Typical of the beachfront homes that have made Puako so beloved, Hale Aloha is ideal for a couple who appreciates a sense of place in a perfectly maintained Hawaiian-style beach house. This property is perfect for lounging and enjoying the sunshine and ocean air. Ocean access is adjacent to the Hale Aloha which offers an ideal location to go fishing, snorkeling, diving, surfing, kayaking, and stand-up paddling.
Hale Aloha was built in the 1950's, but was completely renovated without losing its Old Hawaiian charm in 2014. This colorful and exceptionally clean cottage has been expertly renovated and restored with fun and playful decor. Everything is new, cabinets, plantation doors, stainless steel appliances, wood louver windows, bedding, towels, kitchen accessories and utensils, plumbing fixtures, tile in bath and kitchen area, right down to new paint inside and out.
The warm ocean is your swimming pool. Protected and only 2-5 feet deep with a mostly sandy bottom, it is home to green sea turtles and colorful fish. Just beyond the reef-protected lagoon is the best snorkeling, scuba diving and kayaking in Hawaii. In low tide the tidal pools will inspire, and in January through May, you can watch the 45 foot humpback whales play and breach. Morning walks along the two-lane Puako Beach Drive will find you at Puako's famous ancient Hawaiian rock carvings, the largest example of Petroglyphs in the world. We are residents of the Big Island living in Waimea. There is something magical about The Big Island and when you spend some time in Puako you will understand. We have many friends who have homes at Puako and have enjoyed spending time there over the years. We purchased Hale Aloha for a family retreat to be shared with our children, grandchildren and guests. The community retains its laid-back friendly atmosphere. Puako is a short drive to the world class amenities and resorts of the Kohala Coast, but offers a unique Hawaiian vacation. Our goal is to keep our rates reasonable and encourage our guests to return on a regular basis.

Waking up every morning to the amazing tropical view was a dream come true. The hardest thing was trying to decide to drink our Kona coffee from bed or on the deck while taking it all in! The cottage had everything we needed for our retreat. We don't like staying at crowded hotels and swimming and snorkeling on crowded beaches, and this place allowed us to enjoy the best of Hawaii right out our door. I can't wait until I can book our next trip!
This is one of the most magical spots on the planet. The view from the seaside "treehouse" is magical....we were lucky to have a full moon too. The sounds of the wind, the sight of the water, the moon, the sunset,....I will be back asap!
Perfect cozy cabin for two in a stunning location. Wrote a proper review in the guestbook, but the gist of it is that we had an incredible time and can't wait to get back (and we shall be back!). Mahalo nui loa to the owners and property manager for making our dream sojourn in Puako a reality!
This is the place for your if you're after views of the ocean, privacy and don't like crowds. The General Store up the road is a gem, locals are friendly, very little traffic. Cooking facilities are basic but who wants to cook on a holiday! It's just like the pictures, very well ventilated with a lovely breeze off the ocean.
Highly recommended, no negatives. Stayed 5 nights, would have loved more.
We stayed here during part of our honeymoon and it was the perfect place for two. It's very open to the environment, so you can see a beautiful sunrise and sunset almost every day, and feel cool ocean breezes. But it's actually more solid and comfortable than the photos make it appear. The bed is a foam memory mattress, and is particularly luxurious. Appliances are good. You're a short walk away from a large circular tide pool which is warm like a bath, with exotic fish swimming about as well. Great beaches like Hapuna are a short drive away.
Downsides: you will have a few bugs from time to time, and occasionally a gecko on the wall. The geckos are cute, eat the bugs, and stay well out of your way. We've seen the same on the verandas of the finest restaurants in HI. We used a citronella-based bug spray at night, which was adequate to prevent us from getting bitten.
Nothing is perfect, but for us Hale Aloha is about as close as you can get. We have stayed on the oceanfront in Puako many times, mostly in multi-bedroom properties. This time it was just the two of us and Hale Aloha was just what we wanted. The view from the bed says it all. If you are a beginner snorkeler you have what we call “The Swimming Pool”. A perfectly protected shallow pool full of fish and the occasional turtle to snorkel with at high tide. For more experienced snorkelers, there are several ways out to the deep water through the lava depending on tide and waves. Mike the owner always responded very quickly to our questions as we arranged our reservation. We had the pleasure of meeting him our last day in Puako. He is obviously very interested in taking care of his properties and his guests.
This Property is Located on Puako Beach Drive Which Intersects the Bike Portion of the Kona Ironman Race Course Held Each October. This Property is Near Quality Yoga and Pilates Classes and Private Instruction. Puako is an Excellent Location for Morning and Evening Fitness Walks/Runs.
