About George and Signe Shinn
I am a retired aerospace engineer/spec home builder and my wife is a French teacher. Both of us love beautiful architecture, history, and the island life, so we are quite at home here in Coronado. My wife was a hotel Concierge for many years and both of us love to offer recommendations for leisure time in Coronado and San Diego. We met while doing our undergraduate work at the University of Southern California...GO Trojans. I completed a masters in engineering at San Diego State Univ. while Signe went on to graduate studies at Occidental Univ. We have both lived in Southern Calif. most of our lives and have extensive knowledge of the many things the area has to offer.
George and Signe Shinn purchased this Cottage in 1936
Why George and Signe Shinn chose Coronado Village
This elegant 1920's Spanish home sets the mood beautifully for a visit to Coronado with its sunny island weather and rich history. Walk or ride bicycles to an excellent swimming or surfing beach (bicycles included), or watch the sunset by a campfire. Take a lovely walk by the nearby famous Del Coronado Hotel or partake of Coronado Village.
What makes this Cottage unique
Central location, private courtyard with BBQ, part of an elegant 1920s spanish home on one of Coronado's most desirable streets and access to laundry facilities in the main house.

We came back again!! And loved it!! My fur babies are so content here as I am. Kennedy the owners dog has a crush on my Gracie. So cute. This stay I had to go to the ER on my last night and that was quite scary and challenging to say the least. George offered help and he let my dogs out as for I was in the ER very long and middle of the night. By the time I got home is was 3 am and I had to be checked out for other tenants were checking in. I was in no condition to drive back to AZ , so George and Signe offered me and my fur babies to stay in there home. How sweet and nice was that? When I stayed in Dec/Jan. I told Them I knew the had good hearts, boy I was correct!! I always 99% correct. Can't wait to come back again!! Sooooon!

I had the chance to visit this cute cottage in Coronado and really enjoyed it. I am a very clean neat person with 2 clean fur babies. Everything was clean and as pictured. We loved our stay here. George and Signe were so nice and was there any time I needed something. They're very warm and friendly people/owners. WILL Come Back Again!!!!
Thank you for everything
Fabulous Beach Guesthouse
This charming tastefully decorated guesthouse was perfect for my dog and I. The hosts are very gracious and I look forward to staying with them again! The location is excellent on one of Coronado's most attractive streets, close to the beach and the bay, plus the well maintained historic home has beautiful 1920's Spanish architecture with lush landscaping. I very strongly recommend this property!!!
Unclean. Very old cobwebs behind & under everything. Dust, dog fur & nasty odor in the bathroom.
Just received the insurance claim the owners sent to VRBO. The amount of over $1,500. Of course, the mandatory insurance coverage that was required will cover the cost.
I am a positive person and meet everyone with an open mind. My parents raised me not to say anything unkind and live and let live. However, the owners listed items that functioned the same upon arrival. Such as, replacing an entire door that was sticking on the top, which are little sanding would fix.
The current guest next door, which will be staying there for sometime, began complaining to the owners about that noise and many other problems our last week. She apparently told the owners that she was going to call the police. Mind you, our 20 month was dealing with a 15 hour jetlag difference. My wife and I felt harassed from this other guest and everything increasingly got worse. The before mentioned guest is having a house built across the street from this location and plans on becoming a permanent member of the wonderful community of Coronado. So, I understand the owners predicament.
The owners did not allow us to do all of our laundry. Which, was an issue for us because they only provide one set of sheets for your stay. We purchased other sheets and a mattress protector. However, part of their insurance claim is to replace the never used mattress protector and very little used sheets. Needless to say, we vacated earlier than planned
There were two other guests that were pleasant enough, however with two dogs in the backyard, there is always something to step in. George's son is in his twenties and has issues with touching/ moving his clothes from washer and dryer.
I cleaned up after our son and really improved their neglected garden area, but was never thanked. In fact, George took a hose to clean leaves, although there is and has been a serious drought in California, and damaged our son's new $300 battery operated car.
I understand that no one is perfect. We will continue to use VRBO and not let this experience tarnish us. Hopefully, thesefactual statements will help everyone with compassion. Understanding others first, before trying to be understood.
Safe travels everyone. Peace and much love.
This review from Celestino appears to be retributional since he had just received the insurance claim that he mentioned ( itemized below). Our 30 five star ratings on all four properties (links available) that we have available for guests speak for itself to say that his harsh rating of us is an aberration from what we have consistently earned.
In this first and only insurance claim except when guests had requested one, we had considerable repairs due to water damage. We and others were seeing daily water from steam streaming down the windows, and, not until Celestino had left, did we find swelled and stained wood. Not included on the claim was the wear and tear to our new laundry machines which he used non-stop even at 4am.
This guest was a disturbance for our other guests. They made constant noise all through the night causing another guest in our home not to be able to sleep despite earplugs. His using the laundry machines through the night continued even though he had been asked to refrain. His answer was that he saw no one else was using them. Our gas & electric bill was about double, over $700! I was forced to set rules about their usage which they ignored. Secondly, they allowed their two year old to slam the kitchen cabinets for play at night. He said he was a strong believer in not curbing a child's creativity, but this noise disturbed other guests.
I think we were more than hospitable towards them, but we had a responsibility to our other guests to inform him of customary houserules. We did not complain even when they moved all the heavy antique furniture and never put it back. They rented from us for approximately a month and caused damages exceeding $1500, such as a soiled mattress, probably by their 19 month old, a broken bed, broken toilet, broken kitchen faucet, etc. He denied it, so we got no compensation. If he had said something about the toy car which was left outside all month, so we would have done our best to be hospitable as always. We invite guests to our properties, which are all part our historic home, only because we believe in the goodness of people and we won't let this change that.
Located just six blocks from Coronado Beach, the number 1 beach in America according to Dr. Beach in 2012, this studio is perfectly located. About six blocks in the other direction and your on the bay viewing San Diego's beautiful skyline. The world famous Hotel Del Coronado is 1.4 miles away or a 7 minute bike ride (bikes provided), and Orange Ave with it's many restaurants, theaters, shops, grocery stores, etc is about 0.7 miles away.
