"Our Maine Retreat" offers a warm cabin-like feel, on the Penobscot River.
Our Maine Retreat can be your Maine Retreat - it is a unique three story, 1.5 bath home that sleeps 6. It is constructed of large wooden beams from old factories, local timber, and recycled fixtures providing a comfortable, rustic, cabin-like feel to the home. You will enjoy being away from it all, yet have many amenities near for your convenience. One of the unique interior decor focal points for the downstairs is a large polished tree in the center of the home, with two birches at opposite ends of the support beams. The upstairs has a sitting room with television (no cable), a full bath, and two bedrooms (one with two twin beds, the other sleeps four in three beds).
Heading north, you are only five minutes from the Penobscot Narrows Bridge/Observatory and Historic Fort Knox, located on the Penobscot River. Across the river from the Fort is the small town of Bucksport, with its river front walk and small stores (including a Hanover groceries). Further north you will find Acadia National Park and Bar Harbor (45 minutes away), a "must" place to visit and spend at least a full day. Heading south, only 5 mintues minutes away is the town of Stockton Springs. Where, on Cape Jellison, you can explore Fort Point State Park, with its light house. Another five minutes, to the south, in the quaint town of Searsport is the Penobscot Maritime Museum. Heading south, 10 more minutes, you find yourself in the town of Belfast, with its authentic New England feel, vibrant waterfront, a historic downtown, great eateries, and many local artisan shops. Further south beyond Belfast, is Camden, where the mountains meet the bay.
You will enjoy the quiet and solitude, yet not be far from the many activities the region offers. There is the opportunity for pleasant walks along the Penobscot River, right out the driveway and across the street, in Sandy Point State Park. Near-by you can find great kayaking, inspirational hikes, challenging cycling, educational museums, lots of great shopping, and many places for exploration. Or, you may decide to just go nowhere and relax in the quite. Good bird watching is available right on the property and at numerous other locations, including Sears Island, a few miles to the south. You may even be lucky and have a rare moose sighting. You never know what you may see.
Last year our contractor completed renovations on "Our Maine Retreat", including all new windows, roof, siding, and interior work. It is our goal to make your stay relaxing and comfortable, creating an enjoyable and peaceful environment. It is our hope that you will share our love of Maine and truly experience it while staying at "Our Maine Retreat".

About Jeff Underwood
We have always wanted to have a place in Maine. A place to provide a retreat and a place to appreciate and experience all that Maine has to offer. We are a fitness minded couple that enjoys experiencing nature, the outdoors and the many different activities that come with it. We cross country ski, snowshoe, hike, and kayak. Making trips to explore and experience the small towns and venues which are not heavily traveled is also a passion of ours. We are kind of foodies - discovering small, unobtrusive places to eat and relax, a great way to experience new tastes. All of which we can do right from "Our Maine Retreat," either right out our door or within a short drive. We are excited to share "Our Maine Retreat" with others.

Why Jeff Underwood chose Sandy Point
It is centrally located for many types of activities. "Our Maine Retreat" is within striking distance for day trips to Acadia National Park to the north , Camden to the south, and even the Freeport outlets (home of LL Bean). There are numerous outdoor activities throughout the area, from hikes of various difficulties, to many small Maine towns to explore. There is fishing and excellent birding available nearby. If you're a biker, you will find trips of various lengths and difficulties right from the house or nearby. Mountain biking is also available within the area. If you're adventurou,s you can make a full day trip to the Baxter State Park region and explore "northern Maine" and its wildness. Yet, if you are looking to relax, you need to go no where. "Our Maine Retreat" is directly across the street from Sandy Point State Park, which offers the only beach on the Penobscot River and a great place to explore and walk along the beach or through the woods. You could make a very short drive up the road and explore the Fort Knox State Park and view Maine from the Park's Penobscot Narrows Observatory (one of only two such observatories, in the world). On a clear day you may see all the way up north to Mt. Katahdin. If you prefer reading and quiet, then the solitude of "Our Maine Retreat" will offer the respite you are seeking. If you happen to be attending a wedding at French's Point, we are right down the street, within walking distance.
What makes this House unique
"Our Maine Retreat" is truly unique. It is constructed of lumber and large timbers from old factories. Part of the decor includes three trees as part of the house structure and design. One being the large central focal point in the open first floor. There are two wooden drive wheels, which supported belt drives from old water driven factories, incorporated into two ceiling lights, along with an old street light, as the outside light, from Old Town, Maine. It is an eclectic experience, unlike any others. If you like the outdoors and a natural setting you will find "Our Maine Retreat" relaxing and rewarding. All of this, while providing the needs for a comfortable, quiet visit.

Not Quite What We Expected
Our Maine Retreat is for sure a unique property, located in a lovely spot near a state beach area. My family and I were not prepared by the description in VBRO, though, for the fact that the cabin is a work in progress, not a completed vacation home. There are lots of unfinished areas in the house and that was not mentioned in the listing. I would have preferred that information up front before deciding to book, and it may not have changed my mind about staying there, just my expectations.
The sleeping arrangements are a bit awkward. There is only one double bed, and it is topped with a very low bunkbed, so low in fact that my husband and I had no real option but to sleep in separate beds, not something we would have chosen for a time meant for togetherness. The steps leading upstairs are quite steep, and though our family managed them fine, I would not recommend for anyone with balance or strength issues or for families with small children.
Those things said, if you go in realizing that this home is clearly a product of enthusiastic DIYers and is still in the process of being completed, it is a pleasant place for a retreat. The kitchen is well equipped, there are some very interesting architectural features, lots of effort has gone into using reclaimed/ recycled material, and the area around the home is pleasant and serene.
Perfect getaway house for a group trip
Our Maine Treat was amazing; much larger than it appears in the photos, it comfortably fit our group of 6 for 2 nights. Bedrooms are large and bright, common areas are spacious and comfortable, and full kitchen made group dining easy. It was a stones throw from The Hersey Retreat Cottage where we were attending a wedding, and I would definitely recommend to either wedding guests or groups looking for a fun trip to Stockton Springs!
Like staying in a treehouse!
What a wonderful retreat. We had a delightful time staying at "Our Maine Retreat" while attending a wedding at nearby French's Point. It was a perfect location, because we could walk to and from the wedding venue. We also walked to the little beach nearby. The house is really charming, truly looks like a treehouse on the inside. Everything was clean and well kept, with fluffy towels and all the necessary kitchen fixtures. A great spot from which to explore the mid-Coast area.
Fun house, peaceful setting, interesting area.
The house was spacious, open and interesting, with large living areas, though just two bedrooms. The house contains all the accessories that you would need for a comfortable stay. It is a great 'out-of-town' location.
There are some interesting walks through natural areas in the immediate area, with saltwater swimming also a short walk away.
In the local area, Fort Knox was very interesting. Our kids loved all the tunnels, and nooks and crannies in the historic complex. At high tide there were lots of good, if cool, swimming spots along Penobscot Bay, and a rough, handmade driftwood shack on the beach at Sears Island was also a hit with the kids. Swan Lake is a bit of a drive, but was great for freshwater swimming.
Mobile phone reception is very marginal in the house, I think we only had a few text messages come through, and there is no washing machine in the house, so you may have to visit the laundromat once, or pack accordingly.
The property is good value, and the owner was great with answering questions and providing information.
If we wanted to visit the area in the future we would have no hesitation in staying at the property again.
