Why Sandy Retzlaff chose Spruce Head

You couldn't find a sweeter cottage with a better view. Couples and families love this cabin and it's where our grand kids and their parents beg to stay.

What makes this cottage unique

Things I love about the cottage---reading on the sun porch, playing board games at the big table, watching the sunset and the moon rise off the deck.

And somehow I make the most unbelievable pies and breads in that oven.

I think it's because the previous owner-Ellen was considered the best pie maker on the Island.

Our Little Cottage on the Ocean

  • 5 of 5

We spent a week in Sandy’s beautiful little cottage 9/17. Quaint, cozy, unforgettable view, every needed amenity, minutes from the BEST lobster shack in the region, a short drive to numerous restaurant and shopping options. We appreciated Sandy’s looking out for us. ATT coverage was poor but WIFI more than compensated.

Little knotty pine Maine cottage with a big view

  • 5 of 5

This knotty pine cottage with it's magnificent water view epitomizes the Maine experience. The cottage is a bit rustic but with all the essential comforts of home. Located in mid coastal Maine, it is easily accessible to popular sites, such as Acadia National Park, Monhegan Island, and Marshall Lighthouse, and not to mention the multitude of antique stores(such as those in Warren, Maine). If traveling the first part of October, the tourist will be awarded with a fantastic leaf show.....reds, oranges, sunny yellows. After your day of sightseeing, you will return to the cottage for another breathtaking view of the water...right outside your door. Lobster fishermen anchor their boats early in the morning and return to their home at night. Our host and hostess were very gracious as well. I would highly recommend this cottage for a true "Maine experience".

A Perfect Maine Getaway!

  • 4 of 5

The recent week spent on Spruce Head Island was a perfect escape. Overlooking Seal Harbor, the view from the deck of Sandy and Cliff’s guest cottage is both tranquil and energizing. Cool breezes, inspiring sunsets, Osprey, shore birds, and the occasional clang of the nearby Maine bell, sailboats and lobstermen all helped to provide the perfect backdrop for relaxation.

The cottage is cozy and comfortable with a wood stove, good sized deck, and sleeping porch. A nearby beach made it convenient to launch our kayaks with a seemingly endless number of islands to explore. The biking and walking routes were also numerous and loaded with wild blackberries to keep us going.

A quick trip to Rockland provided great dining, shopping and gallery/museum experiences.

Cliff and Sandy were a terrific source of helpful information, local tips and hidden treasures which made the stay even more memorable. We hope to return again soon.

A beautifully constructed and finished guest cottage overlooking Seal Harbor

  • 4 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in Sandy's guest cottage. The photos on the website accurately depict what you will find. The only reason we didn't give this lovely place the 5th star is that it is what we said...a guest cottage near the main house so there is a little less privacy than a more isolated rental. That said, Sandy and her family gave us total privacy...only saying hi occasionally when we were all outside at the same time.

The kitchen is nicely equipped and the cupboards were well stocked with basic supplies. There is a nice sun porch just off the dining room that has a single bed if you have another guest with you, plus a sleeping loft up a somewhat scary ladder that was more challenging than our 70+ year old bones dared try. The interior is fully finished with pine paneling throughout.

Spruce Head is a lovely island just north of Rockland and south of Thomaston so there is a myriad of appealing restaurants nearby, including the famed Primo just outside of Rockland.

Oh, What a View!

  • 5 of 5

We spent a week (too short!) at this peaceful cottage. We had stayed at another waterfront property on Spruce Head Island last year with a great view, but this one has it beat. The cottage is compact, but is laid out well and has all the equipment and other amenities one might need. The knotty pine interior gives the place a fresh, rustic look and feel. There is no TV, but with the spectacular view outside and so much to do and see in the surrounding area, you won't miss it. Sandy and Cliff, the personable owners, live in the house across the lawn. We had several lovely conversations with them. They were willing to answer any questions we had. Would we stay here again, if we came back to this part of Maine? Absolutely!

Quaint cottage by the sea

  • 4 of 5

Sandy was an excellent hostess. She was great with giving suggestions for activities and places to eat. The property was clean, well equipt, and very cozy. We enjoyed the view from the porch and the warm fireplace. It was a very pleasant trip.
