About Melvin Camden
I am a supervisor at C.W. Barger & Son, an aggregate limestone quarry in nearby Lexington. As a result of buying this house, the Phyllis and I eventually bought the Hilltop Market across the street, which adds so much convenience to be able to shop right across the street for groceries, fresh meat, beer and wine, fishing supplies, etc. We have lived in the area all our lives, been married over 30 years, and look forward to making your vacation the best possible!
Melvin Camden purchased this Chateau / Country House in 2011
Why Melvin Camden chose Buchanan
Loved the house and the location, its amenities, the window seat in an upstairs bedroom, its possibilities of renovations, the yard, the view, the friendly neighbors--everything!
What makes this Chateau / Country House unique
Comfort, comfort, comfort! So many things to enjoy in the area indoors and out. History, adventure, and culture all close by! The views are spectacular!

We thought that the house was very nice with a beautiful view. Our stay was great, and we would love to stay there again!
Home away from home.
This is my second stay there. I'm originally from Buchanan and most of my family still lives there. My children and grandchildren love coming to Buchanan whether it is summer or winter. Love that most of us can stay there. Have meals together and just enjoy each other. My complaint are the beds. Not very comfortable. I thought mattress toppers where going to be put on the beds, but they were not. Maybe this can be done soon. My daughter-in-law is planning a trip to stay there with some of her college friends in the spring. She is looking forward to it. Hope beds will be better by then. We do love staying there.
This is the perfect house. The house was clean and well maintained. We really enjoyed the gas fireplace and the view of the river. Very easy check in and check out process. Great place to stay if you are in the area for a Virginia Tech game or just want to enjoy the beautiful river. Make sure you take a walk down to the swinging bridge. I wish we would have stayed more than one night! Also, make sure you go to the animal drive-thru safari that's 12 miles away.
Very clean, well-appointed, perfect for families
We had a wonderful weekend at the Overlook. In town for a mini family reunion and to celebrate my sister’s 50th birthday, the home offered a great place to relax and enjoy. First impression when entering the home was that it was warm and comfy. It was very clean (I love that!) and had everything we needed for the weekend (down to the surprise Trader Joe’s soap hiding in the Irish Spring Box - score!!). The five bedrooms were perfect for my parents and two of our families with my other sister and her family staying nearby. Coming from CT, PA, TN and VA, this great rental offered a central location to sit back and enjoy. We loved the VA Safari Park - all ages from 4 to 75. Definitely recommend the Foot of the Mountain Cafe. Don’t let the modest outside appearance fool you - great flavors and fresh ingredients. A big thank you to the lovely owners of this home - the rental process and check-in were easy and stress free. Would definitely stay here again.
Amazing house and experience!
The host was a tremendous help with setting us up in the house. Our time was relaxing, and the host answered any questions I had extremely fast. I would recommend this house to anyone wanting to stay in that area.
Everything was as advertised, we had a great time. The house was clean and well stocked. Phyliss was very responsive and helpful.
