Golden Retreat named for our two retrievers, is a new and unique to Lake Gaston, this farmhouse inspired custom designed cottage overlooks the main lake while sitting at the edge of a private cove offering the serenity of calm water but with the stunning views of the main lake.
In the private foliage of an expansive 4 acre lot, you’ll enjoy both indoor and outdoor living taken to new heights. Starting at the lake level, you’ll walk out to a two story custom designed boat house featuring a covered outdoor living room with fans, summer classic sofas, swings rockers, dining table all directly sitting over the lake. The second floor of the boat house features a “jump zone” to entertain the kids for hours and luxury loungers for sunning. You’ll walk up through plush grass to an outdoor bathroom and showers making lake life easier. Gather in the evening fireside by the trees in the Adirondack chairs around the classic fire pit for smores, coco, and hot toddys.
Enter the home from the lake level to an immaculate basement with comfy sofa and chairs, a 55” HD entertainment system, a rustic a bar, pool hall, and game table. Allow the children to stay in the bunk room featuring six custom built in beds each with their own lighting and charging stations. Kids thrill to stay in this room.
Continue up to the main level for breathtaking view on top rustic reclaimed hardwood floors and beams. With an open floor plan, you’ll enjoy a gourmet kitchen designed by the chef himself. The bar counter seats 5 allowing guest to watch as the cooks prep and opens to an adjacent outdoor kitchen featuring state of the art new grill. The living room extending from the kitchen features a rustic stone fireplace and beautiful furnishings that then extend to covered porch featuring rockers, lanterns, fans, and views like no other. The dining room adjacent to the living room is planked by old barn beams, seats 10 around the farm table, and also opens up to an outdoor dining room under a pergola accented with hanging lanterns that twinkle between the starts and neighboring trees. The main floor also features a spacious master ground level suite and bathroom as well as a powder room for guest.
The top floor of the cottage features a master suite with king size sleigh bed, a spa like bathroom with a soaking tub and a private outdoor sleeping porch that allows you to swing or sleep with a treehouse affect. The other three bedrooms with their plush bedding, window seats/ pillows, chandeliers, and beautiful views and not be missed.
The location could not be more ideal. In Roanoke Reserve just off the main lake, you are almost directly across the lake from Morning Star Marina where you can rent boats as well as dine and experience live musical entertainment and family fun. And lot itself gives you private cove swimming, fishing and living with main lake views and boating opportunities.
Our home comes with lots of water toys like the Floating Matt (holding up to 12 on top of the water), paddle boards, fishing poles and other water recreations. And the roaming surrounding woods make for incredible walking, running and exploring an adventures for dogs, kids and adults alike.

About John Griffin
We are a family of five from San Francisco and now living in Raleigh NC. We work hard and longed for a place to relax and unwind with our children taking us away from the rigor of daily life. Working in both the creative industry and the real estate industry we designed an original home that captures our passion for living and entertaining.
John Griffin purchased this House in 2015
Why John Griffin chose Roanoke
We built this dream home as a way to create memories with our three kids whom are growing up faster than we ever imagined. The lot was originally used for loading crops onto Eaton's Ferry for trading up North. The original wagon wheel marks on our property inspired us to build a farmhouse. With a hint of Nantucket but the charm of the deep south, we think we've created something special and would love to share it with those who value truly special experiences.

Gorgeous luxury home; beautiful location!
Our family had a wonderful time at John Griffin's Lake Gaston home! Gorgeous decorations and many amenities--even an outside herb garden! Lots of fun for the whole family!
Gorgeous home on a quiet cove with a spacious boat house. Beautifully designed
Large and beautifully designed home that transitions to a large boat house in a quiet cove. Great for boating, paddle boarding, kayaking, swimming and fishing. Large grilling station. Fire pit that overlooks the lake. Truly a magical place!
This house was absolutely amazing!
So much to do without having to leave the property. Fishing, swimming, paddle boarding, floating mat and we even rented a boat for 4 days! The house is equipped with everything you need plus its beautiful inside and out! The covered dock with couches and chairs is where we spent most of our day..and when we wanted sun, we went upstairs to the rooftop deck with over-sized lounge chairs!
A great place for "Cousins Week"!
Beautiful home, perfect for families/ kids. We rented a boat and jet skis; a definite must for lake activities. Home was well stocked, but I would recommend bringing groceries. There is a small food lion 10 minutes away, but very little in the way of pharmacies, grocery stores etc. We enjoyed cooking family style most nights, but also boated to The Pointe for dinner one night. Overall, a great week!
The property and location is absolutely gorgeous!
We have vacationed on Lake Gaston since 2010 and this home is without question the most beautiful! Truly a memorable experience for the whole family!
First class luxury and comfort - second to none!
The home is beautiful with a kitchen fit for a professional chef and the outdoor dining al fresco is especially nice. The bed linens that oh-so-comfy. The views are gorgeous, the boat house is a perfect retreat for lazing away the day and the cove is fantastic for swimming. The owners have thought of everything... Can't wait to go back.
