Prime location, 360 degree views, pool, cool breezes, an architectural gem
Our spacious colonial home is in a prime location for exploring Merida's historic Centro district. The kitchen is well equipped, we have free hi-speed internet, TV, a large swimming pool, top quality king size beds and each room is beautifully decorated. This house was featured on House Hunters International in 2012.
Each bedroom on the ground level has a king sized bed and it's own bathroom with shower. Each bedroom has a walk out. One bedroom on the main floor walks out to an interior court yard, the other walks out to the pool. The Master bedroom/family suite occupies the entire 2nd floor. It consists of 2 bedrooms (1 with king bed that leads into the second bedroom with 2 twin beds), a bathroom, a dressing room and it's own private patio. The rooms are very large and spacious.
Our entrance leads into a sitting area/TV room and indoor eating area. Walk further you will enter our kitchen that has 2 walk outs, one to a court yard with BBQ and the other walks out to the pool and a large terrace with outdoor dinning options.
Our roof top terrace has a 360 degree view over Merida. Watch the sunset over Santiago church and watch it come up over the main square. The roof top terrace comes complete with a wet bar, dumb waiter, seating area, dining area, toilet, sun deck and birds eye viewing deck.
Cooling breezes and airflow thru this house, created by the architectural structure when you open the doors to the living spaces and height of the walls in the courtyards, keep it cool and comfortable. Air conditioning is rarely needed, but available.
Each morning the parrots fly over and each evening they return. Sit on the roof top and see them everyday, sometimes in flocks of hundreds of birds.
Our central location means you are walking distance to all that Merida offers. 1 block away from Santiago market where you can buy fresh fruit, vegetables, fish and meat every day. We have local restaurants close by that will suit every budget. Only 4 blocks to Santa Lucia and only 5 blocks to the main square, the Zocalo. Please do note that on Friday's and Saturday's Merida becomes party central. We have 2 fountains that provide white noise and the bedrooms are off the street. However, should you require absolute peace and quite on weekends, we recommend renting a Hacienda in the countryside or a house out in the one of the quieter neighbourhoods as Centro is noisy on the weekends.

About Nicolette Morris
We fell in love with Merida on our first visit for a friends wedding in 2013. We are passionate about food and wine. We have a small holding on Vancouver Island and raise our own grass fed animals for meat, milk, eggs and grow all our own organic vegetables. We love anything to do with arts and culture. So Merida was just perfect for us and we were thrilled to finally buy our dream vacation home this year when we purchased Casa Chablis. My husbands' work and the animals keep us in Canada for most of the year so we have decided to open Casa Chablis for holiday rentals and hope that we can share just a little of the joy we have found in our holidays in Merida with you.
Nicolette Morris purchased this House in 2014
Why Nicolette Morris chose Barrio de Santiago
We purchased this property for 2 reasons, one was the location, you can't beat it. The 2nd reason was because the house has really excellent air flow. There is always a cool breeze and we purchased during one of the hottest months of the year. A cool oasis was key for us. We wanted to experience the indoor/outdoor lifestyle Merida has to offer and this house is just perfect for that. It's always comfortable and cool. The constant breeze also helps to keep the mosquitos at bay, a very important consideration in a tropical climate.
What makes this House unique
Unique benefits of this house: * the constant breezes created by the architectural structure causing a circulatory draft * the fantastic array of patios and courtyards that allow you to follow the sun or shade according to your preference anytime of the day * the absolutely breathtaking views of Merida from the huge and very comfortable 3rd floor patio and 4th floor viewing deck * The sheer size of the house and many patios, courtyards and living areas and the beautiful architectural detail of this Henry Ponce renovation

A lovely relaxing home in central Merida
Like so many house in Mexico, the street and the outside of this house belies the beauty inside that included several open air seating areas, three bedrooms with private ensuites, air conditioners and fans (perfect for our group of three couples); a well equipped kitchen; three dining areas; a small but refreshing pool; attractive water features and landscaping that included a huge cactus that housed a nesting pair of doves which we saw as a good omen. The top floor bar and seating area was magical for watching the sun set.
This house hits the sweet spot between elegance and comfort. As one member of our group said 'I would recommend this place to anyone going to Merida'. The six of us are all very well travelled and have rented several houses in several countries. This one was certainly one of the best.
The owner is wonderful to deal with and the onsite staff very helpful.
My only bit of advise especially if you are driving as we were, is to get very specific directions since Merida has a complicated street numbering system and our GPS let us down.
Noisy area and property needs updating
Great location except every Friday and Saturday their is an outdoor disco one street away which is very loud until 3 am. Doors and windows closed, air conditioner on, yet you felt you were on the dance floor. Take your ear plugs.
Kitchen needs updating, very small for such a large house. The furniture is very tired. The house couches and outdoor furniture is in need of a good cleaning at a minimum. They were badly stained. Not all air fans moved the air. Doors did not close.
This is a three bedroom, with the forth bedroom off the master with two twin beds.
Pool pump was not working properly. After several service calls they could not repair.
Overall this house needs to be updated. Too bad.
We work very hard to maintain our property to the highest, reasonable standard and accurately represent it on the website, including the details about the neighbourhood and noise. I have as yet, not come across a neighbourhood in Centro that is not noisy. You need to go to the suburbs and even then the traffic noise is high.
We were in Merida doing renovations right before this group arrived and when we left our property was in the best shape it has ever been.
As this is the first ever review that is this negative, and this after we had just spent a week doing maintenance and updates to our property, we are rather baffled as everyone else has always felt that the value for money was there and left excellent reviews.
Beautiful casona in the old quarter of Merida.
Casa Chablis was a hidden gem. There was more than enough space for our group of 7. The courtyard, pool and terraces were spectacular. The property is beautifully decorated and quite comfortable. Wifi, AC and laundry provide modern convenience while the architecture, furnishings and appointments scream colonial charm.
The property is located in the Santiago neighborhood, which is a 10 minute walk from the plaza mayor. The immediate surroundings are quaint and there are plenty of things to do in and around the Plaza de Santiago just around the corner.
We will definitely stay here again!
Absolutelyerfect spot for exploring Centro Merida!
We were 2 families, 4 adults and 4 kids ages 9-12.
The location just can't be beat. A car is completely unnecessary with culture, restaurants, shopping and ATM just blocks away in any direction.
The airflow in the house kept us cool even in 95F+ weather. We did run the AC at night for comfort but kept the temperature at 23-24C. The pool stays chilled due to limited direct exposure to the sun which makes a quick dip very refreshing. No one complained of being hot.
The 3rd floor patio was our fave for morning coffee and late afternoon cocktails. The fridge on the 3rd floor was a bonus (saving us many trips for more cerveza). Perhaps we were lucky because every afternoon the breeze would kick up and keep us very comfortable. The patio just off the kitchen and near the pool was our lounge spot during the early afternoon heat.
All of the beds were firm and comfortable with wonderful linens to match. And each room's decor fit with the style of the home and made us feel even more like we were living the life of the rich and famous.
The kitchen was much better than we are used to (we've rented MANY houses in Mexico) with quality pans, plenty of glasses, plates and bowls. The grill was awesome! We did much less cooking than normal because Merida has so many excellent places to dine but otherwise if you want to cook this place provides.
The house staff was excellent. I would recommend that you ask Yoli, the housekeeper, to cook dinner for you one evening -- it was superb. We had a few minor issues that the house manager, Rosalinda, took care of expeditiously. Other than that everything worked well and as expected.
We hired the recommended local guide to take us to Uxmal and to have lunch with Miguel a Mayan shaman. This was the highlight of our trip. I can't emphasize enough how awesome it was to have Rodolfo show us his culture -- both past and present. Lunch with Miguel's family in a teeny-tiny town (Chapab) was something we will always remember.
There's a bakery across the street from the house that opens around 8am that offers breakfast but we used it mostly for pastries.
This house -- and the city -- will not disappoint you. We heartedly recommend Casa Chablis!
Fabulous house in Merida
Our stay at Nicolette's was superb! The casa is outfitted with everything you need for a wonderful visit to Merida. The roof terrace was our favorite place for afternoon naps after a swim in the pool. The location is perfect. We walked everywhere. Merida feels very safe both day and night. Jolie was very helpful and kept the place clean and fresh for us during our stay. Rudolf was AMAZING. He took us on several excursions and was a very knowledgeable guide. We learned so much about the Mayan culture from him. He went above and beyond what we expected. Nicolette was quick to answer any questions and made us feel very welcomed in her beautiful home. Muchas gracias!
Great to be back!
This was our third stay at Casa Chablis and this visit once again, lived up to our expectations. For my wife and I, this is our private getaway. Casa Chablis is a home far away from the hustle bustle of daily life where we can reconnect, relax and just enjoy each other. Located within walking distance to great restaurants and historical landmarks, its the perfect place if you want to enjoy all that Merida has to offer, or just hang around the pool in this very private home.
Located just one block from the popular Santiago Park and square, our home is an easy walk to many of the attractions, restaurants, bars and shops in Merida's Centro Historico .... Merida is truly a walking city and our home is in a prime location to take full advantage of this.
