Perfect Property, Great Location, Awesome Owner

  • 5 of 5

We were visiting the area for our son's Navy commissioning ceremony. The location was perfect for all the sights in Norfolk. You can hear the National Anthem each morning from the base across the bay. The house had everything we needed for a perfect family get together. The house was beautiful on the inside, right on the water. Lots of fun with ducks for the kids. We watched a sailboat race from the sun room and though our first day included a lot of rain, we had a great time. We enjoyed cooking together, eating together, playing family games in he sun room into the wee hours and walking on the nearby beach. We found sea glass and visited the sunset grill within walking distance up the road which was delicious! We did not hear the live music, but they have it almost every night. Mary was so helpful making sure we knew what all was around and worked with the cleaning crew so we could get in early and leave after check out time. Mary and her house were very special. She and the house attended to every detail for a great stay. We definitely recommend this property for holiday fun!

Owner's Response: Wow, thank you for sure a wonderful review. I'm so glad you had fun, even if it did rain some of the time. My husband's boat, the one with the yellow hull, won that race. I'm so glad you guys created some great memories together at our LIfe on a Sandbar. Mary.

A great place to relax

  • 5 of 5

Our family had a wonderful week at Life on a Sandbar. Mary was wonderful! She was quick to answer questions and most accommodating. We so appreciated all her help and information about the sailboat races. Life on a Sandbar is pleasant and comfortable. Our family enjoyed visiting and eating together on the patio overlooking the bay and our daughters shared some special "sister time" together in the kayaks. We couldn't have asked for a nicer place for a relaxing time away. Thank you Mary for sharing your vacation home with us.

Wonderfully relaxing and charming home!

  • 5 of 5

My friends and I needed an escape from DC and decided to look for rental homes in Norfolk/Virginia Beach. We came upon this lovely home and the owner, Mary, was so easy and pleasant to work with while booking our stay. Once we arrived at the house, we were happy to see it was just as we imagined from the pictures - charming and cozy and right on the water! We definitely spent more time outside sitting on the patio enjoying the view than inside! This home was a perfect setting for a relaxing weekend away from DC - I would highly recommend staying here and will definitely look to see if it's available next time I travel to Norfolk!

Wonderful place to relax!

  • 5 of 5

We had a lovely time at this house--the owners have made an effort to make sure everything you might need is available. We visited with our 12 year old yellow lab and she loved the back yard. The sun room is a wonderful place to sit and watch the water while drinking a cup of coffee in the morning. The towels in each of the bedrooms are very nice--much more luxurious than most vacation rentals. We spent one day at the beach and another day visiting historical sites (Jamestown and Yorktown) which were an easy drive from the house. Thanks for letting us borrow your home for a few days!

The house was lovely and beautifully furnished. The kayaks were a lot of fun and the setting was relaxing and picturesque. Mary, the host, was delightful.

The backyard view was amazing, my experience with Mary (the owner), not so much.

  • 1 of 5

The backyard view is beautiful, the house is old but clean and roomy. Patio furnishings in bedrooms. My experience with the whole process and stay at the house was quite off putting.

After I reserved the house online, Mary tacked on a refundable deposit. That was fine but caused me undue stress as the original payment pended causing a security flag on my account. This caused more work for me with manual contact to my bank to explain. Then Mary called, messaged and texted almost daily looking for the payment and to 'tell me things' about the house. This was a nuisance for me during work hours but I remained pleasant.

Parking is limited, nearly nonexistent and Mary let me know they would have the driveway blocked with about 50 bicycles on one of the days I am there. I still paid the full rental fee.

Mary likes to pop in, and she did just that while my family was enjoying an afternoon together. She stayed with the neighbor in his backyard for quite sometime after that and it just seemed awkward. I felt 'watched' the entire time I stayed at her house.

My trip consisted of my mother, brother, husband and myself along with our two small dogs. We took my Mom to see her grandson (my nephew) who is in the Navy. My mother has breast cancer and wanted to see him. We are from Georgia. I told Mary this, and she actually told me what room to 'put her' in. (Goodness.)

Mary wanted to know everything about me and my family and why we were going and what we would be doing which was very odd. She asked very detailed questions. I was very stressed and nervous the entire trip because Mary made me so uncomfortable (with her questions, her attempts at planning our trip and our days--she seemed to 'always be there').

When our trip ended, we left the home as it was outside of 'being lived in' for 3 days but Mary refused to return the refundable deposit but has yet to tell me why (one month later). She tells me she was 'in tears' when she saw the home after we left but not one inkling of a description as to why. She says she has pictures but has not sent them. This is questionable to someone who paid her approximately $1500 for a 3 night stay. Dishes were washed and put away, wet towels were off the floor, there was nothing out of place except perhaps a pillow or an unmade bed. Us middle aged old folks did no more than cook a bit, watch TV and talk. I'm baffled, but I'll never rent through HomeAway again. Just know what you are signing up for if you rent from Mary.

Owner's Response: Pamela, Willoughby Spit is a charming community, with great people. We brought this home and plan to retire in our bay home someday. Currently, we live in Richmond and very rarely get to meet our guest. During the summer weekends, we sail and anchor around on the Chesapeake Bay. We keep our sailboat in Hampton, the other side of the tunnel. Twice a year the Willoughby Spit community have something called the Willoughby Wobble. Everyone bikes to 5 houses that are hosting for 45 minutes. We came into Willoughby for this community event. My neighbor was hosting at 3pm on the Sunday you wanted to stay. I did tell you this before I accepted your booking and you said that would be ok. I asked if you wanted me to stop by to introduce myself when I was down and you said yes. I did go to my neighbor’s house after we met for about 45 minutes to help him finish setting up. Everything (including rates, fees, no smoking, only 3 queens size beds, 2 parking places, etc.) is stated on my VRBO page. The pictures of the bedrooms are on the photo slides. In the Tiki Room (Master Bedroom), you can see part of the teak steamer chair, which has never been used outside. It is a comfortable place to read a book away from others. There is also a small mosaic table (you can’t see), so you have a place for your drink. Both can be folded and put in the closet so there is room to put a playpen, if needed and not feel crowded. In each the Under the Sea Room & Aloha Room there is an Outer Banks Wooden chair, so a person can get away and read, if they like. You can see one of these chairs in the Aloha Room photo. These are the only “patio furnishings” in the bedrooms. I’m sorry my décor was not to your liking. As for the refundable (if no pet damage) deposit, only you and one other have not received the pet deposit back. Not every house is for everyone. Our home is in a neighborhood and is not a hotel. I’m sorry you were not happy and perhaps my kindness was misunderstood. Looking at all the other reviews, I’m glad 19 out of the 20 reviews were very happy. We love our house on a sandbar and want to share her with others who are looking for a relaxing, quiet get away in a clean home with a gorgeous view, both day & night (I wish I could capture the nighttime view in a photo). BTW, you sent in your review after I provided you pictures of the dog damage to the sofa and how you left the rest of house. I wish you and your family well. Most sincerely, Mary
