About the property

Go back in time and enjoy the way things used to be submerged in Nature

This cabin and its sister homes, Casa Inspiracion, Casa Cielo, Rancho el Rio and their newest addition, Panorama, fund all the animal welfare, environmental and social welfare programs their owners run at the Sustainability Demonstration Center depicted in this video

The Center is located along the main route to Monteverde and right now there is a SPECIAL PROMOTION: FREE TOUR of an animal sanctuary, the historic Sustainability Demonstration Center, an Organic Farm, and the surrounding tropical paradise of forest & river! Other special ADVENTURE, CULTURAL, SPANISH LANGUAGE, RURAL, AND NATURAL EXCURSION packages for a unique Costa Rican experience with DISCOUNTS available! Contact us for more details.

ORIGINAL RIVERSIDE FARMHOUSE, 1 minute walk to the river, in a Birder's Paradise with over 100 bird species identified by certified guides: La Granja is another slice of heaven that the owners of Rancho el Rio have just made available to guests.

La Granja and Rancho el Rio sit on 112 acres of a unique combination between nature at its best and a farm with farm animals and crops. You get it all: Over one mile of river front with natural pools, forested trails, mountains with beautiful ocean views, cattle pastures, orchards, and of course, lots of trees, such as palm/coconut, banana, plantain, noni, star fruit, bread fruit, oranges, grapefruit, lemons, passion fruit, mangoes, avocadoes, cashews, are all around.

La Granja is an original farm house, so it rustic. Our farm is organic, so there are some insects. It sits amidst gardens and tall fruit trees, with various types of fowl adorning the patios (they can be noisy at times), the antique home has the traditional tall ceilings, original wood and construction, and open spaces so you feel you are living as farmers lived many years ago, yet with all the amenities: telephone, internet, hot water shower, stove, fridge, fully equipped large kitchen, 2 bedrooms (full and twin beds in the style of bunk beds in each of the two bedrooms, living/dining room with a futon that sleeps two additional guests, towels and linens provided, 1 bathroom. There is a grill (we provide you with free wood for burning).

The weather is magnificent! It is warmer than Monteverde, but not as hot as the beach, so different wildlife can be seen there, such as howler monkeys, iguanas, geckos, salamanders, frogs, tons of birds (herons, birds of prey, parrots, egrets, song birds, toucans, etc.). At night you can build bon fires by the river and even camp there just for fun!

There is a TON of things to do. You can help milk the cow, feed the chickens, geese, turkeys, and fish and tend to and ride the horses, see the sheep, water buffaloes and oxen. The river itself provides hours of fun. Children (and adults!) love to jump off rocks into natural pools and wade around looking at the fish and finding beautiful rocks and tiny creatures. During rainy season, river levels change and there may be times you can not get in the river. There are several traditional games, such as our home-made mechanical bull and other equestrian games. Collecting and eating coyoles (tiny coconut-like fruits that you crack with rocks) and other fruits to make fruit drinks is quite popular too. Night or daytime hikes by foot or on horse- back through the ranch and the surrounding town are a true delight. We have mountain bikes for rent for those who love cycling.

It is located right on your way to Monteverde from either the San Jose or Liberia airports. It is along route 605, 3 km south from the intersections of route 605 and 606.

Coming from the Liberia airport, you would turn left on the road right past the Lagartos Puente (Lagartos Bridge) and go for 11.5 km. , then make a right, and the Ranch´s driveway is along a brown fence, a few meters after you make the turn. To go to Monteverde, you would continue on for another 3 km. then make a slight left and turn onto route 606.

From the San Jose airport you can go 2 ways. Make a right at the Rancho Grande Gas Station and go until you get to El Sol Restaurant, then make a left and go exactly 3 km and make a sharp left, and you are there.

OR… make a right from HWY 1 (Interamerican Highway) onto directly onto route 605 and go 11.5 km., then make a sharp right and you are there.

La Granja is 2 hrs from the Liberia airport and 2.5 hrs from the San Jose airport. It takes 50 mins to get to Monteverde. It is an hour away from a lovely beach, Playa Dona Ana, 1.25 hrs from the Carara National Park and 1.25 hrs from the Los LLanos de Cortez Waterfalls. It is close to the tiny rural community of Guacimal.

In this area of the country people still ride on horse-back to work and get around, use oxen to cart things from place to place and raise cattle... this is the real Costa Rica. There is a tiny restaurant-bar nearby or you can drive 3 km. to a much larger restaurant at the intersection of route 606 and 605. But you can just bring all your food in for the duration of your stay and cook onsite or purchase home-made meals. The kitchen is fully equipped. You can also buy lots of organic dairy products right from the people living nearby, eggs, and many other produce, not to mention eat from what is available at the Rancho. We provide you with free organic coffee for the first morning of your stay as we are coffee producers in Monteverde and want to make sure you have an awesome start to your first morning with us! If you want to purchase more organic coffee for your stay or to take home, you can order it through our food order form.

It has all the amenities: telephone, wi-fi, hot water shower, stove, fridge, fully equipped large kitchen, 2 bedrooms (1 with a double bed and one with bunk beds), living/dining room with a futon that sleeps two additional guests, towels and linens provided, 2 full baths inside. There is a very large covered porch overlooking the river with a swing, a hammock and a sofa-bed, and a smaller one by the front of the house. There is a wood stove for cooking outdoors and a large wood grill (we provide you with free firewood).

About veronica sheehan

Alexander was born in the San Luis Valley in the Monteverde region and has lived all his life here. He started working when he was 11 years old helping his father herd oxen to take milk to the local cheese factory. At the age of 15, he began working for the Children´s Eternal Rain Forest, then he worked for InBio (Instituto Nacional de Biodiversidad) researching snails all over Costa Rica, he then worked for ProNativas, an non-profit organization that promotes the use of native ornamental plants as a conservation effort. He believes in changing the world one person at a time, starting with ourselves.

Veronica was born in Mexico and spent 25 years in the States. She worked as a biologist, then as a licensed clinical social worker in various settings including private practice with people suffering from chronic physical illnesses and hospice care. She arrived in Monteverde a few years ago with her 5 year old son, Stuart. She founded PAWS costarica (Promotion of Animal Wellbeing Society), a non-profit organization to help educate people regarding the responsible and compassionate treatment of animals. She believes, like Alex, in changing the world from the inside (OUR inside) out. Everything we do, our choices and lifestyles sum up to our current state of affairs… we have the power to choose again so we can heal ourselves, our planet and all living beings.

Alexander, Veronica and Stuart run a non-profit Sustainability Demonstration Center nearby and use the income from these houses to support all the initiatives at the Center which are: Animal Welfare, Environmental Protection and Social and Economic Justice. Why veronica sheehan chose Guacimal

We absolutely love the river and that comes with the coolness and beauty of water... We are turining back time to mix the old and the new and create a new future where we measure success not solely on economic terms, but where the wellbeing of the environment, the animals and the people weigh in as heavy as making a profit. We practice organic integrated farming and use rural tourism to support this and many other initiatives for change in this area

What makes this farmhouse unique

It is a beautiful quiet spot (except for the animal noises) where one can reflect and renew amidst nature and connect with a higher part... the beauty surrounding you and the river are very conducive to ease and relaxation and an overall sense of wellbeing

Going back in time

  • 5 of 5

What an amazing place! We felt like we went back to a simpler time. Veronica and Alex are doing amazing things working on helping the people in the area. Their son Stuart is an amazing young man who helped us with suggestions of things to do and informing us of the flora and fauna of the area. We enjoyed authentic food and music at the Saturday market type event. It was small but we enjoyed the Marimba music, watching the locals dance and have fun. We purchased dinner from a local lady that brought it to us, and an incredible massage from Lourdes.... Wow! If you can't handle bugs and farm life, this isn't a place for you.

Rustic Bliss

  • 5 of 5

My family of 7 stayed here for three nights, and we enjoyed every minute of our trip. We stayed in the cabin, which is an open air bunkhouse. The accommodations were rustic... but perfect. Our kids milked the cows, held baby piglets, collected chicken eggs, ran around with the dogs, picked mangoes and bananas, and forgot all about their electronic devices for several days. It was wonderful.

I can't say enough good things about the hosts. They went out of their way to arrange painting lessons with the local artists, tours of the sustainability center, horseback rides on the property, and even dinners cooked by locals and delivered to the cabin. I found them to be not only helpful, but some of the kindest, most genuinely good people I've ever met. I look back fondly at our conversations as some of the high points of our trip.

If you are looking to unplug from the chaotic world for a bit, get (back) in touch with the natural world around you, and don't mind the rustic accommodations, you will have trouble finding a better place to stay. The Monteverde Cloud Forest and nearby activities (ziplines, coffee tours, etc.) are less than a (beautiful) hour's drive away.

We will plan a return visit!

Authentic Tropical Hobby Farm Experience

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed every minute of our three night stay at La Granja. The living space is open air with a cozy hammock that our kids did not want to get out of. We were travelling as a group of 8 (2 families of 4) and fortunately we are close family and used to living together because the sleeping accomodations are in one communal space. We cozied in to our bunks in the screened in double room and listened to the river flowing by. Remember you are on a farm, there are roosters and dogs and even goats making a few sounds in the night as well. Also note, we were there at the beginning of February (dry season) and there were very few bugs, almost none, it was an unexpected relief. We did see lizards and other interesting tropical creatures (tarantulas!) going by and enjoyed the chickens, dogs, pigs, donkeys and horse back riding very much. There were howler monkeys spotted on our horse back ride as well.

We picked yummy organic tangerines and the mango tree is ripening still.

Alex, Stuart and Veronica are wonderful hosts and I recomend this experience to anyone that wants to get off the tourist track and live in a beautiful valley for a few days (or longer). I want to send my kids back to volunteer when they are old enough. Great initiative by this family to bring the community together and promote and teach and share sustainable farming practices.

Final note, if you are there on a Saturday, do not miss the farmers market! It was a highlight for us as the town comes together to eat and listen to music. The lady making fresh empanadas made our day! We also ordered dinner one night made by a local woman and it was so yummy and plentiful- we had leftovers to warm up all week.

Go to La Granja to get away from busses full of tourists and live in rural Costa Rica.

Owner's Response: It is heart-warming that people take the time to write a review and that they do it with so much love. Indeed, it is the real Costa Rica, with its people, nature and animals. The townspeople also rejoyced to see a large international group arrive at the local Saturday Women's market ... it is good to spread the wealth that tourism brings into the country and that very often lands in the hands of very few in the more famous tourist spots. Having people come to the cabin not only give us a way of financially supporting all the endeavors at the Sustainability Demonstration Center, but it also brings positive energy into our personal lives when we see people appreciate the efforts we have made to turn the strictly cattle farm into something more sustainable and fun. We are grateful the world has so many great people.

Wonderful,r local authentic experience

  • 5 of 5

Our family of four stayed at Rancho El Rio for 1 night. Wish we had stayed longer. We had a wonderful visit at the Sustainability Centre with Veronica and her son Stuart. Stuart was an exemplary host, who showed us the animals, and centre, and Veronica shared their struggles over important water activism work they are doing. We were treated to a local meal when we arrived at the house for our stay, greeted by locals who were so friendly and accommodating. We appreciated the local groceries and loved the farm animals wandering everywhere. The house was clean and open aired, with a beautiful outdoor patio and the river was a short walk through a forested trail, where we were greeted by the sounds and local flora of Costa Rica. Swimming in the river was a highlight, which we managed to do a few times, in our short stay. It was truly a local experience. Our kids were thrilled to have an authentic experience, and embraced fully Costa Rican culture. They said it was so much better than staying in a tourist hotel (we agreed). Having the knowledge we were helping local water activists, was a bonus that made our vacation worthwhile and this place worth recommending to other travellers.

Owner's Response: It always makes us feel so thrilled that people wished they had stayed longer. And we also appreciate those who truly enjoy simple living, connecting with nature, sharing their space with all kinds of animals (rescues and farm animals), learning and experiencing the real Costa Rican culture. And yes, indeed, staying at our cabins helps us continue our environmental, animal welfare and social justice work. Thank you!

Authentic; Purposeful; Delightful....Perfect!

  • 5 of 5

We spent 9 nights at the farmhouse and it couldn't have been a better way to see Costa Rica. We had an authentic experience with the community....learning traditional dance, experiencing the farmers market; eating traditional food, hiking and swimming on the well as easy access to Monte Verde and all it has to offer. Cloud forest; coffee and sugar plantation with chocolate processing; bat jungle; zip line; hanging bridges and incredible food served with a heaping helping of welcoming hospitality wherever you go! And Veronica helped a great deal by making recommendations and reservations for us in Monte Verde. It was also important to us to be supporting the great cause of the Sustainability Center. "Pura Vida" is the Costa Rican motto which means "Pure life". Indeed it is! We would go back there in a heartbeat!

Owner's Response: We were delighted to have this family stay for an extended number of days as we got to know them and had conversations about something we all cared about: the environment. They were so very involved with everything in our community and visited local artists and even took and dance class at the Center! Clearly they are very aware of the importance that each visitor plays in the lives of local families in rural communities. They came to the local public market too and mingled with everyone... it was a genuine Costa Rican experience... nothing artificial. They were generous in every sense of the word. They came to experience and enjoy and to contribute to a better world too.
