About the property

Perfect park it and leave it luxury cabin down town, walk to convention center.

Experience Gatlinburg! The Redwood Retreat is a freshly remodeled historic home in the heart of Gatlinburg’s most popular area.

Located a short distance from traffic light 8, this luxuriously appointed cottage that sleeps 7 or more people is an easy 5 minute walk, on level ground, to the Convention Center, Ripley’s Believe It Or Not, Old Smoky Moonshine, Starbucks and everything else the main parkway of Gatlinburg has to offer. You can even walk to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park in about 10 minutes.

This lovely retreat has a Private Theater with a 70' HDTV, true surround sound, Xbox One, Blue Ray DVD player, Charter cable and Netflix. Bring your favorite games and movies; the theatre will blow your mind. If you're a gamer you will love being able to use the sound clues coming through surround sound to navigate your games. To make it easy to connect your electronics to the TV, we've included a 12' HDMI cable that stays permanently attached to the TV. We love to plug it into our computers to use the TV as a giant monitor when we're working on a project together, sharing pictures etc. This dedicated theater room has two walls covered in rich, sound attenuating satin curtains and you'll enjoy all your media from a powered leather recliner sofa, cuddled under soft throw blankets.

From the Private Theatre you can walk into the compact spa-like master bathroom with a huge, custom 2 person heated, jetted tub that has 2 shower heads. The next door opens into the Master Bed Chamber which welcomes you with a king size Kings Down mattress, piles of puffy pillows and a clean, cozy comforter all piled into a sturdy, solid wood sleigh bed. Of course there is a 40' flatscreen HDTV with cable, Netflix and a Blueray DVD player tucked into the corner.

The doors in this part of the house are arranged such that the Theatre, Master-Bath and Master Bed Chamber can be isolated from the rest of the house to make a truly indulgent Master Suite. With this set-up parents can enjoy their own retreat while the kids use the front Living Room room to watch movies. Alternatively, the Master Bathroom and Master Bed Chamber can be isolated so any guest can use the Private Theatre. If the kids are old enough, they can walk 4 minutes to the arcades and Lazer Tag arena at the Space Needle and Ripley's Believe it or Not while parents unwind in the Master Suite.

As you exit the Master Bed Chamber you can turn right into the Bunk Room where there are 5 wonderfully comfortable, memory foam mattresses; two full size and three twin size. Here too, there are piles of pillows for everyone and a 40' flatscreen HDTV with cable, Netflix and a Blueray DVD player.

Across the hall from the Bunk Room is the fully renovated main bathroom. From the hall you wall also see the fresh and fun kitchen with beautifuly refinished original cabinetry, stainless steel appliances and a huge dining room table that can seat 6-8 people. The kitchen is appointed with a coffee maker, electric kettle, 12 sets of dinner ware (1 set includes: dinner plate, small plate, bowl cup, glass, spoon, fork and knife), 8 wine glasses, 8 beer mugs, a stove top cook set, basic bakeware, casserole dishes, pizza pan, blender/food processor, mixer, toaster, large pitcher and general cooking utensils. The Kitchen has a door into the Theatre room, and adjacent to the kitchen are the washer and dryer and a space big enough to set up a queen air-bed if you are coming with a lot of guests (we don't supply any air beds).

The last door out of the hallway brings you to the first room in the house; the luxurious living room. Here you will find an original stone hearth outfitted with a gas fire place, a 42' flat screen TV with true surround sound, and huge leather sectional with 3 recliners in it. What may strike you most is what you see out the front window; the space needle, the sky lift and the mountain the sky lift climbs. From here you really understand just how close you are to all that makes Gatlinburg one of the most popular destinations in the United States. It's all just 5 minutes away, but from inside one of Gatlinburg's original homes, you still feel secluded in this quiet neighborhood.

Outside you'll enjoy the large hot tub with an easy to use cover lifter and a charcoal barbecue with a picnic table on a large marble patio for a pleasant outdoor living area. With the location of the Redwood Retreat, we are sure you will really appreciate having private, off street parking for 3-4 cars. There are paid parking lots further from downtown than this. The gently sloping ramp going to and from your car means the only time you'll have to lift your rolling bag is to get it out of the car! Your first adventure doesn't have to be getting your luggage into the cabin!

The hot tub is about 40 feet from the door, we chose this location for a couple of reasons. First, for the view toward Gatlinburg. Second, when it's fire fly season, the fire flies in the trees behind the house and around the jacuzzi are magical. Finally, the ivy covered stone walls of this hot tub alcove have historic charm that we just can't get enough of. We arranged the hot tub cover lifter so when it's open, the cover itself provides privacy from the neighbors to the south. Please bring a bathing suit as this hot tub is not perfectly isolated; we sacrificed a little privacy to maintain the views we enjoyed the most. After your stay, we would love to get your feed back on this arrangement. We love it, but we want to make sure it's ideal for you too!

Beneath the surface of this home are the systems that you should never have to think about: The new 2 stage heating and cooling system with brand new duct work and state of the art air filtration will quietly keep your air clean and comfortable. Meanwhile the top of the line tankless water heater provides unlimited hot water; that's right every-body can take showers at the same time and all your guests can bathe without the last few having to suffer through a chilly shower. Please note this is not an 'instant' water heater; the hot water still has to travel through lengths of pipe to get to your faucet, so it can take 30 seconds to a minute to flow hot. Each bathroom has a ventilation fan that will automatically turn on when the humidity increases and an auxiliary heater so you can stay toasty warm after your shower.

Historic Charm: This home was built in 1934, throughout it's life it has been a private home, an over night rental and a long term rental home. At one point the head of Gatlinburg's Garden club lived here, we suspect she planted the tree you will see about a foot outside the front window. Originally there were a number of homes just like this one in this neighborhood. Most were demolished but one was so well loved that it was detached from it's foundation, loaded on a truck and taken to the owners larger property in Sevierville. This one has survived. Its former owner kept it well maintained so when we bought it we were able to live in it as our primary home for a year.

During that year, we learned what we loved and what we wanted to change; though the home was well maintained it was was also very outdated and had accumulated a lot of wear and tear over the years. After walking downtown for coffee, food and entertainment almost every day for a year, we decided that this home was something we needed to share with others who love the Smoky Mountains and Gatlinburg; the location was just so perfect that we felt obligated to share it. So we bought a small 'fixer' in Sevier County, made it livable and moved in. Then the work on the Redwood Retreat work began. Months and many dollars later it was finally ready for your arrival. We did our best to maintain the historical charm of this cottage while making it a luxury getaway fit for discerning travelers.

Getting back to the Tree:

It took me months to figure out what kind of tree this is because it's not a common tree of the Smoky Mountains. It is a Costal Redwood. It is the same tree that has huge parks dedicated to it in California. It just so happens that the Smoky Mountains, with their high humidity and frequently misty conditions provide a great climate for the Costal Redwood. Needless to say, we think the tree is just wonderful. It will eventually encroach upon the house, and that is just fine as there are plenty of techniques that we can use in the future to maintain the house alongside the tree; for now we just want you to be able to enjoy the 'Redwood Retreat' tucked beneath its boughs.

About Rebecca

After retiring from the Army as an Apache Helicopter Aviator the owner needed to refocus her detail oriented mind and boundless energy. Remaking the Redwood Retreat, and outfitting it was the perfect project. The results are a thing of beauty, a vacation home like no other. The ongoing management of this work is too important to be ‘outsourced’ and so the details remain under her watchful and close supervision.

Rebecca purchased this house in 2013

Why Rebecca chose Gatlinburg

Location and Charm

The seller of this home 'interviewed' several potential buyers before sitting down with your innkeeper, Rebecca.

The previous owner believed that the home, its Coastal Redwood and historic charm should be appreciated and preserved. He finally found a resonating spirit in Rebecca and the home was purchased in 2013.

Rebecca lived in the home for one year, making notes, drawing designs and formulating her plan. For her the important things were comfort, cleanliness, fun and the details, as well as keeping true to the historical values of an original and historic Gatlinburg home.

In 2014 the plan was finished and the work began. For comfort, the central heat and air system was replaced with a new high efficiency gas furnace. She had a new state of the art tank-less hot water system installed so her guests would never run out of hot water. New plumbing fixtures, new lighting and updated electrical, hardwired fire alarms, a gas fireplace and handicap accessible ramp were all important comfort features and were all completed in early 2015.

For cleanliness every surface in the home would be refinished. All of the walls and ceilings as well as the moldings and trims would be cleaned, sanded and refinished with a safe and non toxic period correct amber Shellac. This kept the distressed historic charm of the old growth pine panels as they were originally intended.

The floors throughout the whole house were removed and new flooring was installed. The flooring is non slip, no V.O.C. (volatile organic compounds) luxury vinyl wood tile.

Every effort was taken to select, when possible Micro-ban products; for a cleanliness you feel the moment you walk in.

On a playful and romantic note, she managed to fit a huge two person Jacuzzi with two shower heads into a cozy master bathroom. She designed a dedicated home theater room, made the front porch ramp a place to converse and view the city below.

Now finished, all that is left is to share her dream with you

What makes this house unique

It can not be overstated that the location of this home is the most unique factor. Very very few vacation rentals in Gatlinburg share this ideal situation.

Amazing home and hosts!

  • 5 of 5

Our family had a lovely time exploring Gatlinburg and staying at this charming home. The hosts were beyond helpful and accommodating. The home was immaculate, cozy, yet spacious and the close proximity to “the strip” can’t be beaten! We will definitely be staying at The Redwood Retreat again! Thank you, Darrin & Rebecca, for making our weekend so stress free and enjoyable!

Very Nice Cottage in Gatlinburg

  • 5 of 5

This was our first stay at the Redwood Retreat and we Loved it. The cottage has been updated thru-out. The living room is a great place to sit and relax after walking all over town. The home is convenient to all of the places we enjoy eating, including the Cherokee Grill, that was recommended by the owners. The king size bed was very comfortable, that is big plus for my husband and I. We also enjoyed the hot tub in the evening..We thank you again Rebecca and Darrin for letting us stay in your home.

Excellent house in excellent location

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed this rental very much and highly recommended it. The host was a pleasure to deal with. Although the house is very cozy, it has been recently refurbished and had excellent finishes on the interior. It is just two short blocks from the main street in Gatlinburg, but was very quiet and secluded. The kitchen was extremely well-equipped. Hot tub worked out well. The instructions and documentation were very thorough. The towels and toiletries were very generous.

The only negatives were fairly trivial. We could not get the icemaker to start. Overall, an enjoyable rental which we would be happy to use again.

Meaty and tidy cottage steps from downtown

  • 5 of 5

Our family of seven stayed in this super spacious cottage for a week. Lots of comfortable beds with clean sheets. Plenty of room in the well stocked kitchen. Jacuzzi was warm and inviting. More than enough TVs. Bathrooms all updated, yet kept their vantage charm. We all around loved it!

Your Front Yard

According to the Englishmans Walking Calculator it takes 5 minutes to walk from the Redwood Retreat to the Gatlinburg Convention Center which is .2 miles door to door. The same five minute walk will put you in the heart of all that is best about Gatlinburg. Have a morning coffee at Starbucks or breakfast at the local favorite Bearland Grill. You can shop in the afternoon at hundreds of local and national brand stores. Take an aerial tram ride and snow ski at Ober Gatlinburg. See Ripley’s Believe it or Not, Ripleys Aquarium or the world famous artisans at Arrowcraft Southern Highlands Craft Guild. Enjoy dinner at Bubba Gumps, the Cherokee Grill or Tennessee’s famous Calhoun’s Barbeque just to name a few. Finish the day with a night out of fun and laughs tasting Tennessee’s first legal Moonshine at Ole Smoky Moonshine and singing 'Scaryoakie' with Buzz at Crawdaddies. Play in an arcade, discover the fun of hunting each other in laser tag and take in the views from atop the Space Needle or enjoy a round of miniature golf. The Redwood Retreat is an easy and relaxing short walk away from all this and so much more.

Your Back Yard

The Great Smoky Mountains National Park is less than ½ a mile away with the first hiking trail less than ten minutes away from your front door by foot. Being the only temperate rain forest in the United States the Great Smoky Mountains National Parks' beauty and diversity are unparalleled. Rejuvenating activities such as hiking, horse back riding, trout fishing, biking, or driving the historic nature trail are available to you via a short walk, or a very short drive. From your driveway you can easily get to the Motor Nature Trail in a few minutes without having to fight traffic, even in the high seasons. Consider this a hike-by-car through the Great Smoky Mountains for those who can't, or don't want to hike. It is our favorite Sunday drive, though it is closed if snow or ice are a possibility, which tends to be most of the winter. A convertible car or open top jeep would be a spectacular way to take in this two-hour-or-so tour of the Smokies.

Whether walking, biking, or driving, it is comforting to both your mind and wallet to remember that the Redwood Retreat has its own parking for 3 to 4 cars, safe and secure out your front door.

A vacation should be fun, but no matter what it will involve travel, luggage and getting situated. Many Smoky Mountain vacation homes are located on steep winding roads, with steeper stairs to climb at the end of your drive. We wanted to keep adventure as an ‘elective’; there are no winding roads or steep stairs to the Redwood Retreat. A gentle 5 foot wide ramp from your vehicle to the front door will greet you at your journeys end, you will never have to lift your rolling suitcase except to get it out of your car. As much as you will enjoy sitting and looking through the front picture window at the mountains, sky lift and space needle while enjoying a fire and planning your next Gatlinburg adventure, don't be surprised to find a little face looking in at the scene inside! A squirel or two have decided the front window is thier own 'aquarium of humans'. They are always a source of entertainment for us! Beware if one becomes enamored with you; he can flirt for hours!
