About the property

Country Cottage in Lustleigh, Nr. Newton Abbot, Devon - Quiet Location Between Dartmoor And The Sea

Originally believed to have been a refuge and overnight halt for cattlemen bringing their herds off the moor on their way to market, Ivy Cottage lies between Packsaddle bridge over the Wrey Brook and Drakeford Bridge over the River Bovey. Ivy Cottage is built of stone and cob and has been considerably upgraded over the years! In the main living room we installed a wood-burning stove a few years ago. This is a great success, warms up very quickly and gives off a terrific heat. Other heating is by newly-installed wall-mounted electric radiators. The well-tended quiet garden is a real suntrap. The cottage is just outside Lustleigh village (with pub!), a 5 minute drive or 20 minute walk. Dartmoor is readily accessible, either walking, or by car to Widecombe and Princeton. The sea is about half an hour away. There are so many different places to go!

About The Owner

My family originated in Devon (Beare is a common local surname) and the cottage has been in our family since the 1920's. We mainly keep the cottage for family use - we are spread around the country now - but let it out for short lets. I am a professional in financial services working in London. Our eldest son Jamie, was married in Lustleigh church in September 2010, so the close family connection with the village has not been lost!

Why The Owner chose Lustleigh

Dartmoor has a special feel to it. The higher moors are wild and can be bleak during winter. There are lots of steep valleys with their own microclimates with pretty churches, old bridges, pubs and quietness. The situation of Ivy Cottage is arcadian, a rural idyll. If you are thinking of writing a book, this is the place to make a start!

Guestbook comments from the owner

We'd just like to say thank you for sharing your gorgeous little cottage with us! It was perfect! I couldn't imagine a nicer place to stay for our holiday, we even had a visiting badger and a buzzard come to see us!

Its location is great, and perfect for what we wanted - the piece & quiet of the devonshire countryside but with the fun of the seaside only 30mins away!

We had a lovely walk into lustleigh & enjoyed a really nice meal at the Cleave Pub, and we took a walk round the local woodland walk too, aswell as going on the Paignton Steam train, Goodrington sands for crabbing & sandcastle building, Dawlish for cream teas, Becky Falls....and loads more, not forgetting the beautiful moors with the wild ponies!

I would be more than happy to recommend Ivy Cottage to friends and family (although I really want to keep it for myself). Mrs M. October 2012

Charming cottage, charming area

  • 3 of 5

Lovely cottage in a lovely area, river runs around the cottage giving a peaceful atmosphere, flowers everywhere, nice walks in the area, friendly happy people living in the villages. The house was very moldy / musty, most likely from flooding, found it hard to breathe inside the house. Found myself leaving and checking into a hotel after a week, for many reasons, one of which is, the house was very creepy and night. I had rented this cottage for 2 months, but only ended up staying there for 3 weeks, as I had to check into a hotel, to get away from the spooky nights, I didn't sleep or rest there at all. I asked the owner to refund me the difference, since I had to check into a hotel, and he never got back to me. So it was a little disappointing to be honest. If you aren't afraid of spooky energy, and you aren't affected by mold, then this place is super cute!

A lovely old fashioned cottage with a stream outside and loads of great walks.

  • 4 of 5

Yes it smelt damp and there were spiders in the kitchen cupboards, and cobwebs on the windows but we all loved it! All my children ages 7-15 thought it was super. A little bit of Dartmoor history. Very peaceful. Would love to stay in the summer months . The wood burner was great with plenty of logs and the rooms all warm as there was electric radiators in each room. The kitchen dated but we love the old style. I cooked for 6 of us without any problem. Such a shame it's not lived in permanently. The gateway was just about manageable as I've got a 9 seater van so just be aware! No off property parking but plenty in the meadow.. Nice to have welcome pack on arrival. If you enjoy peace and quiet, walks to the pub and moorland then this is the place although slightly overpriced I think, compared to other places on Dartmoor, but you wouldn't get the same experience. Definitely would stay again.

Overpriced and needs updating

  • 2 of 5

Potentially a charming cottage, but was extremely damp and shabby. The bedroom downstairs furnished with bunk beds and not much else was presumably intended for children. The walls had rising damp and the room smelt. Totally unsuitable for children. The sitting room was cosy, if rather shabby. The kitchen was unpleasant, again damp with old appliances. The upstairs bedrooms were OK. The bathroom was very dated. The one redeeming feature was the garden, which was rather overgrown but lovely. We felt that with a little tender loving care this cottage could be delightful, and retain its character. Sadly, we will not be returning, despite the lovely location.

Beautiful cottage in idyllic surroundings!

  • 4 of 5

My family and I have just spent four days in this cosy cottage which is tucked away in a very beautiful part of Devon. We loved it's charm and even lit the wood burner in the evenings. There is a woodland walk only a few minutes away that has the most amazing views! I definitely would recommend this property to anyone who enjoys an older style country home and beautiful countryside!

Charming from outside disappointing inside

In need of TLC and improvements I understand it's close to the river and it's an old house

But the smell of damp and damp patches on the wall makes the house not worth the money we paid for it in fact I would like to ask for a refund

Owner's Response: We are always interested in comments from our guests and take careful note of any criticism or suggestions. We spend money each year on upgrading as our regular users will confirm. We are sorry that the cottage did not meet the expectations of the guests this time. I believe that it was a damp weekend that they for their 3 day stay. As it happens I am now staying at the cottage for a week with my wife and our 2 dogs. We love it here, and have not been aware of a particular smell of damp, however we are all different. (The real high point of my week so far is seeing a pair of kingfishers race down the stream next to the cottage and return a minute or two later).
