Just a short scenic drive from our chalet, are a wide variety of things to do and places to go, that will keep you busy and please everyone... if you choose to step out.
One of the greatest attributes the Adirondack region has to offer, is that you can be completely immersed in nature, enjoying the outdoor activities, but are still within close proximity to major shopping, theme parks and so much more! There is something for everyone, which creates a memorable and happy vacation!
There are numerous horseback riding stables in the area, complete with trail rides or a simple pony ride for the younger equestrians.
White water rafting is a favorite amongst adventure seekers, and with our many rivers nearby, there are multiple choices.
The village of Lake George, is a favorite destination for vacationers and is located just over one half hour away. It has a variety of attractions that will please the whole family. It is positioned on the 32 mile scenic Lake, known as Lake George, Queen of the lakes.
The village consists of a variety of shops where you can purchase anything from souvenirs, apparel and jewelry, to Adirondack style furniture and more. Enjoy the old fashioned candy and Ice cream shops where home made fudge, candy apples, and icecream are favorites with the adults as well as the children! There are many choices for dining, from steak and lobster to pizza and burgers. One of my favorites is 'Georges Restaurant' with its dynamite salad bar and 'all' of the above. Enjoy lunch or dinner in one of the many restaurant/pubs overlooking the scenic lake.
Motor boat rentals are available on the lake as well as a variety of Cruises with different options including lunch , dinner and moonlight cruises.
For the 'thrill seekers', there is para sailing!
A visit to Fort William Henry is always an exciting experience while visiting the village.
There is also 'Water Slide World', a water park located in the village. It is a little bit cheaper than Great Escape water park, although not as big.
A kids favorite? AH, 'The Wax Museum' where you will find Frankenstein, yes, that's what I said 'Frankenstein', outside, greeting everyone, alive and well! NOTE...some of the very little ones are not so fascinated.
Miniature golf is also a must when strolling the village.
In Shepards Park, located in the village, there are live, free concerts on specific evenings, by a wide variety of artists, including the 'Glens Falls Symphony', Jazz musicians, and Chamber Music Ensembles.
Don't forget, every Thursday night during the summer at 9:30 pm are the weekly fireworks over the lake, where everyone brings a blanket, sit's on the grass, while munching on something scrumptious, to watch the impressive show!
If you travel just a bit further south about 10 minutes, you will find 'Six Flags Great Escape Amusement Park/Water slide World.' Rides galore! AND a waterpark... awesome for a hot humid day. They do sell two day passes so you can fit it all in.
Also on the way, you will see the famous Lake George Outlets...great option ladies for a rainy day! Also a favorite for school clothes shopping...shshshsh, don't tell the kids! And while your shopping, dad can bring the kids to 'The Fun Spot' or 'Adventureland', where they have everything from an indoor roller rink and go carts, to laser tag and much more. It is located minutes from the outlets!
There is a Cinema playing the latest movies in the Aviation Mall in Queensbury, as well as the Glen Drive- in, one of the few drive-in's theaters left in America! A great family tradition.
In Lake Luzerne about one half hour away, you will find 'The Painted Pony Rodeo', one of the few professional rodeos. It is definitely worth the trip! The rodeo is held on Wednesday, and Saturday nights. They also have an optional BBQ dinner outside, as featured on the 'Rachel Ray show', and they get their meats from the famous 'Oscars Smokehouse Meats' in Warrensburg, another of Rachel's favorite places about 30 minutes from us. I recommend their smoked bacon and natural kielbasa....its great on the grill or bonfire!
Saratoga Raceway and Casino is another favorite amongst tourists. It is located 50 minutes away in Saratoga Springs. The big races start in August.
Lets not forget Winter activities.
Onsite winter activities include snowshoeing, crosscountry skiing, ice fishing. Near by we have Gore Mountain ski area about 40 minutes away. Rated top 10 best snowmaking in the country! Great skiing/snow boarding. Another ski center is West Mountain, a family oriented ski area, with skiing/snow tubing/snowboarding/night skiing.
Both ski areas are approximatly 40 minutes away.
There are many other attractions in the Adirondack/Lake George region, but to many to list which is why this is one of the most popular vacation spots in the Northeast!
Year Purchased: 2005
About: As a child, I grew up in NYC, with my parents and two older brothers. I studied dance, singing and trumpet. I had a very busy childhood! My father was a trombonist with the New York City Opera at Lincoln Center, so I spent many an afternoon there after school, but not attending the opera. My father formed a Brass Ensemble, including myself, my two brothers and 3 students from The Performing Arts. We rehearsed and performed with the NYC Opera's children's chorus, accompanying them for several years. I also performed in musical theater, so along with studying trumpet, singing and dance, as well as attending school, I had somewhat of a different childhood from the rest of my friends. Summer was always a very special time for my family, we got a moment to relax, take our family vacation's and fell in love with the Adirondack mountains!
Why Stony Creek, NY, USA:
After traveling on many family vacations, I simply fell in love with the Adirondack mountains with all its beauty. Just breathing the fresh air with the scent of the pines and swimming in the crystal clear lakes, was all I needed to fall in love. Coming from NYC, I think it was even more appreciative! I always wanted to live in the Adirondack's, but never thought the day would come when I could finally be here, when ever I chose to be. As I was searching for a vacation home in the Adirondack's, the last property I was to see for the day, was this property! Driving and not knowing what I was about to find.... a dream! What seemed to be a road leading to a desolate area, upon arriving, realized, it was right in the middle of an intimate and charming resort, with a beautiful beach on Harrisburg Lake. My family and I never knew this area existed in all of our travels. What a perfect and unbelievable find!
The Unique Benefits at this Chalet:
What makes this property unique in comparison to others, would be that it is situated on property from the late 1800's and full of history. For a quick history synopsis, the town of Stony Creek was settled in 1795 and established as a town in 1852. It was called West Stony Creek at that time. During that period, extensive logging was done where the main Lodge is located. In 1875, where the Lodge stands, a lumber camp was built by Thomas Wakely. But after the Hemlock trees were taken out, all the logging camps closed. So the building remained unused until fifteen years later in 1890, when it was enlarged and used as a Hotel known as the 'Lake House' owned by John H. Arehart. You will see the actual structure in the pictures. It accommodated 30 guests and was used as a sportsman's hotel, as we are in a hunters paradise here! In 1915 it burned down and was later rebuilt in 1921. It then became The 'Stony Creek Country Club.' In 1935, it was reborn again by Earl Woodward , where he created the well known 'Stony Creek Dude Ranch' The original barn still stands, and the Tavern is the original Post Office and General Store that existed years ago! So coupling the perfect location of being at the END of road and the BEGINNING of the wilderness, the majestic Adirondack mountains, pristine Lake, history, proximity to Lake George AND the amenities...WOW....I think that says it all!!
