Hi, I am Kathy, owner of the VIlla Katerina. My early ancestors were pioneers of the 'Silk Road' from China to Constantinople and the name Metaxas comes from 'Metaxi', the Greek word for silk. After the fall of Constantinople in the 11th century, they are believed to have settled in the area of Kefalonia. There the core family remained. Some toiled the land, others became doctors or joined the priesthood. But the prosperity of the family, as was common in Kefalonia, came from shipping. My great-grandfather, grandfather and many uncles were ships' Captains and in the late 19th century, shipowners. I was brought up in the UK and I have visited Kefalonia most summers for over 50 years. I have seen Kefalonia change from an island with no tourism to how it is today, where warm hospitality is offered to tourists within a beautiful and authentic backdrop .
Kathy purchased this Villa in 1949
Why Kathy chose Leivathos
My great grandfather built the original house on the current estate and lived there until the grand old age of 104. My grandfather built the current house in the 1950s. The beautiful and peaceful surroundings have not only supported longlevity but also inspired intellectual creativity. Lord Byron spent some time there when he was writing his famous ‘Don Juan’. Both my grandfather and my father have written and published books while spending time there. For me, the Villa Katerina holds a lifetime of memories. When it came to me, I decided to restore it to its former glory. While incoroporating all the modern day comforts that you would expect to find in a luxury accommodation, I tried to keep the traditional elegance of original features.
What makes this Villa unique
Villa Katerina is now a luxury property that boasts all the fixtures and fittings that you would expect today. It has the high-ceilinged, large rooms typical of older buildings giving a beautiful sensation of space. The extensive space, both indoors and the on external terraces, allow larger groups holidaying together to spread out or spend time together as the mood takes them. Villa Katerina is nestled in three acres of private grounds. Landscaped gardens lead into the stunning swimming pool area, and into other areas where there are orchards or simply quiet spots where our guests can wonder and relax. I have memories of childhood holidays – my grandmother serving lunch after a morning spent on the beach and my grandfather playing his guitar under a blanket of stars on the veranda in the evening. Recently, I have taken pride watching my own children restore part of the old garden. While Villa Katerina is quiet and secluded, I have never got bored or felt isolated there – good beaches, shopping facilities, restaurants etc are all within easy reach. And I never cease to wonder at the beauty of our views.
