About the property

Be sure to check out our September & October pricing!

Hale Aloha Cottage is an oceanfront guest house located in the magical neighborhood of Puako on the Big island of Hawaii. The Main house is also available for rental at VRBO674382.

Puako is one of the sunniest destinations in Hawaii with a unique blend of old Hawaii charm and one of the most pristine coastlines in the islands. Each day is filled with the sound of the sea, coconut trees swaying in the tropical breeze and the beauty of Hawaii. You share the ocean with sea turtles and play on an oceanfront rich with sea life. Your day ends with one of the most stunning sunsets in the world

Typical of the beachfront homes that have made Puako so beloved, Hale Aloha is ideal for a couple who appreciates a sense of place in a perfectly maintained Hawaiian-style beach house. This property is perfect for lounging and enjoying the sunshine and ocean air. Ocean access is adjacent to the Hale Aloha which offers an ideal location to go fishing, snorkeling, diving, surfing, kayaking, and stand-up paddling.

Hale Aloha was built in the 1950's, but was completely renovated without losing its Old Hawaiian charm in 2014. This colorful and exceptionally clean cottage has been expertly renovated and restored with fun and playful decor. Everything is new, cabinets, plantation doors, stainless steel appliances, wood louver windows, bedding, towels, kitchen accessories and utensils, plumbing fixtures, tile in bath and kitchen area, right down to new paint inside and out.

The warm ocean is your swimming pool. Protected and only 2-5 feet deep with a mostly sandy bottom, it is home to green sea turtles and colorful fish. Just beyond the reef-protected lagoon is the best snorkeling, scuba diving and kayaking in Hawaii. In low tide the tidal pools will inspire, and in January through May, you can watch the 45 foot humpback whales play and breach. Morning walks along the two-lane Puako Beach Drive will find you at Puako's famous ancient Hawaiian rock carvings, the largest example of Petroglyphs in the world. There is also a grocery store in walking

About Mike & Diane Prohoroff

We are residents of the Big Island living in Waimea. There is something magical about The Big Island and when you spend some time in Puako you will understand. We have many friends who have homes at Puako and have enjoyed spending time there over the years. We purchased Hale Aloha for a family retreat to be shared with our children, grandchildren and guests. The community retains its laid-back friendly atmosphere. Puako is a short drive to the world class amenities and resorts of the Kohala Coast, but offers a unique Hawaiian vacation. Our goal is to keep our rates reasonable and encourage our guests to return on a regular basis.

Paradise in Puako

  • 5 of 5

Located on the Kohala Coast this quaint little village of Puako is great place to stay. The accommodation sits right on the water where the winds and waves will lull you to sleep each night. The sunset is right outside your door each evening. The little bungalow on stilts is conveniently located near Mauna Kea, the Fairmont Orchid, Mauna Lani, Waikoloa, and Hapuna Beach. We stayed five nights, and this locale served as a great base camp to explore the northern half of the Big Island. We would definitely return.

Perfect little beachside cottage

  • 5 of 5

The cottage was great. Only downside might be the lanai for the main house is right next to, and right below, the cottage. Couple of nights had some noisy neighbors who seemed to be enjoying some marijuana. Didn't really care about that, but smoke was drifting into the cottage. Love the area, Puako, away from the large tourist meccas to the south.

An oceanfront haven of relaxation!

  • 5 of 5

It's so nice when the pictures really do tell the story. We arrived at 118 Puako after meandering down the peaceful ocean side lane. It was exactly what we expected. It's an ocean bungalow for 2. The open air veranda, coffee or drinks on the wrap around lanai, naps on the lower deck (Oceanside), dozing off and waking to the crash of the waves, ocean rock-hopping to see the sunning sea turtles (Sheldon and the gang) and the geckos! So much fun. We fell asleep the first night to a lulling sound that we could not quite describe. We discovered our gecko pals the next morning - on the window sill, outside the front door waiting to share a bit of muffin, on the lanai in the afternoon, on the trunk of the palm trees - so funny. The cottage is so open and relaxing. Close to everything on the Kona side. Located on a cute lane - perfect for walks or a bike ride (bikes were provided), an ocean stroll or some great snorkeling. It was the perfect getaway for 2. *The only thing I would request for the next trip would be a fan in the bathroom for the ladies - hair and makeup. It gets a bit humid and the air is still.

Loved the cottage and would most certainly return. We were amused by the chickens, quail and mongoose that ran rampant around the island. Be sure to dine at Merrimans more than once if you can as well as the Hawaiian Style Café, Red Water Café, the Malasada donut truck, Hapuna Bar & Grill and Kohala burgers. Pololu hike is a must, the Wai'pi'O Valley hike and beach, kayak/snorkel trip with Hawaiian Surf & kayak, the Observatory (take a jacket and pants) and the Heavenly Hawaiian Kona coffee plantation.

A perfect introduction to Hawaii! Thanks Mike & Diane!

Best place on the Big Island!

  • 5 of 5

Hale Aloha is a little slice of heaven on the Big Island. Quiet, intimate, cozy. Great snorkeling in the tide pools right outside, whales, turtles, dolphins. Open to the ocean breezes and the sound of the surf, the cottage couldn't be more relaxing. Thank you Mike and Diane for another year's visit to your lovely place. The countdown begins for next year!

Such a beautiful setting...

  • 1 of 5

Such a very disappointing stay. I hope ours was an isolated instance. The property owners and/or property manager need to stay on their game to keep this little gem comfortable for all visitors.
