Spruce Head Lobster Village, Ocean Front House

Bedrooms 2
Property type house
Minimum Stay 7 nights

About the property

Home on the ocean with 2 bedrooms

This ocean front two bedroom fully furnished home is nestled among spruce trees with a deck and dock overlooking the ocean and a salt-water cove, a very private and serene setting. It is located at Spruce Head, an island connected to the mainland by a causeway. From the deck, the tidal water can be watched. Tidal water means that there are ten feet of water at the water’s edge when the tide is in and a quarter mile of clam-flats when the tide is out. A great array of feeding birds of the sea and the shore can be observed such as; sandpipers, ducks, shags, seagulls and great blue herons. Harbor seals have been seen diving for breakfast or dinner.

Your fun-filled week may include visiting lighthouses, hiking, walking on the rocks and enjoying the beaches. You may also experience such excursions as whale and seal watching, schooner cruises or taking the ferry to one of our islands.

Within a fifteen minute drive is an eighteen-hole golf course with a view of the Atlantic Ocean. Camden Hills offer hiking trails with spectacular views of Penobscot Bay. You can rent a bike or enjoy an afternoon kayaking around the Muscle Ridge Islands. Kayak rentals are available locally, including day trips with a luncheon on one of the islands.

To appease your intellectual side, the Farnsworth Museum, the Shore Village Museum and the Owls Head Transportation Museum are also nearby. One can view paintings by Andrew Wyeth, lights from lighthouses, an air show, or attend an antique auto auction.

Our unique central location also allows for day trips to Arcadia National Park or the International Ferry Service to Nova Scotia, all located in Bar Harbor. In the opposite direction, Freeport offers the famous L.L. Bean store plus many outlet shops. But of course if you prefer to stay close to home on Spruce Head Island, we have many unique and quaint shops (including antique) in the downtowns of Rockland, Thomaston and Camden.

Dining out can also be a unique experience. Enjoy a lobster on one of the wharfs, a meal at a European bistro, or at one of many of our “Down East” restaurants, all located within a 15 minute drive. However, you may wish to dine in- it has a fully equipped kitchen that includes a microwave, gas grill, toaster, stove, refrigerator and coffee maker. You can also get cooked lobsters at the wharf at the end of the lane to eat at home.

Whispering Spruce is available from June 1st through the end of October. It has two bedrooms with queen size beds in each. Bath towels and bed linens are provided for your convenience. There is a large flat screen TV with cable service, and wifi service for your convenience. There is also good cell phone reception.

Keywords: 2 bedroom house in coastal setting, close to beaches, museums, golfing, hiking trails, day sail trips, kayaking, shopping, festivals, and many well known restaurants.

Nicer than the photos !

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed this comfortable, welcoming home very much. It isn't so fancy you feel you have to tiptoe, or worry about scratching somebodies white tiled floor. The outside space is lovely for morning coffee and afternoon cocktails. The house layout is a bit quirky, but does not interfere at all with enjoying it. It has a family feel and an eclectic collection of books and memorabilia. Homey, I guess you'd call it. You can open the windows and enjoy the sea breeze. There are enough kitchen things to make anything you'd like! I took the liberty of moving a small pyramid gong from a hook on the front lawn to the back deck so we could hear its melodious chime when the wind blew. That's classic Maine ! The rocky beach is a short walk up a lane where you can find bearing apple trees from an abandoned overgrown homestead. ( They'd make good jelly.) Along your walk there is a field of delicate Queen Anne's Lace waving the breeze . It's called a weed but makes a beautiful cut flower. Up the lane is a working lobster wharf , where piles of colorful lobster traps are stacked, with beautifully coiled ropes. If you keep walking over the bridge to Patten's Point there is a charming walk to see other Mainers houses. Don't miss the fellow with all the mermaids and the gigantic metal boat keel or the lady with the enormous sloping lawn of flowers and bird houses. One family had Dahlias the size of frisbees and giant snowball hydrangeas. We didn't meet the owner but she was very kind whenever we communicated by email. I do have to echo one other reviewer- its very hard to find at night . I knocked on the door of a lighted porch and two very polite, but very drunk fellows said "We don't know where it is Lady, but you can stay here if you can't find it ! " The key is to go down the hill, right before the barn like structure where the road dead ends.

Awesome Family Vacation

  • 5 of 5

This house was exactly what we needed for some family down time. It's almost in the middle between Portland and Bar Harbor so we were really able to explore the coast of Maine. The house was a perfect size for us. It was cute and homey and clean. Donna was fantastic to work with and was so helpful returning some items our daughter inadvertantly left behind.

Lovely rental

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed this rental. The home is very comfortable and so homey! The views of the water from everywhere is a big plus. Wish we would have rented earlier so we could really have enjoyed the spacious decks and water access. The bed was awesome. Make sure you arrive before dark as it is a little difficult to find in the dark! Would recommend highly.
