About Shadow Mountain Ranch
'FIND A NEED AND FILL IT has been a guiding principle for both Loretta, my wife of 65 years, and myself. When I retired from my career as a teacher and school administrator and she retired from her career as a nurse, rather then have me drive her to work and play golf until time to bring her home, we looked around to see what needs we could find. Loretta quickly saw a need for overnight housing since Julian was rapidly becoming a center for tourism. Bed-and-breakfast was such a new concept in California that our friends asked if we were going to serve breakfast in bed. Nobody knew much about how to proceed so we just opened our doors and started. To say that it was an instant success would be an understatement. There was a very real need, and both of us, having spent most of our lives in professions that served people, were ideally suited to it.

Lovely upstairs unit with comfortable deck, good bed and furnishings, spotlessly clean. Lots of old fashioned accents--and a few inconveniences. For example a mannequin in the corner in full wedding gown took up valuable space that could have been better used while the treadle sewing machine provided nostalgia and a place to set things. The pot bellied gas-log stove worked perfectly and gave heat when we needed it. There is a lovely sitting nook adjoining the bedroom area surrounded by windows and containing two comfortable chairs, a footstool and a large TV cabinet . My big disappointment.....instead of a functioning television in that cabinet there was a small refrigerator and a microwave while a small old-fashioned looking TV sat on top of the cabinet with reception similar to what I remembered in televisions from the 50's. It would have been so nice to relax there and watch a movie, the news or a ballgame, but the TV was useless. Get rid of the bride and/or the sewing machine to make room for a separate refrigerator/microwave cabinet, put a functioning TV in there, and let that sitting room be properly enjoyed! There was also a delightful outside deck, nicely furnished and looking out into the trees and valley. Saw deer in the Valley, a beautiful blooming wisteria surrounds the parking area. Lovely quiet Pine Hills area with easy 12 minute access to the many Julian restaurants, bird store, bars and shops.
Quite + beautiful place
A secluded gem in the middle of paradise
If you like the Madonna Inn, then I think you’ll appreciate the themes, artistry, and attention to detail that Grandma’s Attic - which is one of several themed rooms in Shadow Mountain Ranch - offers. I found this place completely by accident when looking for a place to stay for a last-minute trip to Julian. Grandma’s Attic was within my price range and it looked like a place that my wife would enjoy. Didn’t expect that I’d enjoy it just as much. The room was beautifully decorated, with an amazing bathroom. Reservations were easy to make, and it was incredibly easy to find the place and get situated. We saw other cars around, but we only saw a couple of other people who worked there. It felt like our private little vacation home, with incredible views of the rest of the ranch, and it was only a couple of miles from the touristy parts of Julian. I had a little trouble finding the spa, but we found it immediately after a very friendly conversation at the number they provided. All in all, it was a magical gem of a place to stay. I had always thought of Julian as a nice little day trip, but if if one of these rooms at Shadow Mountain ranch is available the next time we head over, we’ll definitely be staying for a night or two.
The property is beautiful, lots of interesting things to look at, very quiet. Not as secluded as some of the places I’ve stayed in Julian, given that you are sharing the area with other guests. I thought the hot tub was going to be private and it wasn’t, but still great to have on site. There was no table in our room to play games on, but the outdoor seating areas worked well and the kitchen downstairs had a nice table when it got too dark and cold to play outside. The room was nice, great water pressure in the shower, and it was quick enough to get into town.
Great Place to Stay in Julian!
Charming little vista of unique "cottages" placed at various heights on a hillside...with little surprises that obviously took a lot of time and creativity to put together. Our stay at Grandma's attic, snuggled high among the trees, was perfect for a Fall weekend in Apple Country. Highly recommended (and we have stayed at 40+ room rental places in several countries).
Awesome themed stay with a classic ranch feel
Made friends with some horses and long horns and had an awesome time at the ranch. I would go back
shadow mountain ranch is located in the scenic coastal mountains back of San Diego in pine and oak forest. Once an Apple Orchard itI ' is now a small cattle ranch with Scotch Highland capital and horses. Three of the four rooms look out on the pasture to see the animals grazing peacefully. It was a very successful bed-and-breakfast as a single entity for 29 years before converting to vacation rentals, so check the reviews for all of the rooms.
