Located only 40 feet from Lake Superior s beach is the Inn at Croftville Road Cottages. This unique and newly crafted building with tall multiple gabled peaks houses 5 vacation suites all with private exterior entrances. The Inn at Croftville Road Cottages #4 provides the gentle sound of breaking waves hitting the shore and spectacular views of Superior. It is designed with romance in mind. This 2-story, 1-bedroom vacation suite has a main level living room and well-equipped full-size kitchen and an upstairs bedroom and bathroom. One enters this suite from a covered porch on the Croftville Road side of the inn. The living room features a romantic wood fireplace with firewood, a smart TV and DVD player mounted above the mantle, a large window seat looking out to Superior, a dinette, a radio/CD player, and a futon. The upstairs bedroom has a plush queen bed, a decorative gas stove, a door leading out to a private deck looking out to Lake Superior, and a claw-foot soaking tub centered in a dormer window alcove. The luxurious bathroom has access from the stairs landing without entering the bedroom. This four-season inn suite is open all year and has wireless internet access. An artesian well provides excellent water for drinking. The Inn at Croftville Road Cottages #4 sleeps up to 4 people (2 on the futon) with all linens provided.

Rates and Policies:
• Longer stays are better for us as hosts. Many hosts simply require 3 night minimum stays. However, we choose to accept 1 or 2 night short stays but charge more for short stays.
• There is a 20% discount for 7 or more night stays. This discounted rate is included in your original quote when you request a 7 or more night stay.
• We have a 2 night minimum stay on weekends and a 3 night minimum stay on holidays and special events.
• We have no cleaning fee. Our cleaning costs are figured into our nightly rates. We do charge for extra guests.
• We are required to collect 12.375% in state and local sales taxes. Vrbo collects and pays 8.375% of that total. The remaining 4% Vrbo collects for us and we pay to the county. All of these show up as lodging taxes on your quote/bill.
• As hosts, we pay a 5% commission to Vrbo. This has been included in our pricing and will not show up on your quote/bill.

Croftville Road Cottages is owned and operated by Teresa and Mike Chmelik who live on-site. The inviting and romantic suites and cottages are impeccably clean and meticulously maintained. Croftville Road Cottages offers an experience reminiscent of days past when small mom and pop resorts were found all along the North Shore. However, the luxurious inn suites and cozy cottages are among the finest vacation rentals along Lake Superior. Croftville Road Cottages is conveniently located just 3 miles from downtown Grand Marais on the lakeside of scenic Croftville Road known by locals as the "walking road".

Charming, clean, perfect location, wonderful hosts. Definitely the best property of its kind where we have ever stayed. Only one caveat…if you have trouble with stairs, especially semi-spiral, you might want to rethink staying here. Bedroom and bathroom are upstairs and stairs are a bit steep and narrow with a sharp turn. Other than that, it is perfect.

First time at this property. As a couple who spend a lot of time in and around Cook County, this was a lovely surprise. Clean, quiet, right on the Lake, and virtually no traffic other than residents of Croftville Road. Thoughtfully appointed. Loved the real wood fireplace and clawfoot tub in the bedroom. A great place to return to after a couple of very long hikes. We’ll be back for sure.

A Great Place to Stay

Our 1 BR unit was very cozy and comfortable. Small deck upstairs off the bedroom was nice spot to have a drink and look at the water. Street that house is on is very quaint and pretty to drive down. Remember your password for Amazon and Netflix as those are the only "stations" you can get. I did miss not being about to get the news, but I survived. We enjoyed our stay and think you will too.

Great location on the Lake!

We loved the room we rented with the updated decor, cozy fireplaces, and heated floors. It would be more accurate to describe this as “renting a room in a bed and breakfast” because while there are totally private entrances for each cottage you can still hear each other’s noise through the shared doorways. At least in cottage #4, not sure about the noise privacy levels of the others. The hosts were wonderful and lent us a fan for some white noise, so it worked out but was unexpected.

Teresa and Mike Chmelik are the owners and operators of Croftville Road Cottages. They live in the owners quarters of their inn. In an era when most mom and pop resorts along Lake Superior are being closed, Teresa and Mike have built Croftville Road Cottages from a former resort property that had been unoccupied for 10 years. At the same time they have raised their children along Lake Superior in a small town setting and kept outside employment to support themselves while building their business. 2018 marks the first year that Croftville Road Cottages has finally fully supported them. They have done as much of the renovations, repairs, and construction as they can themselves. When that has not sufficed, Teresa and Mike have relied on the help of family, friends, and skilled local craftsmen.

Why they chose this property

Teresa and Mike long dreamed of having a resort on Lake Superior. Grand Marais had always been a special place for them. For Teresa, her parents had met as students at the Grand Marais Art Colony in the early 1950's. For Mike, Grand Marais had always been the gateway to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area. The Chmeliks with the help of their good friends purchased their dream property in July 2003. It was a former resort property unoccupied for 10 years. That summer and fall was spent making the house habitable while living in a borrowed camper trailer until Halloween. The next 3 years were used to clean up the property and extensively renovate the cottages. Croftville Road Cottages opened for business in 2007. In 2011 the Chmeliks decided to reconstruct the house into the main inn for the resort providing living quarters, an office, and 5 vacation suites. In June they bought a travel trailer to live in and serve as an office during the expansion. With a variance granted, the Chmeliks secured financing in June 2013 after the deconstruction and demolition of the old house had already begun. Construction for the inn began in August. The Chmeliks moved into the partially completed inn in October 2016. The first 2 vacation suites in the inn opened in June 2017 and remaining 3 in July 2018.

We offer an experience reminiscent of days past when small mom and pop resorts were found all along the North Shore. However, our cozy cottages and luxurious suites are among the finest vacation rentals along Lake Superior. The inviting and romantic cottages and suites are impeccably clean and meticulously maintained. Nestled on 540ft of rocky shoreline, we are conveniently located just 3 miles from downtown Grand Marais on the lakeside of scenic Croftville Road known as the "walking road".
