About Brook Starr, a Hawaii Licensed Realtor

Born and raised on Maui in the area known as 'upcountry', Hana is a place for us to visit and unwind, enjoy some surf on the unique black sand beaches, hiking the rugged terrain and reconnecting after a busy work week. We hope you can share in the experience as well.

Why Brook Starr, a Hawaii Licensed Realtor chose East Maui

Surrounded by lush green trees in close proximity to town and beaches, immaculately clean and newly renovated, this house has become our home away from home.

We love being with the family in Hana on weekends to play at the beach, surf together, enjoy Hana's quiet and beautiful surroundings to unwind and recharge. Hana has so much to offer from hiking and swimming to kayaking and snorkeling its an outdoor tourist's dream.

What makes this cottage unique

After searching for some time, we saw this Hana Bay View property as the perfect opportunity and location to take in all that Hana has to offer. We gave the house some love and attention, renovated it and let it shine. We now want to share it with travelers from all over the world who want to experience Maui's East side beauty. Aloha!

Our home is located in the rural town of Hana, on the East side of Maui. There are beautiful beaches nearby, including Hana Bay, a 10 minute walk away, and Hamoa Beach, a 10 minute drive down the road, consistently named one of the most beautiful beaches in America, where we like to spend our time surfing, swimming with the kids, and lounging under the shady trees.

Lots of hiking to see waterfalls and swimming in fresh water pools, including Oheo (Seven Sacred Pools) that is part of the U.S. National Park Service and Waianapanapa State Park that has a cool volcanic grotto you can swim in, a black sand beach, and a blow hole along the coastline.

Or just relax on the covered deck, play some cards, board games, read a book, or enjoy a movie or two via the wireless internet on your computer or tablet.

There are many mom and pop places to eat, including a bright orange burrito food truck right in town with great burritos, coffee and pastries that is owned/operated by Andy and Tuna, a brick oven pizza place, Thai food stop, other 'plate lunch' stops, and fresh organic fruit and veggie stands where much of the food is grown organically right here in Hana.

There are two main general stores in town to get most of your basic necessities. If you want a large variety of food to choose from though it may be wise to get some provisions from the main part of the island before you head out to Hana. Our favorite food store on the island is Mana Foods, in the town of Pa'ia on the North Shore, where they're loaded with fresh, natural and organic grocery shopping, a deli, bakery and vitamin room. Although, we also frequent Hasegawa's General Store and the Hana Ranch Store in town during our stays.

The road out to Hana itself is half the treat, with dramatic scenery of the cliff-lined coastline, a couple of fruit stands (including a mobile creperie along the road in the jungle as you begin your journey!), and lots of hikes from trail heads off the road. As with any adventuring please be cautious and aware of your surroundings and weather conditions while enjoying the outdoors.

A tip for the drive out to Hana, pack a lunch with snacks and drinks, don't rush it, and pull over for faster drivers if they come up behind you. There are many pull-out spots, the drivers behind you will appreciate it, and you can relax and really soak in the beauty.

There is one gas station in Hana town, and none along the 2-hour drive from the main towns on the other side of the island, so fill up before you get here.

Hana is a tropical paradise, which means it has little critters like mosquitoes or ants at times, and don't be surprised by the odd chicken or two, mongoose, (cows, there's a beautiful working cattle ranch) or other wildlife in an around Hana town and the East side of the island. Our home is usually nice and breezy, and we have quarterly treatments of the outside and inside of the home with natural repellents, so there should be little activity of small critters, however, closing screen doors and cleaning up food after eating is always a good idea. We have some mosquito repellent there if you need it, just in case. And if you have any problems please let us know.

Our location is very convenient to the beaches, sites and stops in Hana, with great views, and as can be seen from the photos and mapping, we are in a residential setting. There can be some typical neighborhood activity including traffic on Hana highway, neighboring pets / dogs occasionally barking or local chickens that roam freely. We have a large redwood fence along the rural road and plantings around the property to make you feel tucked away. Feel free to get in touch with me to answer any questions you may have.

The 1br/1ba rental rate is $199 US/night, a one-time cleaning fee of $55 plus taxes and fees, which you can reserve yourself online. Maximum number of guests is 2.

The maximum number of guests we may have on the property is 6, if you have additional members in your party please call or email us, we can refer you to additional rentals in the immediate area to accommodate everyone.

We hope you enjoy your stay!!!

The property is owned and co-managed by Brook Y. Starr, a Hawaii licensed realtor.

Beautiful place!

  • 5 of 5

This is an adorable little cottage, sort of a little "guest house" sharing a property with a main house. There are trees and a shade cover though which pretty much block the view of the main house, so it still feels very private. You do have a view of Hana Bay and it is a short less than 5 minute drive to reach it. The town of Hana is a beautiful and very quaint, although there are a lot of mosquitos so be sure to pack some bug spray!

The unit itself is very well kept and clean. It appears to have been updated recently. My husband and I stayed here for the last two days of our honeymoon and really had a wonderful time. The space was perfect for the two of us and Brooke was great to work with.

We have T-Mobile and had no cell phone reception in most areas in and around Hana, but were able to use the wifi at the cottage just fine when we were there. We were on our honeymoon, so we didn't really need to talk to anyone else anyway!

Very clean and well maintained - right in middle of Hana Town!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I came here on our honeymoon and stayed while on our travels to other islands. This place had everything we needed to have a quiet and relaxing time while in Hana. You can wake up and watch the sunrise from the deck or bedroom, nice sized kitchen for cooking and the general store is right up the road. My husband and I made great memories here, it was our first time in Maui and we will definitely be back! There is also parking on premises which made getting around super easy with the rental, many beaches close by and good food trucks! Thank you for sharing this home with us we LOVED it!

Home away from home in paradise

  • 5 of 5

We LOVED our stay at this cute little home, favorite part of our trip to Maui (we stayed in West maui for 5 nights and Hana for 2 nights). Staying two nights in Hana allowed us to enjoy and take our time with the road to Hana. The most stunning parts are at the end of the trip and if you don't spend the night in Hana you would be too exhausted to enjoy the black and red sand beaches, waterfall swimming holes, and caves! The cottage is newly renovated and is very clean, safe/secure, and comfortable. The house is hot at first, but once you turn on the AC unit in the bedroom it cools down to a comfortable temperature. You have an excellent view of the bay from the kitchen- the sunrise is beautiful. You have all the basic necessities you need in the kitchen and bathroom. There are some great food trucks just about a mile down the road. Thank you to the owners for sharing your cottage with us!

Nice unit, newly redone

  • 5 of 5

We've stayed at a few VRBO's in places like Hana (ie. Hawaii, near the volcano national park) so we understand that there can be issues with "nature" (cough, bugs, cough) -- however, I was so glad that we had NO issues with bugs during our stay here (that was my number one note!).

The place is newly redone, all the screens and windows are in great shape, nice flooring, the appliances worked great (used the microwave, coffee maker, the stove, the oven, fridge), there's also a toaster and a blender. Place was adequately stocked with utensils, measuring cups, a whole Kirkland stainless steel pan/pot set (good quality cooking supplies), baking sheets, and salt and pepper and coffee. Note there was no oil (so if you plan to cook, you may want to make sure you pick that up). There's also charcoal for the grill (we didn't do) and an igloo/ice pack in freezer if you want to take a picnic with you).

The A/C was in the bedroom and worked very well. We had no issues sleeping due to being overly warm/uncomfortable. The bed is a nice fluffy bed, king size too. As Hana gets a lot of rain, it was quite nice laying in the fluffy bed listening to the rain.

There was also a really nice porch (which is featured in the main pic) which has a picnic bench to dine al fresco.

Used the washer/dryer, located under the unit in a closet. Worked great, and soap was provided.

Didn't use the TV's but noticed there was one in the main room, near the sofa, and one in the bedroom. There's also an iHome type speaker set up which was nice to have.

A fantastic stay, and really could not have asked for more! Checkin was super easy, and it was easy to find etc with the directions provided. Really glad we stayed in Hana for 2 nights and even more glad we stayed here!

Tigard, OR

lovely cottage

  • 4 of 5

The cottage is clean and nicely updated. It feels private, even though there are houses nearby. There's a nice view of the ocean. Only problem was barking dogs in neighbor's yard that went on for a while starting at 5:30 AM. Closing the window helped.
