The cabin is snuggled in the woods under large old-growth ponderosa pines near the Wallow Burn which has regrown with abundant new vegetation and wildflowers that attracts elk, deer, and other wildlife right up to the deck. About the host
Hosted by Harriet Barker
This property has been in the Windes family for three generations. in 1959 William Harvey Windes and his son, Jim Windes, purchased the property. When Jim's parents died the property was split with Jim retaining the parcel this cabin is on. Jim died in 2019 and passed the cabin down to his son, John. John spent his summers here as a kid with his grandparents and cousins. He spent every day wandering the creek and fishing every hole and run until he knew it like the back of his hand. As he got older he brought his sons up and continues to enjoy hunting and fishing the Greer area with his family. The best part about the Greer cabin though, is just sitting on the covered deck, listening to the creek burble, or the rain patter, while sipping on a hot cup of something. More often than not you'll be wrapped in a blanket, even in summer. This is high country.
Why they chose this property
Because it's the best place to be in Arizona in the summer. It's that simple. This cabin is one of the last cabins on the East Fork Road. It is very quiet and private. The property borders Forest Service land and the creek is a stone's throw away. This is THE place to get away from it all and renew your soul. It's also easy. It has all the comforts of home from satellite TV to a crock pot. Bring your groceries and stay for a week without ever starting up the car while you are here. Unwind. Walk up or downstream to fish. Hiking or biking are right out the door. Let the kids go play in the meadow while you sip a cup on the deck and take in the cool air. Abundant wildlife is visible from the cabin. Deer, elk, squirrels, birds, elk, and sometimes more exciting critters are all common sights. Summer monsoons bring pleasant rain and thrilling lightning and thunder. Or . . . take a 5 minute drive to town for dining, drinks, and basic supplies. Five minutes to the Greer lakes, 45 minutes to Big Lake, 35 minutes to Sunrise ski resort. Some people come for the quiet. Some for the wildlife. Others come to fish, hunt, or even to hunt mushrooms! In the spring it's the world coming to life - wild daffodils and pussy willows on the creek. In the summer it is a respite from the heat -green grass and wildflowers. In the fall it is crisp air and changing leaves of the aspens. In all seasons it is bright stars at night and quiet days that go by slowly but end too quickly. Most visitors come back. Because once it gets into your soul you'll hunger for it when away and think about it often.
