This secluded architectural gem sits on a knoll in a high mountain valley surrounded by ridgelines, near the end of a dirt road in the Green Mountain National Forest.
The house is perfect for two couples or for a family with two children (or three, if one is the adventurous sort and would like her own little house). One master bedroom and bath upstairs, with two double bed rooms and a bathroom downstairs. Open living room with a recently installed heat pump and a woodstove keeps the house cozy in winter.
It is an ideal retreat, no sounds of civilization, clear skies with natural wonders all year round, yet minutes away from ski areas, cultural events and shopping.
On 5½ acres, large forests with trails on two sides, the octagon features an open plan that brings in the winter sun. The high-ceiling master bedroom occupies the entire second floor, and a wing comprises the other main bedroom. The kitchen and dining/living room are downstairs, with a small office/guest room to the side. There is a south-facing balcony for reading in the hammock, and a piano alcove. The new north-entry mudroom is a good place for outdoor gear, and a post & beam barn provides ski and boot storage. A massive circular-stone fire pit and a smaller campfire circle are on the property. A bocce court is down by the tiny house.
Ski areas abound. Aside from several beautifully groomed X-Country areas, one of which is in the meadow at the bottom of the hill through the woods, there are Bromley Mountain (10 minutes away), Magic (10 minutes), and Okemo and Stratton (25 minutes). Lowell Lake State Park is close by, for swimming, fishing and kayaking.
There are four golf clubs to choose from; Manchester (20 minutes) has loads of shopping (outlet heaven), Orvis (for trout fishing on the Battenkill), as well as many galleries, the Southern VT Arts Center, the Equinox Hotel (resort/spa), Hildene and the Dorset Theater Festival. The Weston Playhouse, oldest of Vermont's summer theaters, is minutes away, with its Broadway-infused professional summer season and after-show cabaret bar.
Great restaurants nearby; my current favorite is the JJ Hapgood Store, great old country store, beautifully renovated, with fantastic pizza oven, coffee, breakfasts, music and dining.
