Set in three acres of land with an exceptional garden it provides the perfect stress free location for relaxing and unwinding. To the front of Cortijo Opazo the land drops away towards the valley of the Rio Trevelez, then rises steeply to the summits of La Corona and El Lujar; whilst behind us the terrain ascends beyond the local villages to the mountain peaks of the Sierra Nevada. The surrounding ancient terraces are populated by goats or planted with olives, almonds and vegetables. Cortijo Opazo has an delightful garden, full of exotic plants, trees and shrubs seldom found in this area, providing you a freedom of space to enjoy as you please. From the south facing verandah of Cortijo Opazo the entrance to La Corona leads in to an open plan living accommodation. This is a spacious area with a three seater leather sofa, two arm chairs, a large dinning table, four dining chairs, a well stocked bookcase and a log burning stove. There is a small television that receives Spanish channels only but has a CD/DVD player. Games and DVDs also available.

Throughout the accommodation the floors have been finished in warm terracota ceramic tiles. There is an underfloor heating system in all areas, the use of which is included in the rental. During most of the year the days are warm enough for t-shirts and light clothing but since the area is mountainous the evenings and early mornings in the cooler months can be chilly and we have found the heating system invaluable. The log burning stove is provided as a cosy luxury and a limited quantity of logs will be supplied on arrival - more can be obtained locally.
La Corona is situated to the front of Cortijo Opazo and has a glorious south facing covered verandah (known locally as a tinao) with expansive views out over the valley of the Rio Trevelez and across the summit of La Corona to the mountains of the Contraviesa. Outdoor tables, chairs and sun-loungers allow guests to take full advantage of this splendid location. The private patio area leads on to the delightful communal garden where there is plenty of space for you to find your own secluded corner.

La Corona is ideal for a couple.
Robert and William live at Cortijo Opazo all year round and spend most of their days either working in the garden, on the vegetable plot or preparing the accommodation for guests. When not doing one of these activities they might be found walking in the valleys and mountains that surround the house with their two dogs, Oska and Ella.
In 2003 they left rewarding jobs in the UK, one as a teacher and the other as a garden designer, and have enjoyed the challenge of creating a life in a new and welcoming country. Now, they can't imagine living anywhere else.
Robert King purchased this apartment in 2002
The Alpujarras is a very special area that captivates visitors with its charm. When you visit you will quickly understand why we chose to live here. It has a strong and particular cultural identity, the people who live here are proud of their heritage, a heritage that is still strongly in evidence and in daily use. Whilst quite cosmopolitan in terms of the number of different nationalities that live here the Alpujarras is very firmly Spanish and it would be impossible to imagine this ever changing. Tourism is very welcome but it is not an area of dead holiday homes, it is a place where people live, work and enjoy life.
There is everything you need here: food, water, humanity and the beauty of the Sierra Nevada. The decision to live here was a quick and easy one.
What we enjoy about living at Cortijo Opazo, besides the dramatic views, is the fact that we are situated in the countryside half way between the villages of Pitres and Portugos, being 1.5km from each. As such, we can easily 'pop out' to the shops and enjoy a drink at one of the bars without having to use the car.
Ensuring that our guests have the best possible holiday is how we earn an income. So, whilst making sure visitors have all the privacy they could wish for, we are available to give you any information you may need and generally to make sure the accommodation is in the best order possible. This extends to our garden. We are horticultural enthusiasts and work outside every day to create a very special place for relaxation.
"We've been to the Alpujarras many times and have finally found the perfect place to stay, the spot is idyllic and the accommodation superb." - La Familia Bartolomé, Madrid.
"Thank you for your hospitality, recommendations and advice, we have had a great week. The cortijo is fantastic, as too is the location. It has exceeded all our expectations and we look forward to returning" - Russell and Bethan, UK.
"Wonderful setting, highest possible standards and fittings in the apartment and the perfect, attentive but unobtusive hosts" - Linda and Elwyn, UK
"Thanks for the info. on suggested walks, eating places etc. Everything about this holiday has been just perfect. Hope to return again" - Ann and Ian, UK
We had a lovely week staying at Cortijo Opazo, the property was clean and comfortable with everything we needed in the kitchen. We particularly enjoyed the private terrace where many hours were spent eating, drinking and reading. The gardens were a joy to wander around and we felt very well looked after by the owners. We were particularly grateful to the walking routes that were provided as they took us confidently into the mountains which we enjoyed. We were travelling by motorbike which added an element of excitement as the roads were spectacular to travel on! A great base for exploring the Alpujarras .
Up high in the mountain, the cottage was very comfortable with some very beautiful sceneries. The property has an amazing garden too. Robert offered us a welcome drink and attended to our stay whenever we had any queries. The recommendations for the local restaurants was also very useful. We loved the occasional visits from the two little dogs! ( very well behaved and they won't enter the house if you don't encourage them). I am glad that I found this quaint cottage. Will return again.
This was without doubt exactly what we needed for a relaxed de-compression time after a strenuous year at work, a house move, and our wedding. The apartment was nicely laid out and equipped (with a varied and interesting selection of books); the shaded terrace allowed for out-door living, the garden was a lovely addition - places to sit and read, or have a drink; and the setting was perfect - just the sound of sheep and goats (and sheepdogs sometimes!) and very few cars passing. Robert and William are gracious hosts who made sure that everything was going to be right for us - and also great cooks.... We will for sure be back.
Have recently stayed in this warm and cosy apartment in Cortijo Opazo. We so enjoyed our stay; when weather was cold outside we were really comfortable within and when the sun shone, the view from our terrace was unequalled. Hikes, using literature prepared by our hosts William and Robert, were quite superb and took us on routes other guides did not include, and so it proved to be an excellent centre. The real bonus for us was to find fan-lipped orchids in the paddock area - what a joy, and the meet and greeters, Ella and Oska, made us feel really at home.
We enjoyed a wonderful week at Cortijo Opazo in mid-September. The setting could not be more beautiful and peaceful. Our apartment was comfortable, well stocked and very tastefully decorated. We enjoyed two dinners prepared by William and wish we had planned to have more - great food and excellently prepared; guests should definitely plan to eat some meals right there on the patio. The hiking guides that William and Robert have prepared are excellent with essential details that will help even the worse navigator find their way. We highly recommend a stay at Cortijo Opazo and hope to return for another visit in the future.
We loved absolutely everything about Cortijo Opazo.... Set on a hillside with dramatic views of the beautiful mountains opposite, we woke to the sound of running water and the bells of the goat herd grazing below and wonderful vistas of the spectacular garden that William and Robert have created. Our accommodation was neat, immaculately clean and the attention to detail second to none. From the hairdryer and the lavender bags in the bedroom drawers, the large bookcase stuffed with interesting books, board games and a pair of binoculars to a brilliant and comprehensive 'House Book' detailing places to visit and restaurants to dine in. Our fridge was filled with welcoming comestibles and cold drinks and the guys made every effort to make us feel at home. We won't ever forget the morning coffees on our private terrace festooned with grapes, the gigantic blooms of the agapanthus and the leaning spires of hollyhocks set against the majestic backdrop of the EL Lujar and La Corona mountains... nor watching the brilliant stars in a midnight sky above a silent valley.
Robert and William are perfect hosts... Discrete yet to hand when we needed any information on the area, they have achieved the impossible... Seven hundred years on from the creation of the Generalife at the Alhambra, the province of Andalucia has another paradise garden awakening in its midst.

Orgiva is the closest town of any significant size and is about 40 mins away. Local villages of Pitres and Portugos are within walking distance (1.5km) and have a variety of shops, banks, bars and restaurants. The Alpujarras is a wonderful place for a holiday and for relaxing generally. It is ideal for walking and offers a vast range of options from challenging high level snow line walks to casual meanderings around the valley. Wherever you go you are accompanied by the sound of water, either from the racing Rio Trevelez and Rio Poqueira, or from the innumerable irrigation channels delivering water to the cultivated land. It is a unique area, treasured by the Moors until they were expelled by the Christians in the 15th century, and still shows many signs of their occupation. Most notably the style of Berber architecture, little white box houses with flat grey roofs supported by sturdy chestnut timbers.
Many people choose to use this area as a base for visiting the city of Granada and the magical Alhambra palace, or for day trips to the coast, but many more are content simply to relax and unwind, enjoying one of the most tranquil holiday spots in Europe. Every season has something special to offer in an area famed for its array of wild flora and fauna. Other activities you can pursue here include painting, horse riding, paragliding, canyoning, guided walks, cycling, sitting, thinking and mellowing. There are a variety of restaurants around including two vegetarian establishments. There are local produce markets, bakeries, a travelling greengrocery van and a fish van to meet all needs. Once you are here, there's no need to leave.
