One of Virginia's Best Kept Secrets
I lived in Northern Virginia for 5 years before stumbling across Highland County last year, and I'm still sad it took me that long.
Our stay at Faraway Farms was amazing and Sue and Bobby are perfect hosts. The cabin was clean and inviting and the property was beyond amazing. When we arrived Sue and Bobby walked down from the house and introduced themselves, made us feel welcome, answered any questions I had, and generally set us up for a great experience.
This property is perfect for anybody who is comfortable being away from their phones and computers for a few days (although they do have a landline in the cabin and WiFi at the main house for guest use if needed). We didn't feel inclined and my kids and I made abundant use of the books, games, and movies in the cabin when we weren't outside exploring or driving around the county. I knew that options would be limited in the area so I brought food to cook and found everything I needed in the kitchen so don't worry about brining pots, pans, or cooking utensils, unless it's a specialty item. There is a general store 5 miles away from the cabin that has some limited groceries if needed, but come prepared. Also, don't expect to be able to use your GPS to find directions while in the area, so either bring your own printed maps or you can utilize the many maps of the area that Sue has in a very helpful welcome binder in the cabin.
Our favorite part of the stay was our walks around the 2-3 miles of well maintained trails on the property with Sue and Bobby's dog Eden, who is the best guide folks could ask for.
Overall I highly recommend this as a great family or couples destination. I look forward to visiting again!
One of the best! Quiet location with excellent facilities and most hospitable owners.....Bob and Sue went out of their way to make sure we had an enjoyable stay. Would recommend this cabin and location to any of my friends or family.
Wonderful vacation for our family of six!
Our family had the best time staying at this cabin! Sue was such a wonderful host and made sure we had all we needed to accommodate our family of six. There was plenty to do for our children ages 4-12, such as walking the trails around the property, feeding and visiting the sheep, and playing with Eden the dog! We visited the Seneca Caverns and recommend the tour and restaurant there. We also walked the trail up to Seneca Rock and our 12-yr-old son said it was his favorite part of the trip!
The kids all slept in the loft area and enjoyed the toys and games provided in the cabin. We enjoyed our private bedroom as well and had a good time cooking and eating in the kitchen. I recommend bringing along groceries, for the market down the road does have limited food options. Make sure you visit the Sugar Maple Country Store - the maple syrup is delicious and the owner will really take his time to explain how he makes the syrup. We even got a tour of his operation and the kids were super-excited!
We enjoyed our stay so much and can’t thank the owners enough for a trip we will always cherish!
Wonderful cabin, beautiful surroundings, great hosts
Our family had a great stay at the cabin. It’s a wonderful, very comfortable cabin heated by a wood stove. Sue and Bobby were super helpful with any help we needed. Our daughter had a great time bottle-feeding one of the new baby sheep, and the hike down to the stream on the property is lovely. Relatively easy drive over into West Virginia for some hiking, and super-easy drive into the local towns.
Exceeded our expectations in every way!
Our family had a wonderful time at the farm. The cabin is very comfortable and so lovely, with all of the amenities of home. We had several wonderful walks around the land and soaked in the mountain air. There were breathtaking views, and so much to see all around us. Sue and Bob are gracious hosts, taking the time to share a bit about the property and animals, and even let our daughter bottle feed a lamb. We made a trip into McDowell, stopping at the Sugar Tree Country Store for some delightful maple treats, and the Highland County Museum at the Mansion House, which was great for us history buffs. It truly was an escape from our city lives, and we hope to come back again for a longer stay next year. Thanks so much, Sue and Bob, for sharing your farm with us!
Great Location, Great People
My family and I stayed in McDowell with Sue and Bobby over the weekend of the Maple Syrup Weekend in Monterrey VA. In short, the main attraction was not the Maple Syrup but the stay. Sue and Bobby have an excellent cabin with a great wood-fired stove and a property they kindly let us have the run of. The hiking trails to the back of their property were scenic and well worth the effort but my favorite was my son's quick friendship with one of the lambs, "Spot". We had a great time and will definitely look at staying again.
25 minutes from Monterey, home to small shops and a few restaurants. 1 hour from the Homestead Resort, 90 min to Snowshoe, Canaan Valley, or Whitegrass.
