Pioneer living in style! Sometime around 1890, a very talented Finnish builder crafted several traditional log buildings on Minnesota’s Iron Range. We are fortunate to have one of these well-preserved structures at the Green Gate property, and have masterfully updated it into a unique, historic home. We believe big things can come in small packages. The Log Cabin is a comfortable and very well-equipped home in a small footprint. This 1890s hand-hewn log cabin has been beautifully updated into a modern, cozy space. The 15′ x 15′ floorplan includes a kitchen, dining table, sofa and wood stove, plus a full bathroom neatly tucked below the loft staircase. Thanks to the Norwegian owner (who also happens to be an engineer), this Finnish log cabin is equipped with modern mechanicals including air conditioning, in-floor heat, and a high-efficiency tankless water heater for endless hot water. To complete your log cabin experience, there is also a gorgeous glass-fronted wood stove and always a full supply of firewood available During your stay. The well-appointed kitchen on the main floor includes a 2-burner gas cooktop, farm sink, concrete countertops, an undercounter refrigerator/freezer, coffemaker, teapot, and cookware/serving ware for 2-3 guests. A microwave and countertop convection oven are also provided in the nearby closet should you need them. The upper floor provides a peaceful rest space with a full-sized platform bed, reclaimed oak flooring, vaulted ceiling, air conditioning, DVD player/monitor, and great views of the surrounding forests. Outside, the wrap-around porch covers the south and west sides and includes a custom screen enclosure for bug free lounging in the warmer months.

Very nice stay for a couple. Has everything you need. Lots of stuff to do in the area. I would recommend this place for any couple to stay and have fun on a short or long vacation.
Beautiful cabin inside and out! No detail was missed on this adorable cabin. Close to the Mesabi Trail and Golf Courses! Perfect cabin for a perfect weekend!
Nice place! It's about a 5 minute drive from Giants Ridge and a couple minutes from "downtown" Biwabik. A modernized log cabin tiny home that fits everything you need for vacationing in a small package.
There were a few minor things that we didn't enjoy about our stay. The smoke alarm went off when we used the stove because there's no hood or fan. The couch downstairs turns into a small bed but we couldn't find sheets for it.
The tiny cabin was just what we wanted. The pictures and descriptions were accurate. It is amazing how many amenities were available in such a small space...all the kitchen supplies, cooking utensils, pots and pans; fridge and freezer, etc. etc. The cabin has a wrap-around porch that allowed us to relax outside even when it rained. There was some road noise audible but not too distracting. Easy access to the Mesabi Bike Trail that we walked a couple of times in addition to the more traditional hiking trails in the area. Shawn was easily accessible and helpful. Would go again and consider winter snowshoeing and cross-country ski trips. We were unable to have an outdoor fire because of regional forest fires so want to go back for that, too!
The cabin was perfect with everything you needed. You can see the passion and thought of detail put into restoring this building. A very relaxing environment. Shawn the owner is always available with a quick phone call for any questions you might have.
The log cabin was beautifully renovated and in a pristine location. Minutes from Giant’s Ridge and points beyond. With acres to explore and trail connections everywhere, this is truly the ideal spot for a vacation on the Mesabi Range.
This was our second time staying here and it was great once again. It is such a unique place and maintained so well. Perfect for a getaway for any reason. Thanks again!
Perfect for a couple looking for a cozy, unplugged weekend (not that you are out of touch from the rest of the world if you don't want to be). The heated floor and wood-burning stove are wonderful, the bed is comfortable, and I love that there are snowshoe trails so close by.
Very well set up. Hike, bike around there. Drive to other look locations and hike/bike/paddle. Walk along the river. Enough room to relax and be together. Perfect size kitchen with everything you need to make what you need to make. No wifi and they should keep it that way! You WILL like it here!
This property is truly a work of art within the solitude of the wooded setting! The details, craftsmanship, and thoughtful efficiency make this cozy cabin feel like home. The weather cooperated for spending most of our time outside, walking the trails, and stargazing by the fire. Thanks for sharing your vision with us!
Very nice - clean everything as advertised - enjoyed our stay

Simple and comfortable.
Our stay was exactly what I was hoping for. The property itself was very clean, simple, and comfortable. Check in and checkout was ridiculously simple. Knowing our host was only a phone all away was assuring but was unnecessary. It was a perfect way to celebrate turning 50 with my twin sister. I would love to return with my husband!

Restful and cozy
We are thankful for the space Shawn has created. We consider ourselves regulars now and plan on many more visits. Shawn is thoughtful, attentive, but leaves one to have their own space. Could not ask for more out of him or the space itself.

I am a degreed professional with a variety of passions and interests. In addition to an engineering career, I have worked in the natural foods industry (various roles over several years at a food co-op), nutritional counseling, and residential construction and interior design. For the past several years, I have been dedicated to the design/build of Green Gate Guest Houses- 10 unique lodging options within the Giants Ridge Recreation Area.
I have a passion for all areas of construction, design, technology, sustainable living, renewable energy, etc., and enjoy putting ideas into action through the myriad of projects I always have going!
I enjoy nature, outdoors, exercise (running, hiking, cycling, skiing, etc), as well as the culture and arts of the city. I've traveled domestically and internationally, and value the insight gained from experiencing new cultures. I often bring back design ideas that are eventually incorporated into various projects around the property. Looking forward to some time in Scandinavia next.
Having operated my vacation rental properties for about a decade now, I have been fortunate to host such a variety of wonderful guests from all over the planet, and have enjoyed being part of the community in my hosting and travels.
Why they chose this property
The log cabin is tiny-living in style, and the best of both worlds as it combines century-old craftsmanship with modern comforts such as infloor heat, power and water...a super-cozy cabin in the woods next to Giants Ridge.
