About Peg McAllister

We purchased this beautifully located cottage in 2005, near the Wai O'pae Tidepools. We love the serenity, the endless options of things to do, the sound of the ocean, the tropical fragrant flowers, coconuts, papaya and aloe growing on the property. Each day brings a beautiful sunrise over the tidepools, snorkeling among colorful fish and coral, a place to relax and to enjoy family and friends.

Peg McAllister purchased this cottage in 2005

Why Peg McAllister chose Kapoho

Our Hawaiian cottage features a unique natural lava heated swimming pool, tropical plants, palms, even a Black crowned Heron comes to fish on occasion. An outdoor lava BBQ, wrap around porch and fully screened in lanai. Privacy on all sides of this property, offering lush vegetation and ocean sounds.

What makes this cottage unique

The view from the wrap around porch offers changing views of the natural lava heated pool as the tide changes twice each day. I fell in love with the property because of the pool, I jumped in during my first visit with the realtor! I was sold that this is where I want to spend my vacations. Many of our guests come back year after year, too!

Punana Kiowai offers a great location at the eastern most tip of the Big Island. Located on its own tidal pool and 100 yards from the famous Wai 'Opae tidepools. Nearby Ahalanai Hot pond and Isaac Hale boat launch (Pohiki). Near historic town of Pahoa, Kalapana, great for trips to see lava flow and visit Volcano National Park. A day trip to Kona side of Big Island, this is the best location for outdoor enthusiasts and overall site seeing.

Beautiful cottage with its own hot pool

  • 5 of 5

This comfortable 2 bedroom cottage feels like home! Everything you could want including your own geothermal warm pool and just a short walk to the Kapoho Tide Pools. This was our third stay and we'll be back.

Well cared for great place well away from hustle and bustle

  • 5 of 5

The house is very comfortable. With two bedrooms and one bath it has plenty of space with outside verandas. There is a large covered and screen enclosed lanai with lounge chairs, tables, lighting for great outside seating. The lava pool is wonderful. Even when the tide is out there is plenty of water for a dip. And the house is very close to the tidal pools which have wonderful snorkeling. Overall, a great little hideaway.

Perfect location!

  • 5 of 5

A charming little cottage with its own hot pond just a few minutes walk from the tide pools. Well kept. Clean. All the conveniences we needed. Loved the outdoor shower after our swims. Despite all the rain during our stay, it was mostly sunny everyday... I guess that’s why they call it sunny Kapoho in Hilo! The tide pools were the highlight of our stay in this part of the island. Be sure to drive down the “red road” to the beach and make your way to Uncle Roberts on Wednesday night. You really can’t beat the value in this rental and we would definitely stay here again. Mahalo Pegg!

Great place to relax in beautiful Hawaii!

  • 5 of 5

This property is just the perfect place to spend some time and just get away from it all. We found the house to be very clean and just the right size for 2 couples to share a little piece of heaven. We found all we needed to have a good time snorkeling and sun bathing. The tide pool in back is great for having your own place to just soak while having some friendly little fish come up and say hello. If you enjoy reading then you've found utopia. Very quiet laid back spot with a large lanai and great deck over looking the private tide pool. There's a basketball hoop in back with a large concrete area, you'll find the basketball and oh by the way bicycles in the supply room with the washer and dryer. This place has it all!

Pahoa has a great little market to stock up on supplies. Also, you will find several nice restauraunts. Try the Black Rock Cafe for breakfast lunch and dinner. Check out Kaleo's for dinner and enjoy great food, appropriately priced and a very nice friendly atmosphere. Of course if you want to explore a littlle, you'll find Ken's in Hilo and a Luau on the Kona side of the island.

I'd recommend this place to anyone looking for a small group getaway. A small young family will be right at home here. We spent a week and were very happy with the experience.

So don't hesitate to come to this pleasant Hawaiian home You'll be glad you did and won't want to leave!

Owner's Response: Aloha and Mahalo for your wonderful review. I am just now enjoying our stay here, too. We are freshening everything and have even ordered a new refrigerator to arrive soon. Also purchased new chaise lounges, a new colorful umbrella and decorative pillows. We discovered a new restaurant across from Big Island Candies in Hilo: Hawaiian Style Cafe, 681 Manono Street, Hilo, Hawaiian comfort food. Wednesday evening at Uncle Robert’s in Kalapana for market, food and overall scene is always fun. So glad you enjoyed all the amenities we provide and hope you will come again.

A real slice of Hawaii

  • 5 of 5

We were looking for a property away from the major cities but close to the ocean. This place was perfect. The property is walking minutes away from the ocean. The lava heated swimming pool is fantastic. We started every day in it. We enjoyed the property so much that we felt cheated out of the relaxing time we spent there when on the road visiting Volcano National Park and other day trips to see other sites on the Hilo side of the island. Peg has everything you need there. We enjoyed lounging around the pool. The hammock was used several day as well. Bicycles gave two in our party a chance to explore the area without a vehicle. The grill provided great meals, and the screened in porch in the back provided an outdoor living room that we used many nights for relaxation or family game time. The area is quiet, except for the frogs and birds, which we found enhanced our experience with the nature in the area. Peg has a great booklet that will assist you in enjoying the area to the fullest. If you enjoy snorkeling, as we did, this place is perfect. A five minute walk to a trail accessible through a private driveway leads to a series of deep pools protected from the main effects of the ocean waves closest to the shoreline. Proceed another five minutes from this area by following the road until you come to the tide pools. Here you walk out onto the lava until you find the area you would like to snorkel. You will have more current here when the tide is raising or lowering, but the water clarity in both spots no matter the wave or current condition is clear. There is no sand to stir up. The amount of people here is very few compared to other beach like snorkeling spots. The variety of ocean life seen here is amazing. Water shoes are must if you are snorkeling in this area, or even swimming in the pool because of the lava rock. We spent six nights here and wish it could have been much longer. If I ever return to the big island I would definitely want to stay here again. But I would want a longer stay, just so we could enjoy more time at Peg's

fantastic house in Kapoho. As a side note, Peg was very timely and professional in her communications both during and after the booking. And her property manager lives right across the street if you have any questions or concerns. Mahalo Peg for providing us the opportunity to enjoy your beautiful property.

Just Perfect!

  • 5 of 5

This is such a cute home, and it is really close to the Kapoho Tide Pools. It is a very easy little walk, even with snorkel gear. Everything we could have wanted was at the house; at the end of the day, it was lovely to come back to our own tide pool in the backyard. It was warmer than the cool pools, and it was perfect for soaking. The house is centrally located; Pahoa had all the food we could ask for, and it's a short jaunt to Volcanoes National Park. We loved our stay!
