Overview

About the property

Immediate water frontage with views of Maiden's Cliff and Megunticook Lake.

Situated on exclusive Megunticook Lake, the largest freshwater body in the mid-coast region, the cottage includes 5 bedrooms, a separate kitchen, combined dining room and living room, a separate TV room, and, outside, a large family porch and immediate lakefront access. The cottage enjoys spectacular views of the Camden Hills and the nature preserve, Fernald's Neck.

Fernald's Neck is an easy paddle or swim (with an accompanying boat) across which is available to the public. There are 'jumping rocks' for the stronger swimmers and a gentle area to wade for younger swimmers, as well as a picnic area and many walking trails.

An American Bald Eagle is resident on the property most days and the loons can be seen swimming and heard calling at any hour day or night. Angler's can fish right off the dock or in the many coves nearby.

The cottage is only 3 miles from the charms of the ocean-front town of Camden, with its many wonderful restaurants and shops, as well as a variety of opportunities to experience Penobscot Bay.

Located well-off the main road down a private road along a gently sloping wooded 2 acre lot, all the residents along this side of the lake are multi-generational owners and should you choose to stay here, you will have access to a very special section of the lake.

About Jim & Jennifer Wickenden

The cottage has been in the same family continuously.

Jim & Jennifer Wickenden purchased this house in 1890

Why Jim & Jennifer Wickenden chose Camden

This is one of the first cottages built on Megunticook Lake in the late 1800's by the Babb Family, with 180 degree views of the lake, the Fernald's Neck nature preserve, Maiden Cliff, and the Camden Hills. It has undergone many renovations and updates since then, but still retains the authentic air and charm of a classic Maine lake cottage. The cottage was featured in Conde Nast's Bon Appetit magazine (August 2016 edition).

What makes this house unique

Positioned to have exceptional views of Megunticook Lake and the Camden Hills; excellent boating and deep water swimming off dock.

Beautiful view, classic Maine summer cottage

  • 5 of 5

We stayed for over a week and enjoyed every day of it, rain or shine. This camp is the quintessential classic/rustic Maine cottage. There are no bells and whistles so if you are looking for updated amenities, and renovations, this is not your place. If you're looking for an authentic Maine lake cottage experience, this is your spot! It is kept in it's natural state (and well cared for)-a lovely, old, classic summer cottage-a rare find these days! We had guests come stay with our family throughout the week, and everyone was able to sleep comfortably-the house holds quite a few people, well. It can truly sleep 9-10 people comfortably. The house really had everything we needed and the owners were very responsive to any questions we had. We spent a lot of time on the very nice dock with gorgeous views of the lake and surrounding mountains. Listening to loons and enjoying the bald eagle that came to the tree next to the house, every day, were our favorite things to do from the gorgeous wrap around porch! There is some boat traffic that comes through that area of the lake, and one house next door that has a bit of people traffic, but nothing that effected us too much. The tranquility of the house, and the lake is unlike most places we've been. We would highly recommend Babb Cottage!

Our favorite family vacation rental property ever!

  • 5 of 5

This property was just awesome for our multi-generation family vacation! In fact, we get together every year, and this is our favorite family vacation rental property ever! The "Babb Camp" dates back to the 1880's, and the antiquity and simplicity of the place, combined with the panoramic views of the Camden Hills, Fernald's Neck, and Lake Megunticook, make it feel timeless, completely relaxing, even kind of spiritual. We read on the dock, swam, kayaked, relaxed and visited on the porch. We visited Camden a few times, which offers a whole different experience, with the harbor, opportunities to get on the ocean, and great shops and restaurants. A great, great vacation!

Fantastic Family Vacation

  • 5 of 5

We just came back from the most amazing week at this camp. Nobody wanted to leave!! The house was perfect for our large family and after active days swimming and hiking, we were able to spend time enjoying meals at the farmers table or playing board games in the living room. The porch is as beautiful as it appears in the photos; you can relax and read a book or just sit and look at the water and mountains while listening to the loons call. The dock was ideal for swimming, canoeing, paddle boarding and fishing. We really didn't have to ever leave the camp but when we did, everything was only a short distance away- hiking, dining, rock climbing, farmers market, shopping, groceries etc. What a great spot. We feel so fortunate to have found it.

Family vacation 2015

  • 5 of 5

Fabulous old school antique camp style home from 1890. Capacity for 10 even on the porch and dining area. Best views of lake Megunticook with Maiden cliffs and Mt. Megunticook in the back ground. The dock makes access to your watercrafts a breeze. A bald eagle even roosts right near the camp almost every day. Close to great hiking, shopping in Camden if you need too, but best to relax and enjoy this wonderful spot.
