Oxford Cottage: Brand New Tiny Home

Bedrooms Studio
Space 344 sq ft
Property type cabin
Minimum Stay 2 nights

About the property

Brand New Tiny Home in the Center of Charlottesville

This 344 sq ft cottage is a brand new tiny home concept space, boasting an airy entry, living area, storage landing, stocked kitchenette, bathroom and sleeping loft. Perfect for 1-4 people looking for a relaxed, efficient and comfortable place to stay minutes from UVA Grounds and Historic Downtown Charlottesville.

This cottage is just really cool.

It is a new renovation of what was once a storage shed. It is energy efficient and insulated and feels like a tree house, even though it is on the ground. It is located behind the main house on a .75 acre lot in a family friendly neighborhood. A cute, private setting in the heart of Charlottesville!

On the interior, the ceilings are tall, which makes the space feel much larger than it is. The large windows allow for beautiful natural light and views of the surrounding trees and birds. There is plenty of space for 1-2 people, but 4 adventurous and close people could stay, and be comfortable. The beds and furnishings are comfortable and well appointed and linens and towels are provided.

There is central heating and air and a ceiling fan.

It is a very basic and relaxed space. There is no TV, but there is free Wifi so you could stream away on your phone, iPad, etc. The kitchenette has a microwave, small induction cook top, refrigerator freezer and a toaster oven. There are enough dishes and silverware, mugs, cups and wine glasses for up to 4 people.

One important note about the stairs to the loft, is that they are steep and you will need to take your time going up and down. Use the handrails and watch your noggin at the top. It's easier to come down them backwards, like you would a ladder on a boat. Toddlers and folks with knee or hip issues should not use them. You can also just decide to sleep on the futon in the living area if you do not wish to navigate the stairs. They are sturdy and well built, but they are not a standard stair case.

The hosts are a young family who live on the property and will leave you a key and will leave you alone, unless you need anything. :)

About Aly B. Snider

My name is Aly and I own a house painting business. My husband, Zach is a builder and we are both musicians. We have a 5 year old daughter and a 2 year old son. We love the outdoors, traveling, cooking, reading and living an active lifestyle.

Aly B. Snider purchased this cabin in 2005

Why Aly B. Snider chose Barracks Rugby

This neighborhood is wonderfully located and extremely family friendly. I love the old trees and older homes. I grew up in Charlottesville, and Rugby Hills has always been one of the most desirable locations in the City of Charlottesville to live.

What makes this cabin unique

The location can't be beat. The house and the cottage are charming and welcoming and just plain homey. It is 15 minutes walking distance to the downtown mall and UVA grounds.

Guestbook comments from the owner

I highly recommend Aly's cottage: it is brand-new and beautifully appointed, and is ideally located for visiting UVA or the downtown area. Aly and her husband are also excellent hosts. The cabin is a stylish and livable 400 square feet that belongs in a design magazine for how to make good use of a relatively small space. The kitchen is modern and well-stocked with cook-, glass-, and silverware, including a french press and an induction burner for cooking. The bathroom is also pristine, with cool European-style appliances. The remote controlled heating/cooling unit kept the cottage warm on a historically cold Valentine's Day weekend. With windows on four sides, the cottage was very sunny and pleasant to be in. My girlfriend and I were tempted to move in! Aly and her husband were ideal hosts. They were great about communicating with us before our arrival, and were helpful and responsive when we had questions about an appliance during our stay. They also left us a delicious goodie basket with gourmet coffee and tea. We only stayed a weekend, but I think the amenities and location would make the cottage ideal for longer stays as well. It was only about a 5-8 min drive to the downtown and campus areas.

Weekend Escape to Margaritaville (Charlottesville)

  • 5 of 5

We rented this lovely tiny house for a weekend getaway in Charlottesville which included a visit to the Citizen Burger Bar, attending a UVA men’s lacrosse game at Knöckler stadium and escaping to Margaritaville with Jimmy Buffett & the Coral Reefer Band at John Paul Jones Arena. The house was conveniently located, in a quiet neighborhood, a short drive to the historic downtown mall, the grounds of the University of Virginia, John Paul Jones Arena, lots of local restaurants and the many shopping centers located along route 29 north of Hydraulic Road. The tiny house was clean, comfortable and well maintained. As stated in other reviews, the steps to the loft bed were quite steep; however, that was to be expected in a tiny house design. The loft bed was very comfortable. The kitchen had nice assortment of dishes and kitchen utensils. We had hoped to enjoy the outdoor fire pit and lawn chairs during our stay; however, it was too windy during our two night visit for an outdoor fire. Maybe next time! The only drawback to this tiny house for us was the height of the mirror and towel rack in the bathroom. Given that both my wife and I are vertically challenged, we could not see ourselves in the bathroom mirror and had a hard time reaching the towel rack located over commode. Overall, we loved our stay at the Oxford Cottage and would definitely stay there again.

Fun experience, handy to downtown, clean and well kept!

  • 5 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed our time in the Tiny House. It was well stocked with all you need and comfortable to hang out in. We appreciated the snack bowl, the bathroom supplies, and the cleanliness of the house. If you don't mind staying in the owners backyard and a steep stairway up to the bedroom loft, this is one experience not to be missed!

The house is exactly as described and pictured - our visit was amazing. The interior space was even bigger than I originally thought, and there was ample room for two people. The house was set-up for our arrival. The fall weekend we visited was unexpectedly hot and humid but the house was cool upon our arrival.

Precious house with every amenity!

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay in the tiny house! My young daughter and I used the fire pit to make s'mores our first night there -- a highlight of her stay. It was such a comfortable place to return to after a day of exploring. We used the kitchenette to make pancakes via the induction hot plate. So convenient! The bathroom was a great size -- not what I expected for a tiny house. We loved the snack bowl, the flavored sparkling waters, and the natural soaps. My daughter loved sleeping in the loft and I slept on the futon. We were both very comfortable. We'd love to stay here again on our next trip to Charlottesville!

perfect for two people who want to explore Charlottesville

  • 4 of 5

The pictures and descriptions are perfect for this house. It was quaint and pretty inside. But once we got there it seemed like the perfect place for a couple to have as a base to explore Charlottesville but not for four humans who like to use a vacation house to have some family time and cook some meals together. The bed and futon were comfortable but when it was not sleeping time, things were tight. For breakfast, or any meal we had at the house, as there are only two chairs, we had to take turns, or have the kids sit on the floor to eat.

That being said, although it turned out to not be perfect for us - if you are looking for a tiny house that has charm and amenities (but a tiny tiny footprint and refrigerator that barely fit the bottle of wine we picked up from a local winery) it is pretty, well-maintained and a quick drive to all the history and places you want to go to in Charlottesville (there are no sidewalks in the neighborhood so walking might be tough.) If you choose a vacation house so you have room to hang out together and have more of a house feel, you might consider elsewhere for more than two people - it really is a tiny house!

Quiet urban hideaway

  • 4 of 5

This was my first tiny house experience and I quite enjoyed my two days here. The loft bed and pillows were extremely comfortable. The shower had excellent water pressure and the futon made for a relaxing place to read or watch something on the iPad. I only wish the wifi would've worked upstairs as well. It's a convenient base for exploring Monticello and a myriad of other historic locations in the area, not to mention Charlottesville's lovely old downtown. It was pouring rain when I left however, so my downtown experience will have to wait til next time.
