Guestbook comments from the manager

The place is an easy $3 water taxi from Bocas town set amongst beautiful native bush. The photos in the listing are exactly what you can expect, right down to the sunsets from the balcony. The kitchen/lounge/dining set up is great for social cooking and the kitchen is well stocked with mostly everything you need. The water was filtered too which was a bonus! We found the hosts really easy to deal with. They even went to the trouble of listing all the local water taxi drivers with their numbers for us which was brilliant. Good WiFi ans laundry facilities. All up, loved our experience. Remember this is an eco house so recycling + conserving power and resources is what it's all about.

We want to remind you that this is a self-sustainable house. The house is provided with a solar panel and batteries. Also, we collect the rain forest water to a deposit. Requires energy to pump it to the kitchen and bathroom. Is mandatory to save energy especially in cloudy days. Weather conditions are beside of human control, if you overuse you will need to wait for the sunshine to have energy! We are going to share with you some tips that we have been learning living here by email :)

Lovely ecohouse overlooking the water

  • 5 of 5

This is a great house with a wonderful front porch with a palm-tree lined view of the water. It was roomy for my family of 4, and could easily have housed a couple more. I had originally been looking at the Mango House (also run by Dayana and Melena) below, but it wasn't available. I'm actually glad we rented this one, because I think it may have been a little quieter a little further up the hill and not right over the water during the Easter festivities ( which were actually only noticeable one night, the Saturday before Easter) and during a couple of windy nights with heavy rain while we were there. The temperature was comfortable for sleeping inside, even a little cool, with a nice little breeze. Dayana was very helpful when we arrived, showing us some of the cool things around the house--pineapples, mango trees, etc. and showing us the amenities of the house, as well as suggestions for getting boat taxis, restaurants, etc. We also enjoyed the coconut she left for us. The local phone provided was useful. The boat taxi dock (cement dock/Punta Rica) is really close, just below and to the side of the house. I hadn't realized how close it was from reading other reviews. We had fun walking around the point and waving down boat taxis from Old Bank with the white flag. Only $1 pp to Old Bank from there, versus $2 from cement dock. If I go back, I'd rent the same house again.

A little piece of paradise

  • 5 of 5

The Red Ginger home was one of 3 places we stayed while visiting Bocas Del Toro. We just loved our time here. It was absolutely beautiful nestled in the jungle yet right on the beach. The home had everything you needed.

Incredible Location--Very private and relaxing

  • 4 of 5

The property overlooked the water and has a sunset view--we spent a lot of time on the patio enjoying the view. Island is only accessible by boat. There are no roads on Bastimentos Island. You are shuttled around in water-taxis by some colorful friendly locals. We had a blast as a family. There are 3 bedrooms and a nice kitchen. Except for Wifi the house is off the grid--solar panels fuel the batteries and rain water runs into a holding tank. The only drawback if you can call it that is that the main town a few miles away has some big speakers and music, DJs, etc. can be heard until the sun comes up so bring you ear plugs. Very relaxing otherwise. I would recommend this home for a couple(s) or family with older kids as it sits high on a steep hill.

Owner's Response: Thanks for your review. We are glad that you had a great time at the house. It was a shame that you came during the Eastern holidays. Laud music is a cultural fact in Panama!

Vacation in Basti-Wonderful Hosts!

  • 4 of 5

My mom and I (late 40s and late 20's) stayed in the Eco-house for a week and it was great! Unfortunately we went during rainy season and mother nature controls the weather. The house is large (looks like the pictures) and can easily fit 6 people, has all the amenities you might need and if something isn't working Dayana and Malena are happy to assist. We did have several encounters with bugs (could be more due to the rainy weather but you are also in the jungle ). Next time I would bring more bug spray and maybe request a bug net for each of the beds (only one is provided). The house is located on the water but it is shallow for a long ways past the dock, we were told snorkeling is great in the area, but due to the rain we weren't able to experience it. It is difficult to get anywhere by foot, we did venture out on a very rainy day and found it to be extremely muddy and slippery walk to the nearby hotel (10 minute walk to Eclypse de Mar) for dinner. We did not attempt the walk to the small town of Old Bank due to the rains, but it was only a $1.00 boat ride to get a few things at the market. The house does provide a cell phone, which is great-you can call for a boat taxi pickup, make reservations or call Dayana and Malena-as they are close by.

Dayana and Malena were WONDERFUL hosts! They were waiting for us on the dock when we arrived and showed us everything we needed to know about the house. They were happy to answer any of our questions and even helped us arrange a private tour to salt creek and snorkeling. They hadn't done the trip either and we were so happy they decided to join us! Gernaro was a local guide who took us on a wonderful boat trip through the mangroves, to "sloth island", salt creek, azul paradise, and a few snorkel spots. We all had such a great day! This house is secluded and can be difficult to know how to get around, but you will not be disappointed with Dayana and Malena and their ability to assist with anything!

Things to do: Red Frog Beach, Bike ride to Playa Bluff, Bocas Brewery, Raw Fusion for Happy Hour

Walk up to Up the Hill in Old Bank-good coffee

If you don't feel like venturing far-walk to Eclypse de Mar and have lunch or dinner, it is a bit more expensive than other places in Bocas but worth the convenience.

Bocas town is $5 per person one way- it can add up so keep this in mind, but if you enjoy peace and quiet then Bastimentos is the place for you!

Family-Stay at Bastimentos

  • 4 of 5

Nice huge house with an amazing terasse. The house was well equipped and we had everything we needed for our 4 days. The only thing that did not work propperly was the waterpression, it was sometimes hard to take a shower. The caretakers were very friendly and helped us with all our questions. The view and situation of the house is a dream. PURA VIDA!

Owner's Response: We are looking forward to receive you again. The water pressure works pretty well. Its gets lower only when there is a very high demand from the 3 showers + the kitchen. Thanks for your review!

Trash is a big issue in the islands (and all around the world), the best way to help is always to reduce, choosing natural beverages or fresh tomatoes for a tomato can are great ideas to minimize our footprint! We kindly ask you to help us recycle and organize the trash as follow:
Organic always feeding the jungle: rest of food, fruits, veggies, eggs shells etc
Separate cans, glass&plastic bottles, paper

Here is some tips on how to save water:

1. Use less water when showering. An average shower goes through 5 or more gallons of water per minute. You can step in and rinse off for just a minute if you didn't sweat during the day. Off course is not relaxing but this circumstances require it.

2. Re-Wear Clothes. Wash your clothes when they are dirty instead of tossing them in the laundry bag after wearing them for a couple of hours.

3. Fill a glass and turn Off the Tap While Brushing. Most of us shut off the water at home when we are brushing our teeth, but good habits sometimes fall by the wayside when we are travelling.

4. Reuse Cooking Water. When you’re cooking, there’s no reason you need a pot of water for your potatoes and another one for your pasta. Instead, cook the potatoes first and reuse the water for the pasta.

5. Wash your dishes all together. Fill the sink with warm soapy water. Use that water for as many dishes as you can, as long as it's still warm and sudsy. Let them soak for a few minutes to loosen up the gunk.

You will not only save water but energy also. Make a difference. Take steps to set up new habits and actively work to save water!
