Welcome to Pot Pie House! Immerse yourself in Eastern Shore culture in this newly renovated historic cottage located in the quaint waterfront village of Wittman, just minutes from St. Michaels.
According to locals, this charming nineteenth century home was a transplant from Hooper’s Island in Dorchester County, Maryland. It did not come to be known as “Pot Pie House” until it was later relocated to Wittman. As the story goes, Pot Pie Road was named for the oyster pot pies that the local women would make for traveling pastors. The house soon became a landmark for passing wayfarers and weary travelers in need of direction or a home-cooked meal.
The home is situated in a small, secluded neighborhood off Harris Creek. Sip your morning coffee on the front porch and savor the slow-paced Eastern Shore way of life or take a stroll down to the water’s edge to enjoy the peace and serenity offered by the calm backwaters of the Bay. Don’t forget to grab your binoculars—eagles, heron, and several waterfowl species make their home in the area, too.
Newly renovated in 2015, Pot Pie House features 3 bedrooms and 1 ½ bathrooms making it an ideal choice for a large family or even for two families to share. Two bedrooms are furnished with queen beds, and the third with twin bunk beds. There is also a full-size sofa bed in the living room, which sleeps an additional two guests.
The kitchen is fully equipped (there is also a gas and charcoal grill outside) so you can cook at home. Or, if you prefer, you can sample one of the area’s many great restaurants specializing in everything from barbeque to pizza and, of course, locally sourced, fresh seafood.
If you have your own boat, bring it along! We have two boat slips available for your use (at a nominal additional charge) located at a small public pier within walking distance of the house. Don’t have a boat? Borrow one of our two kayaks to explore Harris Creek and some of the other surrounding waterways. The many quiet creeks that branch off the Chesapeake Bay are ideal for fishing, crabbing, bird watching, water skiing, and tubing. If you want to see more of the Chesapeake Bay, we can recommend several fishing charters or sightseeing tours.
The Eastern Shore terrain is flat and perfect for biking or walking. We’ve provided two bikes, but don’t hesitate to bring your own! Enjoy a leisurely bike ride down rural roads. St. Michaels is only 7 miles in one direction, and neighboring Tilghman Island is only 8 in the other. If you have kids, the Wittman Community Park includes a playground, basketball court and baseball diamond and is a short, 2-minute walk from the house.
Rain put a damper on your plans? Take a quick ride up the road to enjoy the many shops, restaurants, and bars St. Michaels has to offer or visit the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum to learn about Maryland’s oyster and crabbing industries. For the beer and wine connoisseurs, St. Michaels also boasts a brewery, a winery, and even a distillery.
If you are not from the area, you may also opt to take a day trip to Annapolis, Washington D.C., Baltimore, or one of the sandy beaches of Maryland or Delaware—all within 2-3 hours of Wittman.
We hope you choose Pot Pie House to enjoy your Eastern Shore vacation!
