Want to escape the hustle and bustle of Centro while still being part of it? Relax and unplug at Casa de Pedro May with two bedrooms, two bathrooms, plus a large private pool surrounded by a lush tropical garden and clear blue skies.

Decorated in a mixture of architectural styles, this home blends old antiques with modern conveniences and furnishings to provide all the elements of a comfy stay, including plenty of indoor/outdoor living, aircon in the bedrooms, ceiling fans, internet, TV and much more. The fully screened rear terrace is where you'll spend your days entertaining and relaxing.

Feel like heading out and about? Take a short stroll to Santiago market for some great street food, big band dancing in the square or people watching from one of the many shaded park benches. A little further east and you'll hit Mérida's main square where you can explore the historic house of the Montejo family, the first Spanish Governor, check out the Cathedral and learn all about the fascinating history of the White City.

Head back home and finish the day off with another dip in your pool and an ice-cold cerveza. Zero distractions combined with the magic of Santiago - a perfect recipe for total relaxation!

The house is very popular due to its central location, good value for money and spacious luxury and privacy. It really is 5 star luxury for a great price. All taxes are included. NO CLEANING OR MAINTENANCE CHARGES, unlike some other websites and property management companies that sneakily add them on when you come to book! Your only other cost is for electricity, which is standard practice here, is based on actual usage, and usually amounts to approx $US5 dollars a day per bedroom, with sensible aircon use in the Summer months. In Winter only ceiling fans will be necessary.

This spacious Colonial house dates from 1890 and has been fully refurbished with all modern conveniences, fitted kitchen, a decent sized pool big enough to exercise in, lush tropical gardens and a rooftop lookout tower.

In the popular Santiago district, a vibrant and lively neighbourhood, it's just 12 minutes walk to the Cathedral and main square and only 5 minutes from the colourful local market with its fresh fruit, spices, flowers and authentic Mexican Yucatecan food - don't miss the Panuchos Yucatecos!

Both bedrooms have air conditioning for those summer months, and the high ceilings and interior gardens mean the house has excellent air flow and even in the hottest months, remains nice and cool.

Mérida is proud to call itself the City of Peace and is recognised as one of the safest and friendliest cities in México. If you love Culture, then this is the place for you. Enjoy symphonies, ballets, theatre, fine dining, incredible museums, galleries, modern movie theatres, and so much more in this beautiful 'White City'. There is so much to do here, that you will never get bored - this is just one of many reasons why I live here!

Two of the greatest Mayan pyramids (Chichen Itza and Uxmal) are just an hour's drive away. Cancun and Playa del Carmen are just 3 hours away. The lovely beach of Progreso with its beautiful Malecon is only a 30 minute drive from the house. There are numerous Haciendas to visit and cenotes (underground lakes) to swim in. Be sure to click on VIDEO above to see a short personal video tour which shows you just how special this property is!

MY PERSONAL RESTAURANT FAVOURITES:

Mérida: Amaro´s (in Calle 59), Apoala and Chaya Maya (both in Santa Lucia), and Bollicines in Paseo Montejo.

Progreso: Los Henequenes.

Chelem: La Playa and La Terracita.

About Mark Callum

Retired from the BBC in London, I have now settled here in Mérida. I love the climate and culture of this amazing vibrant city. There is so much to see and do that I never get bored. My life changed for ever after spending just 4 nights in this city as a tourist passing through in 2004.

Mark Callum purchased this house in 2006

Why Mark Callum chose Barrio de Santiago

The house is perfectly located for exploring not just the city itself, but also the surrounding areas, full of Mayan history, such as Uxmal, 45 minutes away and Chichen-Itza, just over an hour away and numerous Haciendas, some restored and some slowly decaying, from the era of the Henequen boom. The french inspired architecture is close by and yet you also have all the latest amenities at Casa De Pedro May, including a fabulous outdoor/indoor living space and a beautiful swimming pool and garden to relax in after an exhilarating day's sightseeing.

What makes this house unique

I love the high ceilings, the original features, and architecture of the French-inspired Colonial houses, that you see all over the Historical Centre of the city. I found this house in one of the most sought-after districts, Santiago - and immediately fell in love with both the architecture and especially the large garden area for relaxing. The pool is totally private, so skinny dipping is no problem and it's a decent size for proper exercising and unwinding and wonderful to swim in at night and gaze up at the twinkling stars of the Yucatán! The house has wonderful air flow, thanks to the original interior gardens and is just 10 minutes walking distance from all the places of interest in Centro.

CASA DE PEDRO MAY is a beautifully restored Colonial house, dating from 1890, with a decent sized swimming pool and situated in the Historic Centre of Mérida, founded by the Spanish in the 16th Century, using the stones from the Pyramid of the existing Ancient Maya city for the Cathedral. Just 10 minutes walk from the centre of town,  in the charming Santiago Park area with its historic buildings, daily market full of fresh produce, character and regular local dancing, as well as its pretty Church. Mérida is the perfect base from which to explore the magnificent nearby Maya pyramids at Chichén-Itzá and Uxmal. Progreso's seafood and sandy beach is only 20 minutes away by road on the Gulf of México. The Winter climate from October to March is around 27C and sunny with 12 hours of light every day.

Beautiful colonial and best value in Santiago.

  • 5 of 5

Mark goes above and beyond every step of the way, and when combined with such a beautiful home there's simply nowhere else to stay.

From the very thoughtful breakfast items to updates on can't miss local events his hospitality and love for this community shine through.

The home itself is huge and the temperature is perfect. The great AC in the bedrooms and the shady areas with plenty of ceiling fans kept home very comfortable and the large, cool pool in the yard was perfect. The clever window and atrium garden screens allowed plenty of cross breeze.

The location is a perfect with only a 10 minute walk to wonderful restaurants but the large parlor in the front of the home eliminates all downtown noises from the ensuring you can relax.

We loved our stay in Merida and at Casa Pedro. Thank you Mark!

Colonial charm meets modern convenience and fantastic hospitality

  • 5 of 5

The airflow, layout, and feeling of space in Mark's place can't be beat. Mark's place maximizes the concept of indoor/outdoor living, yet provides excellent air-con in the bedrooms. Even with the beautiful pics online, the garden and pool area exceeded our expectations and the privacy was truly amazing -- the pool/garden area is your own private oasis. Excellent hot water and pressure, comfortable beds, nice supply of drinking water and top-notch service. Mark is an excellent host, providing breakfast essentials and an overview of Merida and recommended spots upon arrival. His recommendations were spot-on. Thereafter, he is available as little or as much as you like, is super responsive and has a great network. Staying 9 nights, he provided a mid-week cleaning and his cleaning professional was able to wash clothes for us; house and pool were clean and fresh. Thanks for ordering us a cab to the airport. We would book Mark's place again.

Lovely House

  • 5 of 5

This house is lovely. It is very large and you have a lot of space to enjoy. The pool is wonderful and very necessary in Merida! Great way to cool down and relax while taking a break from seeing this wonderful city.

Mark is a great host. Having beverages and breakfast food the first night there was a nice touch and very appreciated.

I would recommend this house and this host to anyone.

Five Star Experience

  • 5 of 5

My wife, daughter, and I had the pleasure of recently staying at Casa Pedro May for a month while visiting Merida. As the owner himself likes to say, and I concur, it was a 5 star experience. From the moment we walked in, the house exceeded our expectations. The entire house and each individual room is far larger than it appears from the website pictures. It’s hard to describe, really, but there is so much space we basically left the front half of the house almost entirely unused. As a family with a young child, it was important to find a home with two bedrooms side-by-side, rather than on separate floors or even in a separate ‘casita’. Of the many rentals we looked at, this was one of the few that had this feature – so if this is a consideration for you, look no further.

The backyard is similarly huge and incredibly beautiful. The pool area is as it appears in the pictures: an oasis. Or, as my father reflected upon seeing a picture of it, a paradise. Completely private and filled with greenery with a decent sized pool. Almost every day had pool-time built in!

The house is in the Santiago neighborhood. There, we found we felt safe and within easy walking distance to everything. Within 1.5 blocks was a laundry. Within 4 blocks was the Santiago Park with a small grocery store, a market, and food vendors. Although not exactly in the heart of the city center (generally around the Central Plaza and along Calle 60 heading north towards Santa Ana Park), all this was found a 15 minute walk or less to the East. Note that there is an exceptionally great Thai restaurant within a seven minute walk called Ave de Paraiso.

Beds were comfortable, house & pool was cleaned weekly, and check-in/check-out was quick and efficient. I would not hesitate returning if and when I go back to Merida.

Owner's Response: Casa de Pedro May is proud of its consistently high standard and continues to strive to offer the best accomodation in the heart of Merida. The house is indeed bigger than it looks on the photos and is a real oasis in this fascinating colonial "White City". Many others have now discovered why it is such a great place to live and retire to. It is very wise to rent first before you buy and we are happy to provide sound free advice to our guests on avoiding some of the pitfalls you can experience buying and renovating here. Above all, our aim is to make sure you can relax and enjoy your stay, with everything you need to hand. Casa de Pedro May is part of your experience, not just a place to sleep! Thank you Alejandro, it was a pleasure to host you and your family.

Casa Pedro Left No Doubts

  • 5 of 5

Loved our stay at Casa Pedro! To begin, the owner was awesome. Helpful, warm personality and had every detail covered! He was available for issues but we had none. Second house is beautiful, comfortable and located in a great spot. Close to the open market and good walking distance for restaurants. Lastly - we would love to come back!

Shhh! Don't tell anyone!

  • 5 of 5

Mark's place is one of those I hesitate to review, for fear that we'll never be able to book it again!

It's a really beautiful home, and it perfectly blends the outdoors into the living space (and it's kept sparkling clean). It had everything we needed for our trip (and we did cook a bit - Mark left us some nice bits so we could have breakfast without a trip to the grocery) and we were so comfortable there.

The pool was fantastic for the three of us to relax, and we got sun with no tan lines in the private garden! Walking into town to some great restaurants was easy. Mark was available whenever we had questions.

My 13 year son gave the best review when he announced that the house was 13/10 stars (and yes, he does understand fractions!). It really was relaxing and perfect. Don't hesitate to book!
