We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in your home. As you know from our conversations and meeting us, my wife is a quadriplegic as a result of an accident almost 4 years ago. Since that time, we have spent a large amount of time travelling on vacation and business throughout the country and internationally.
Prior to staying at your home in April this year, we always stayed in hotels that were able to provide for our special needs. However, this year we decided to bring together some of my wife's family that resides in California and wanted to stay in a private home if we could find one that could accommodate us.
I searched all over for the "right" house and then came across your home. At first it seemed too good to be true. You may remember we had many discussions regarding your home as I wanted it to be perfect for our trip. Well, Cliff, it was.
As you may remember we had some concerns about whether we could stay in the master bedroom or not, because of a two inch lip leading into the shower. Well, there was no problem.
We also thought there might be a problem in getting onto the three oceanfront decks. You built a portable wooden ramp that allowed my wife and her 350-pound wheelchair to go on the decks whenever she wanted.
Cliff, I have given considerable thought as to whether there is anything that could be done to your home to make it better for accessibility. The short answer is - no.
Your home is wonderfully built to accommodate virtually everyone in an excellent manner. It worked for us and I am certain it can work for anyone.
We look forward to renting your home again next year - this time for a longer period.
New York, NY
We just arrived home from an incredible week spent at this beautiful property. Our original plans were to have a Hawaiian vacation, but we were traveling with my elderly parents and had concerns with transportation. La Jolla seemed like the next best option, and we began weeks of searching the web for a place on the beach. After reading the reviews on this home, and seeing it’s proximity to the beach we decided to book it.
From the first phone call from the owner Cliff I knew we made the right decision. He was so helpful and answered my many questions leaving no doubt this would be the best place for our family. Our group consisted of my husband, our two adult children, my brother and my parents. Everyone had his or her own bedroom and connecting bathroom.
The rooms were all much larger than we expected, especially the main living area. This entrance level floor consists of the kitchen and dining room combination plus 2 couches. We spent most of the daytime in this room or actually on the gorgeous connecting deck overlooking the beach and ocean. The deck is so close to the sand we felt like we were actually on the beach with the exception of being able to recline on super comfortable chairs. We also enjoyed being able to easily access the beach, including my 84 year-old parents.
I am kind of a neat freak and this home was extremely clean and organized. I felt right at home. The appliances were all top quality, and we enjoyed being able to prepare meals and dine al fresco. If we did venture out for a meal it was an easy walk to many wonderful restaurants. Cliff has a house notebook with all the information regarding the house including many recommends for favorite restaurants. I can’t say enough on how much we enjoyed our time in this beautiful home! We would love to come back again!
We stayed in this home back in April for a mini-family reunion. The house is even better in person than it is in the pictures and description. The home is set up extremely well for multiple or large families and is very well-appointed with everything you would need for a perfect beach vacation, including beach gear, a great kitchen with many supplies, every appliance and amenity you can think of, an amazing home entertainment system, and central location to walk to retail and restaurants. The beach is something out of a dream and the views from all three decks cannot be adequately described in words.
The owner is extremely helpful and goes to great lengths in the tour and a manual he has prepared to answer every question that could ever be raised. He is also a good source of local information and provides spot on recommendations and reviews of local sites and restaurants.
We stayed for a week and no one was ready to leave. This is an amazing house in an amazing location. We have zero complaints or regrets and we cannot imagine vacationing in the San Diego area again unless we can stay in this house. There are not enough stars to properly rank this property and its owner. Hats off to cliff for giving us the best family vacation ever.
My wife and I, our 2 small children (8 and 2) and their grandparents luxuriated for a week in this house in October of 2012. I spent weeks searching the internet for just the right house to rent for our visit and am thrilled that we were lucky to secure this house. This home is truly remarkable. It was immaculate and well kept. As per other reviews, no cost was spared to outfit this house - from the extraordinary entertainment system, georgeous kitchen, elevator... The house offered something for everyone. My wife says she got some of the best sleep she has ever gotten as she was lulled to sleep by the Pacific's waves. My children loved the elevator and being right on the beach. (I will add that it is very secure and the kids could not get to the beach without us letting them). For myself, I can't think of a better cooking experience than using the fully outfitted chef's kitchen while looking out at sunset. My parents enjoyed spending time with all of us but really enjoyed going up to their "penthouse" for rest and relaxation!
The location is ideal. Not just being on the beach, but being a short walk from all sorts of sights.
I'd also like to say that this is the first time that I have rented a home over the internet and was quite wary, given some of the horror stories you see online. I can say that Cliff and his wife were extraordinarily helpful with the booking as well as meeting us at the home and showing us around. We'd all give the experience 6 stars if we could.
Our family of four stayed at this wonderful home during Presidents Day week. While a five bedroom home is over doing it for a mom, dad and two young kids, the place never felt too big. Our main objective was to be on the beach and within walking distance to the main La Jolla attractions. I'm certain no other rental residence matches that criteria as well or at such an outstanding level. This is a beautiful home that allows you to enjoy the ocean and beach views from any room in the house. The kids had a ball playing on the beach, watching dauphins, surfers, exploring the tide pools, etc. The kitchen is very well equipped, beds are comfortable, all is very tastefully decorated. Home entertainment system is very cool. The owners are very friendly and helpful, offering great tips on dinning out, etc. If you are not traveling on a lean budget you must consider this residence. We certainly intend on a return trip.
We just completed our stay at this fantastic, newly built house on the beach. There were eight of us staying at the house-- two families. We also had another family visit for one or two afternoons. The house comfortably held all 11 of us (5 adults, 6 kids). We had a great time.
I'll review the place in three sections:
1) THE HOUSE -- the photos on VRBO do not do it justice. It is gorgeous, with lots of thoughtful little architectural features. Everything is very high end-- granite, fixtures, appliances, sound system / entertainment system, motorized shades and windows, etc. The layout is perfect as the kitchen / dining level is very open and large and opens onto the main deck. This is where we spent most of our indoor (awake) time. It easily held all 11 of us without feeling cramped. There are three decks (one on each level) each overlooking the beach and ocean. There are two suites that serve as "master" BRs and three other BRs that are good for kids in that they don't have ocean views. All BRs have bathrooms, which are all high end. There is a very large media room with a great entertainment system. The surround sound is movie-theater like and made watching movies every night very enjoyable.
2) THE LOCATION -- the house is literally right on the beach. Open the windows and hear and smell the ocean. Beach Barber is just south of the village, maybe a five minute walk to the closest coffee joint and 15 to the heart of the village. Also, it is not nearly as crowded as some of the other LJ beaches as it feels like more of a "locals" beach.
3) THE OWNERS -- We had a great interaction with the owners. I asked to visit the house before we rented it back in April (for a July stay) as I was in San Diego on business at the time. Cliff went out of his way to meet me there and has been very accommodating and helpful ever since. We even had one small problem at the house during our stay and he came over within a few hours to fix it. The place is clean, neat and very well maintained.
Our two families concluded that we made a great decision by renting this house. It was more money than we originally budgeted, but being right on the beach and going to sleep every night to the sounds of the waves was very relaxing. In addition, it was convenient and comforting with our kids to be right on the beach and to simply walk in / out whenever someone needed something or wanted to get out of the sun.
The neighborhood is almost all multi-million dollar single family homes. Mitt Romney's La Jolla home is about 8 doors south. It's a five minute walk to the neighborhood Ferrari and Lamborghini dealerships. Yet there are restaurants, shops, and art galleries everywhere to fit most budgets and tastes. The people are friendly, there's lots to do, and beautiful places to do it. Next door is the beautiful White Sands retirement home (http://www.bewhitesands.org/).
