  • 5 of 5

My favorite part of the trip was being able to walk along the creek behind the house. It had lovely views from all Windows.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for your comments. Walking anywhere on the property is delightful though the sound of the creek has a lot of appeal. My grandkids particularly love crossing over the bridge and throwing sticks and pebbles off one side of the bridge into the water and watching it come out on the other side. I think about getting rubber ducks that each child can initial then set them lose in a race down the stream. Thinking of their laughter makes me smile as I know the kids would love it. My husband and I lived in the cabin for many years before building the other house. We enjoyed being on the porch and watching the fireflies in the evenings and the humming birds during the day. The birds would hover about a foot away at eye level as if asking us what we were doing in their domain! One time my neighbors' guinea hens walked single file up the driveway, circled the house three times and departed as they had arrived in single file. We figured they put a hex on us. Regards, The Cokers

Delightful & Charming Country Home

  • 5 of 5

We've just booked our third straight year at this gem of a home for Washington & Lee's Parents Weekend. It's beautiful three levels are clean and comfortable and provides much more room and comfort to spread out and enjoy our family time than we'd have in a hotel room in town. Linens and towels and small toiletries are provided. We love this home because it allows us to relax as a family. I make meals in advance of our trip and bring them to heat up and serve here instead of battling for reservations in town. The kitchen is lovely-- great stove, coffee maker, toaster... but lacking some cookware. So if you need something specific, bring it with you. For the past two years, it has poured on Parents Weekend, so we've taken refuge in this house, sat outside in the hot tub, in the rain, and when it cleared, under the stars. There is also a fabulous three season room on the lowest level and right outside a fire pit. There is no wifi or cable and scant cell phone reception but they do have a DVD player and lots of DVDs, so come ready to disengage from the outside world. This has been mentioned in a previous post, but the log cabin is very open - there are not doors between the bedrooms nor are there window coverings: if you need a lot of privacy between the rooms or window shades in the morning, this house isn't for you. Bathrooms are private. There are covered porches on three sides of the home and a chair swing plus a lovely table which seats six outside. We sit outside and can see and hear the lambs and cows from the neighboring pasture. It takes us a little under 20 minutes to get to W&L - it's a windy drive but for us, well worth the time. Dorothy and Tom are fabulous, generous accommodating hosts and live a bit farther up the road. I always felt if we needed anything we could just pop up and let them know.

Beautiful home with very cooperative & attentive owners. We stayed there for VMI parents weekend. 20 minute drive to VMI & W&L. Everything was very clean and plenty of room to spread out.
