The Bartram Trail is less than five mins. away and offers beautiful scenery with great hiking. Horseback riding nearby. Truly a relaxing and memorable getaway. Plenty to do nearby, or plenty to keep you occupied if you don't want to leave the property. Due to our remote location, we do not get a cell signal in the chalet. (We do at the gas station and marina approx. 5 mins. away.) We have a landline with free long distance in the continental U.S. and an answering machine. It is not necessary to have a four wheel drive vehicle. Absolutely no smoking inside the chalet, please.

About John Bickerstaff

My wife, Melissa, and I are both native Floridians. We own a floor covering business and live in Central Florida. We have three amazing children and have spent many wonderful times with them in our mountain home.

John Bickerstaff purchased this cabin in 2004

Why John Bickerstaff chose Topton

We had been vacationing in the Nantahala area for years and decided we wanted our own retreat for our family there.

What makes this cabin unique

We don't think you will find more incredible and beautiful long-range mountain views anywhere in the area. Sitting in our rockers or soaking in our hot tub while taking in those views in the quiet and peaceful surroundings is simply a little taste of heaven.

The house had everything we needed and then some.

The property was very peaceful and there was plenty to do both inside and out. The rope swing was to die for. Comfortable beds and everything we need for cooking. Would definitely recommend and come again!

House was beautiful, full of amenities.

  • 3 of 5

Follow provided directions very carefully. No gps or cell service so you will get lost. Took us an extra hour to find. Property is located at the top of a ridge and is not an easy drive. 4x4 is not required but highly recommended, very steep grade on the ride in and grade was iced over most of our trip "pretty scetchy to say the least" if you arent use to mountainous terrains/driving would not attempt. Property is beautiful cabin was well maintained and stocked. If you like adult beverages bring your own because they are hard to locate. Approximately 20 mins to Andrews which is a small to but does have dollor store and groceries. We enjoyed the trip over all and got snow christmas eve night. Temps stayed in the 30s. Lots of fun things to do in the area. Really enjoyed the trip.

Great time in the woods

Thank God for Michelle and John who provided us with a beautiful home to stay. The home has a fully equipped kitchen-just bring your groceries. A separate small refrigerator, microwave and coffee maker down in the play room. That was perfect because the kids didn't have to come up to the main floor for drinks or snacks. The playroom has a pool table and arcade machine that we all enjoyed. It brought back childhood memories playing Ms. PacMan and Galatica all night long. Also there's a porch at this level with beautiful mountain views. In the downstairs is a full bathroom and bedroom with 2 full size beds and a pull out sofa. The mattress in the pull out sofa does need a good cleaning. We found stains and food all over it.

The main floor has a great kitchen, large bedroom with a twin bed and queen bunk beds, full bathroom, dining area, living room and full washer and drier. The views are absolutely spectacular from this level. There's also a full wrap around porch with rocking chairs and jaccuzzi tub to take in the beautiful mornings and evenings with a good cup of coffee. There are board games for the kids to play and a great swing where we spent countless hours. We hiked all around the property but never saw any wildlife. Just breath taking mountain views.

Above the main level is a loft with a king size bed and full bathroom and full closet. We woke up to stunning views of the mountains right from the bed. Lack of privacy in this bedroom is the only issue. We never had a problem with water pressure in any of the bathrooms but just took turns bathing because we were 10 people.

The closest grocery store is Ingles in Andrews. There's a Walgreens and McDonalds also right next door. It took us about 25 minutes to get there. Small quaint little town. If you keep driving another 20 minutes you get to a Super Walmart and other stores.

I highly recommend this beautiful home with all the amenities you could want. A gas grill would just put it over the top. The charcoal grill is small especially for a large group like us and we got wet grilling since it rained most days. The internet is spotty but we were glad since the kids could disconnect and actually experience nature. The drive up the mountain is steep and not paved all the way to the home but we followed the 5-10 MPH rule and had no problems getting to it. Thank your wonderful neighbor for us.

Thank you once again Melissa and John. We loved your home and hope to return one day

We loved Bear Rock Chalet!! Absolutely beautiful and clean!

  • 5 of 5

The cabin was beautiful and clean! We loved the view of the Smokies from the hot tub! The kitchen was well equipped which provided the ability to make some great meals without having to pack and bring half of your own kitchen utensils. My grandchildren loved the rope swing and the arcade games and we all enjoyed the pool table. The satellite TV was great because we got to watch The Crimson Tide play and win(ROLL TIDE!!!) Saturday night!! Just 30 mins from Endless River Adventures who hosted our annual rafting trip down the Nantahala River. It was just a short drive down to the lake which was breathtakingly beautiful. Thank you so much for the stay! We really enjoyed it!

Get here to get away

  • 5 of 5

I've just completed my stay at Bear Rock during the eclipse week, and everything was awesome! If for some reason you want a lake view from your rental, then no, you will not see that at this property. Get over it!

What you will experience are some mountain views, and trees and very little noise, other than the wonderful wildlife that surrounds you at this house. I'm a hiker, and there are several 5,000 plus peaks in the area, and of course, the AT trail. Hike; get out and drive; raft the Nantahala river; kayak the lake; climb Boetler Mt if you can - no one goes there, and it is a view worth the sweat! Come back to Bear Rock in the evening and appreciate its seclusion and the peace and relaxation it will provide you.

A couple of peeps mention in their reviews that the house was a little bit of a challenge to find for the first time, but the owners have plainly explained how to navigate the mountain community, and their directional signage is posted exactly where they have stated. Drive slow going up, and just chill ;)

Everything the owners have listed about their mt home is true and accurate. There are 3 levels, with stairs, but the main floor bedroom has a bunk and a twin, and I'm pretty sure the living room on that level has at least 1 pull out sofa sleeper. The master is up one level with a nice wakeup view of a southerly mt range. Downstairs is a bedroom with 2 full beds, and again, probably a sleeper sofa. The pool table and gaming machine are on this level, too, and it's the best access point for getting to the fire pit and the hammock. The deck areas on this lower floor and the main, mid-level floor are large, and you will find out that you will be out there a lot! Especially on the mid-level deck, where a hot tub - in excellent condition - awaits!

It's awesome in the NC mountains, no matter what season you visit. This house is a first-rate base camp. The owners are good people, and I am sure they can answer any questions you may ask ahead of time, but rest assured that their home will be a place of comfort, freeing you to focus on the beauty and culture of this part of NC.

Best wishes to you in your travels!

Great peaceful getaway place!

  • 5 of 5

Home is lovely and spacious. Owners reply back right away with questions. It rained the weekend we were there so didn't get to enjoy the wrap around patio with gorgeous view. Would have loved to have sipped coffee in the cute rocking chairs! We all enjoyed the pool table which was used the entire weekend. The house was very clean and beds were comfortable. The bathroom shampoo/conditioner packs were a bonus since I forgot to pack mine!! Also, owners gave us recommendations on area restaurants which was very helpful. Would definitely recommend this place to friends and family!
