In the last ten years we have enjoyed being hosts to Watercolour Cottage Santa Cruz 87502 next door to us.We have decided to make our home available with twice the footprint and 5 outdoor patios a bedroom suite with a gas fireplace and view to outside garden. Each room has a unique, tranquil sense of wonder. We are excited to share yet another distinct experience in this creative paradise we call home.
We have lived on this property for over thirty five years and continually worked at creating a living work of art to immerse our daily lives in.
Glenn grew up in San Francisco and Denise grew up in Los Angeles.
Denise Carter purchased this house in 1979
This property is ideally located a short stroll from the beach near the University, downtown and North Coast.
The casual beach lifestyle and friendly culture was the main draw to want to build an artistic life here in Santa Cruz.
Our talents and commitment to our art has produced this wonderfully relaxed and sophisticated home.
Regarding privacy, comfort, visually stunning moments and tranquility as the necessary components for an artistic life, we have put heart and soul into making the experience here uncompromised and of an unparalleled original work in progress.
Color overall is the unifying harmony that puts the magic in place.
Pattern and texture create the visual momentum that draws the gaze from one space to the next bringing together the many diverse surfaces, objects and furnishings into a completed original work of art.
This home and patios need to be experienced to gain the real sense of beauty and wonder that is the true artist experience of A Bird Song Cottage!!!
My husband, daughter, her fiancé and I stayed here for two nights and enjoyed it so much. We have stayed at their other rental house next door (watercolor cottage) several times and were very happy. It was all booked up for the dates we needed and we noticed that Bird Song was available. I thought Watercolor was lovely, but you have to see this one. Everything about it stunning. It has a whimsical, enchanting fairy book feel. Denise and Glenn have done a wonderful job on their home. I honestly think that they thought of everything to make their guests comfortable. The garden is so wonderful and pretty. We will never stay anywhere else when visiting Santa Cruz. Stay here, you won't be disappointed.
My wife and enjoyed four days in the Bird Song Cottage. The house photographs well, but the photos can't capture the tranquility and peacefulness of the home. It's hard to describe the attention to detail and creative energy that went into creating this unique vacation home.
We found details in both the home and garden on the last day that had gone unnoticed the prior days. The gardens are inviting, with numerous seating areas scattered on all sides of the house, perfect for breakfast outdoors, a morning pastry from the French Bakery, an afternoon glass of wine or dinner outside. The house is warm and inviting, like slipping into your favorite comfortable pair of shoes from the time you enter the home. Unlike many homes we have rented, the kitchen is well appointed and set up for cooking. Despite the plethora of restaurants in the area, we bought local fish or crabs two nights and cooked in to enjoy the home and gardens.
The house is very private on a quiet street in a residential neighborhood, with off street parking. The ocean and the walking path along West Cliff Drive is an easy 4 or 5 minute walk from the house. Downtown is 5 minutes away. Grocery stores, bakeries and tasting rooms are an easy drive or 10 minute walk. Day trips to redwood hiking, ocean hiking or wineries are just a short drive north. Glenn and Denise are wonderful hosts that were very attentive to any and all questions and inquiries.
My husband and I wanted a place where we could host our Delaware and Santa Cruz family for Thanksgiving. Birdsong Corrage fulfilled all of our needs and exceeded our expectations. We loved the artistry displayed in and outside the cottage and enjoyed walking to the Beach and watching the dogs at the dog park. Our Santa Cruz family loved it also and Came over often to experience the relaxing atmosphere. The hummingbirds in the yard were fun to watch to. We are hoping to rent again sometime..
My husband and I enjoyed a relaxing inspiring week at Birdsong Cottage. Inspiring for being surrounded by beautiful art, whimsical collections, gardens and unique interior design. The cottage was pristine, comfortable, the complete kitchen more than meeting our needs. Fun colorful dishes are provided. Everything was very clean and in perfect condition. Very nice beach chairs are supplied.
Glenn is a master painter, Denise a master gardener, 2 very talented individuals whose artistry shows everywhere you look. The outdoor space was incredible, several very comfortable pretty garden areas to chat or relax. We found ourselves spending time just looking at the unique collections inside and out, design ideas, some not discovered for days. We didn’t find the front garden till a day into our visit. This is a very charming unique home. We could easily have stayed much longer.
You can walk a short distance to the West Cliff paved walkway along the ocean, it’s a 20 minute walk to some restaurants in the West End, or 20 minutes in other direction for the Boardwalk. Parking at the cottage and driving was easy, uber readily available. The cottage is in a quiet nice neighborhood. It is a place we felt comfortable in and did not want to leave.
I have my own vacation rentals so I know how much work goes into providing a nice experience for my guests. This rental, however, goes above and beyond. Glen and Denise not only want to provide a place for you to stay, they want you to have an experience. They have painstakingly made every nook and cranny something to look at, admire and appreciate. They have impeccable taste and are true artists and I'm so glad we discovered this gem for my birthday weekend. We will definitely come back to stay here again, so romantic, so beautiful...thank you!
My wife found A Bird Song Cottage while searching for places to stay while we vacationed in Santa Cruz over the summer. We coordinated with the owners for our stay, which was fast-approaching, and found them responsive and professional. When we arrived we couldn't have been more pleased with the location, proximate to the coast and wharf, and the cottage.
The Bird Song Cottage provided plenty of room for our family of four including two adults, one teen and one pre-teen. We never longed for an amenity and found the cottage well-provisioned for our stay in terms of things we would use including pots, pans, cups, blenders, etc.
We could not have been happier with our stay and really appreciated the nearly two weeks we were able to enjoy A Bird Song Cottage. When we return to Santa Cruz this will be the first place we will look to stay.
A mellow 5 minute stroll to the West Cliff Promenade with a three mile walking wide paved path along the cliffs with sweeping world class views of the bay and the Monterey peninsula and numerous access points to the beaches and the many surfing spots along West Cliff Dr.
An 8 minute walk to the Lighthouse Point, Steamers Lane world famous surf spot and the Surfing Museum.
A 15 minute walk to the Municipal Pier with many restaurants and events, the Monterrey Bay Exploration Center ( free admission), the Boardwalk Amusement Park and Casino.
A ten minute drive to Downtown Santa Cruz where numerous restaurants, shops, cafes, theaters, museum and nightclubs abound.
During the winter the Santa Cruz Warriors Championship Basketball D League is a locals favorite.
In the opposite direction to the west just one mile are Westside breweries, wineries, bakeries, restaurants and grocery shopping.
The north coast it is a five minute drive to access the undeveloped areas of Santa Cruz with numerous hiking and biking trails, pristine beaches and the real natural Santa Cruz Experience. During the winter and spring you can catch a view of migrating whales from the cliffs along Highway 1 and stop in at the bakery and cafe in the rustic coastal town of Davenport an old whaling town about 15 minutes from here.
To the east a 20 minute drive will put you at Henry Cowell Redwood State Park with a wonderful visitor center and walks and hikes for any age through the old growth redwoods.
Next door is Roaring Camp Antique Railroad which operates train rides in the mountains and down through the San Lorenzo River Valley to the Boardwalk on the coast all summer and during the winter holidays .
The nearby Mystery Spot is a must and has been for generations.
Further up the road is Big Basin State Park with even grander redwood groves and miles of hiking and camping.
There are the towns of Felton, Ben Lommond and Boulder Creek along the way that have there own charm and amenities.
