'Casa Sammie' - very private oceanfront bungalow with a completely private pool!

Bedrooms 3
Half Baths1
Space 2,300 sq ft
Property type house
Minimum Stay 4 - 5 nights

About the property

3 bedrooms, 2 ½ bathrooms, sleeps 7

This is a very central, but private, location in the small fishing village of Tarcoles. It's an oceanfront property with a beautiful view of the Pacific and you are able to watch magnificent sunsets from the large covered front porch or raised gazebo. Scarlet macaws fly over morning and evening going to and from their feeding grounds and often spend time throughout the day in the trees on and around the property. You can walk on the beach for miles, sometimes without seeing another soul! Less than a 10 minute drive to the north is the Tarcoles River where you often see huge crocodiles basking in the sun.

The house is very comfortable and has a lovely bar on the front porch. Both front and back have large covered areas to sit under and relax, after a busy day of sightseeing. As an added bonus, our English speaking manager is available to help you out with car rentals, tours or anything else that you need.

Professionally managed with a personal touch by a property owner who cares!

Our manager is very helpful. She will even stock the fridge before you arrive!

You can buy fresh fish for your supper, right off the boats, from the Cooperativa only a two minute walk down the road or, if you prefer, you can go to one of the many restaurants within a few minutes drive. For all your grocery needs, Jaco boasts a new, very modern grocery store.

We are five minutes from Carara Biological Reserve where you are able to hike for hours and view the nesting boxes of the macaws. You will also see many other varieties of birds and animals.

Although our beach is not the best for swimming, due to the effect of the Tarcoles River to the north, there are several good swimming beaches within a short drive. We usually walk on the beach and swim in our private pool.

We are only 20 minutes north of Jaco, a major surfing area, and an easy one and one half hour drive north of the beautiful Manuel Antonio Park where you can see white-faced and spider monkeys swinging through the trees, or perhaps a sloth, moving in slow motion through the branches.

If you are looking for a home away from home, where you can get in touch with nature & see the real Costa Rica, look no further than 'Casa Sammie.

We have a raised gazebo at the side of the house for amazing views of the Pacific & the sunset. At the back is a large covered patio and a beautiful private pool. We've also added a bodega next to the house with an additional bathroom and a third bedroom that sleeps 2 more people. Very nice & private.

Phone, Satellite TV, Full Kitchen, Microwave, Coffee Maker, Refrigerator, Blender, Toaster Oven, Cooking Utensils provided, Linens and towels provided, Clothes Washer, Charcoal Grill (BBQ), Maid Service available for a small fee, Hot Showers & hot water in the kitchen, Air Conditioners in two of the bedrooms.

Activities: Hiking in Carara Park, Golf, Fishing, Wildlife Viewing, Horseback Riding, Sightseeing, Swimming, Surfing, Birdwatching, Zip Line Canopy Tours, Butterfly Farm, Gorgeous Waterfall - hike to the bottom and swim in the natural pools, Crocodile Tours.

Area: We are only a 1 1/4 hr. drive from the airport in San Jose and, as we are in a central location, it is easy to take many tours and excursions.

Tours, Shopping and More Photos: Don't miss a tour with a local fisherman. Nema is a neighbour who will take you - fishing for a day; to beautiful white sand beaches for a swim; jigging for fish; touring the coastline; diving for lobster, which they will cook for you, along with the fish that you've caught, on a grill at a private beach; to visit a waterfall; or, they will put together a tour including all or any of the above. We highly recommend it. You'll have a true Costa Rican experience!

There's a modern grocery store in Herradura, just 15 min. south and Jaco (20 min.) has many great places to shop.

We have lots more photos of the house & surrounding area that we'd be happy to share with you. Just click on the link below for 'more photos of this home and area'. You can also check out our video online by clicking on the 'virtual tour' link below.

About Larry & Lynn Green

We're a Canadian couple, married for 47 years, who have been travelling to Costa Rica several times a year since 2000. We have 3 married children, 5 wonderful grandchildren and assorted grand-dogs.

Larry & Lynn Green purchased this house in 2005

Why Larry & Lynn Green chose Tarcoles

After travelling throughout Costa Rica for 4 years we decided to buy in Tarcoles. Our decision was based on the fact that it's one of the only places left where you see the beautiful Scarlet Macaws every day. Another important factor was that it's located just over one hour from the San Jose airport, which makes it very handy for us, and our guests, to get to. It's also centrally located for easy access to many of the attractions that tourists want to see.

What makes this house unique

As we're in a small fishing village, not a tourist town or gated community, you will have a chance to see what life in Costa Rica is really like. You'll see fishermen walking down the road with their daily catch, kids playing soccer just down the road, locals swimming in the river at the end of the road, Peepo getting a load of sand with his team of oxen, as well as many other local sights. We have lots of birds, iguanas, butterflys, etc. who come to visit daily, as we've spent time improving the gardens around the pool and at the side of the house in order to attract them. You'll always be surrounded by flowers as you float in the private pool or walk through the property. The views of the sun setting over the ocean, from our raised gazebo, are truly stunning. Many guests have told us that it's the 'room' that they use the most.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Our stay @ Casa Sammie was wonderful, everything we expected. Patri was awesome in helping us with our outings. The Zip Line was quite the adventure. Nema & Kevin showed us a great time, very handsome and polite young men. Hope to visit again in the near future.

Home away from home... in paradise!

  • 5 of 5

We travelled from Canada and spent 10 days as a family (two boys, age 13 & 10) at Casa Sammie and all had the most amazing time! From the moment we arrived we felt relaxed and comfortable, the house exactly as was described in the listing. Our fridge was stocked with the food that we requested and cerveza's to help relax us after a long day of travelling thanks to the wonderful property manager, Patri. She answered all of our questions and was very helpful with finding tours that we would all enjoy. We also had the pleasure of meeting Lynn, the property owner, who was also wonderful! My favourite place in the home was definitely the raised gazebo where we enjoyed coffee & listening to the birds in the morning and at night watching the gorgeous sunsets & playing cards. The private pool was amazing after long hot days of excursions to cool off and relax. We even had 4 Iguana's warming themselves and keeping us company while swimming; The boys absolutely loved that the property was so full of life!

From Quinn, age 13: My favourite part was fishing with Kevin & Nema who lived in the village. I caught a jack fish for us to eat and they also stopped so we could go snorkeling. Nema caught 5 rock lobsters with a hook and cooked them for us on a private beach. Everything was delicious. We also got to see sardine bait balls and pelicans were diving in to catch them and little rays were jumping out of the water too. Very cool!!

From Roan, Age 10: I really liked the small village where the house was. It was quiet and everyone was very friendly. My favourite thing was the gazebo to watch the sunsets and Jose's crocodile tour. Jose was very funny and named all the crocodiles after celebrities. I hope I can go back one day.

All in all, our family vacation was fantastic and I would definitely recommend staying at Casa Sammie if you're looking for a truly relaxing holiday in "Real" Costa Rica!

P.S. The beaches in Manuel Antonio national park are a must see! And Nauyaca wateralls.... I could go on for days. Just go!!

Quiet tropical stay.

  • 4 of 5

We stayed at Casa Sammie 5 nights while exploring the pacific central coast. We enjoyed the quiet town of Tarcoles and it's close proximity to Herradura, Punta Leona and Jaco. We explored the Carara national park and spent a day fishing and snorkeling with Kevin and Nema. Patri, the property manger set up a guide for us to explore Carara as well as setting up the fishing trip. Both were great experiences. We definitely recommend a day on the water with Kevin and Nema . They are great hosts and know the area well. We had a great time! Patri has many helpful contacts in the area and is readily available if you need something.

We enjoyed watching the Macaws flying over head to their feeding grounds. We also witness feeding in the trees in front of the house. They were a daily sight!

We enjoyed the pool and the beautiful plants in this yard. The house had all that we needed for our stay. The beach is great for walking on, we found that we needed "water shoes" for parts of it due to rocks. It is a fishing village and not a spot for swimming, however, swimmable beaches are close by. It is truly a unique place!

Very private

  • 4 of 5

We really enjoyed Casa Sammie!! It felt like we were at home, the pool was very private with all the beautiful and lush flower garden around it. Every time we swam we always looked up in the trees to see if we could spot an iguana on a branch. We watched the sunsets from the gazebo and listened to the birds while sipping our coffee in the morning. Even though we could not swim in the ocean we enjoyed our daily morning walks on the beach. The highlight of our 2-week stay was our fishing trip with Nema and Kevin ...awesome!!!! It was a thrill to reel in those barracudas and enjoyed the lobster feast on the private beach. If you enjoy seafood and fish you are 2 minutes away from the fish market where the fishermen bring in their daily catch !!! It's a short walk to the local super market and the owner is very friendly. There is a polo (fried chicken) place and it is delicious better than kentucky fried chicken. There is also a restaurant short walking distance away.

The Manager Patri is an amazing person who went out of her way to make us feel at home and help us with our inquiries and concerns. Raquel and Ron are such nice people and they treated us like family. Thank you for making our stay an amazing experience.

We got to meet the owner Lynn Green ... a very pleasant, friendly person. Thank you Lynn for taking the time to chat with us.

Tranquil with lots of birds and wildlife

  • 5 of 5

Casa Sammie was what we were looking for and more. The photos and videos on the website tell it all and it's exactly as advertised. Very relaxing in a non-touristy village with lots of birds, especially the beautiful Scarlet Macaws who visited every day. We've traveled to Costa Rica many times and are still awed by the scenery, the wonderful people, and the amazing wildlife. Casa Sammie is in a perfect location to see all of the above. We will return!

Beautiful, Private and Tranquil

  • 5 of 5

I was looking for a quiet, relaxing vacation and Casa Sammie certainly fit the bill! It's very private and there's a lovely view of the ocean from the gazebo. I spent many hours up there just reading and enjoying the view. Patri was very helpful with anything that I needed and it was fun to try to talk with Frankie, the gardener, as well as the locals. Everyone was very friendly. I had several excellent meals delivered to the door from a local restaurant, El Mango, and also enjoyed meals at Chepe's Bar. Their whole fish is excellent. I didn't rent a car but the bus comes right through town frequently and I could go to a larger grocery store when needed. However, there are also a few small corner grocers in town where I could get most of what I wanted, including wine and beer. I would certainly recommend Casa Sammie to anyone who wants a more unique place to stay, instead of a hotel or a resort. It gives you a good understanding of how people live in a small fishing village. I really enjoyed my stay!

Carara National Park
Tarcoles Bridge
Car: recommended

We are located 1 1/4 hrs. drive west of the international airport in San Jose, in the town of Tarcoles. It is about 20 min. north of the major tourist city, Jaco, which is known for its great surfing. As an alternative, you can also drive from the international airport in Liberia, Guanacaste to Casa Sammie in 2 1/2 hrs.

We recommend that you have a car for more flexibility in visiting the many natural areas and parks within an easy drive of the house, such as the Tarcoles river, Carara Park and spectacular waterfalls. Manuel Antonio Park, a beautiful reserve where you can see monkeys, sloths and iguanas is a scenic 1 1/2 hrs. drive south.
