Loved our stay

We really enjoyed this little home away from home. The apartment was very clean and well equipped but what we liked most was the beautiful setting with lovely views and friendly horses in the nearby field

nice place if you have a car

nice comfortable apartment, warm and well equipped. However we did not understand that its location is a 30 minute uphill walk from the town. the description merely says 10 minutes from town. our party was 4 x 80+ year olds without a car!! but luckily we managed. the website description should make the issues about location clear

Hi Frankie Thanks so much for your review - I'm glad to hear you enjoyed your stay at the apartment. Perhaps we all walk at different speeds however the apartment is a very gentle slope up from the town with the closest bus stop only an easy 5 minute walk away. Thanks again, Alexander

Apartment with views and animals

Alexander is a wonderful host. He was patient and helpful when we repeatedly had scheduling snafus. His two-level property is cozy and comfy. A nice kitchen, half-bath, and living room upstairs, and two ensuite bedrooms down. We had pasture views out the front and back. Saw many sheep, cows, and a couple of horses. We heard a rooster crow and saw a couple of fancy hens pecking around. It was close to Stromness. On my birthday, we drove out of the driveway to see a flag flying that said "Happy Birthday." I ran over to him and told him it was my birthday. He said he was flying it for a lady across the pasture, and he does it for many people in the neighborhood. That's a good country for flags. Plenty of wind.

Nice place but still in process

Good directions. Clean and quiet with a lovely view. Had trouble with 2 of the 3 toilets. Fortunately my husband is quite handy and fixed one of the toilets so we had 2 which was quite adequate. Stairs extremely steep. Really needs a washer/dryer not just a washer with a drying rack that only fits socks and underwear. Also would need a larger refrigerator if you were cooking meals. We went out for dinner. The owners father David was extremely helpful. We thought we had lost key and tried different ways to get in touch with owner. Never were able to get in touch with him. Fortunately the keys were at one of the places we visited. Otherwise I am not sure what we would have done. Really liked place but felt owner needed to be more responsive. All the other places we stayed had info from owner with recommendations for restaurants, grocery shopping etc etc. This place had a nice binder with nothing in it. A good place that I am sure will be improved over time.

Average at best

Where to start? Directions sent after payment were good, easily found property from Stromness. On arrival at what I thought was the back door, I was disappointed to find an obstacle course of broken broom handles, and the entry splattered with bird droppings. Going inside, I soon found that there was little or no Meadow view, the “back door I mentioned is in fact the only door, the windows to the front are small and,when you are sitting on the not very comfortable sofas, quite high. On to the facilities not infact 3 bathrooms but 2 en-suite shower rooms and a separate toilet. The kitchen was average, nothing special. Bedrooms, fair and down a flight of stairs, each with en-suite shower room. Outlook, almost half by half below ground level and looking wrong way for any Meadow view. The accommodation was in clean order and fair condition. Now back to the bird droppings and obstacle course, once inside I found a note, asking us to shoo away, and not feed the hens! I’d almost taken a tumble on the round poles lying on the door step! A short time later two chickens appeared at the kitchen window. These are obviously well used to people as even chasing them off didn’t deter them. On now to, the claim next to UNESCO world heritage site. Yes, it might be, but if it meant the Ring of Brodgar or Stenness, then next too is a bit of exaggeration, 3.5 to 4 miles of such. In short, average property for price, no real view from window (while seated) Chicken droppings on doorstep, obstacle course at door, we had an elderly guest with us and I dread to think of the consequences if she had stepped on the broken broom handles. TV limited channels no BBC2, not expecting a full SKY package but at least a decent freeview, average Kitchen Average bedrooms, poor seating in lounge.

Many thanks for the average review Brian - I note that it's your only review on HomeAway and was written over four months after your stay. Perhaps for reference it's worth stating the UNESCO site is a 3 minute drive away. For review context I'll attach the 5 Star one given on HomeAway 3 days after you checked out ….. * * * * * "Clean, complete, lovely location We had a great time. Near Stromness

We had a bit of trouble finding the place at first, (Turn left a little past a large hedge, and then drive up a gravel driveway and follow it left to the end of the road) however once we did find it, we found it to be fully satisfactory. It has two large bedrooms on the lower level, each with a private bathroom, and the kitchen has all of the required pots, pans, etc. Thanks

Hey, I'm Alexander, I'm a 27 year old Orcadian and look forward to welcoming you to Stromness Apartments - three apartments built as a result of a barn conversion on my Granny and Grandad's croft of Milldam, where my Mum was born and brought up.
You'll be welcome to walk around the old farm and enjoy the surrounding land and trees that my Grandad and Dad planted (they are not very common in Orkney we like to brag about them!).
I really hope you can come and enjoy Stromness Apartments, and everything Orkney has to offer.
