About Heather Douglas

We have lived in this little coastal town for 13 years now and are excited at the opportunity to share it with others. I am a nurse at our small community hospital and my husband is a wildlife biologist. We have 2 kids and a dog (Kona) who we named our cabin after. Our family enjoys exploring the coast, hiking, biking, as well as attending many of our unique community events. The world's largest salmon barbecue in July and the Ugly dog contest during Labor Day weekend are some of our favorites.

Heather Douglas purchased this cabin in 2014

Why Heather Douglas chose North Coast

We fell in love with this property because of the close proximity to town, but "in the middle of nowhere" feel it has. It is set at the end of the road and feels like you are in a forest. It has the feel of a campground but offers the comforts of home just inside the door. Our kids have loved exploring the property and beyond in Jackson Demonstration State Park since we purchased it. In the fall we collected baskets of wild mushrooms and in the spring discovered wildflowers popping up everywhere.

My dog and I spent a very nice weekend at the Kona Cabin! It was a very clean and cozy place. They have everything you can possibly need while on vacation. We'll definitely be back! The owners are wonderful as well and the quickly respond to any questions or concerns. This is a must visit when staying in Fort Bragg!

Secluded comfort, but close to everything.

We arrived late, so we did not appreciate the setting for this lovely little cabin in the big redwoods. It is so pretty, with all the comfort items you want, but the cabin features that just add the charm you are looking for. We loved the wood pellet stove, so easy to use and kept us comfortable. The modern bathroom was a treat, warm showers every night after walking the beach or woods. We did not use the kitchen as much as we probably should have, because Harvest Market is less than a mile away and has wonderful take out food. But, if you want to cook all your meals in, the kitchen is well stocked with cookware, bakeware, utensils and storage containers.

When we woke up the morning after arriving, we were greeted by a gorgeous forest view from every window. It was raining, but the sounds and smells were just invigorating and a welcome respite from city and heat. We enjoyed walking the property as soon as the rain quit, and posed for pictures under the huge redwood right outside the front door.

The location is so well screened by trees, you might feel you are far from town, but you are not. It was a five minute drive to get groceries, tour the SeaGlass museum or get a drive though espresso at the A-frame. We met wonderful store owners in shops downtown and brought home unique gifts for our kids and grandkids. Needless to say, the beach was the showstopper of this trip. Glass beach is not what it once was, but the views are gorgeous. McKerriker Park was another favorite spot. There is no charge, so you can go different times of day for great photos.

We especially enjoyed Eggheads restaurant for incredible omelets, big enough to share. We also went to Casa Del Mar for great organic food and the best huckleberry crisp with ice cream ( we shared it and still had enough huckleberries to take home for pancakes the next morning). Frankies in Mendocino was also worth the short drive. Great soups and homemade ice cream in a bunch of flavors. My husband has food allergies that are sometimes very limiting. We found that all of the restaurants we visited were able to accommodate his needs and still offer wonderful fare.

Thank you, Heather for your thoughtful preparations for your guests. The cabin was spotless and comfortable and the wine and fruit a special treat. We hope to return next year and have definitely recommended Kona Cabin to our friends that want a relaxing getaway in a beautiful setting.

Beautiful Area

  • 5 of 5

We stayed 8 nights and enjoyed every day (and night.) Literally less than five minute drive from Pomo cliffs and beaches which is one of our favorite walks with our two small dogs. Don't like to drive; how about walking out the door and into Jackson Demonstration State Park with its many miles of trails. Almost like we had transplanted our house to a forest on the coast. Very hard to beat.

I have to say though, the bed was pretty soft for me, I would have liked a firmer one. Still, a five star house in a five star location. That's pretty hard to beat - any where.

Cozy modern cabin in Doggie paradise

  • 5 of 5

Cozy cabin on the very edge of the redwood forest. Modern amenities, smart tv, stove/oven, microwave, all worked great. It's about a 5 min drive from downtown Fort Bragg. I have honestly never seen my dog as excited as he was the whole 5 days we were there. I am already looking to see when I can go back.

Car: necessary

Visit the new coastal walking trail at Glass beach with awesome views of the rocky coastline or explore the beach for treasures discarded years ago now transformed into beautiful sea glass. Learn about the history of the prior logging town which used what is now Glass Beach as the town dump. For more history you can ride the historic Skunk Train which makes trips inland among the redwoods and back. A short drive to Anderson Valley offers a friendly wine tasting region with award winning boutique wineries that specialize in pinot noir and Gewürztraminer.
