About Cheryl Hillis

My brothers & my husband had shared a vision of expanding my fathers buffalo ranch when additional property became available to purchase. With all our knowledge & experiences combine we have built 4 log homes & have been renting them out since 2004. Once my husband retires from the US Army in about 5 yrs our dream will be to build our log cabin on the property & be more hands on. God has blessed us beyond our wildest dreams. We hope you love the mountains like we have all come to love being transplants from a very flat NY!

Cheryl Hillis purchased this cabin in 2015

Why Cheryl Hillis chose Clyde

My father had a love for trains & it was his idea to purchase the cabooses & turn them in to vacation rentals, We thought it would be very cool to tie in w/ the bison. Kind of gives it an 'ol western feel! Most folks think you have to go out west to see bison & they are surprised to find a herd in the Smoky Mountains of NC!

What makes this cabin unique

While staying at in our 1960's restored caboose we feel you will really enjoy the peace & tranquility of being secluded on 65 acres. The children will just love looking out the windows & literally seeing the bison roaming out in the pasture!

Another great amenity is the kids being able to "unplug" & take a hike to our custom designed playground as well as seeing the miniature horse, buffalo, goats & llamas.

You Won't Find a More Interesting Place to Stay

  • 5 of 5

My daughter and I spent one night here and had a great stay. We met Cheryl and her dad Harold and several of their family members because there was a party going on when we arrived. They were all sweet and welcoming and gave us permission to walk all over the property. There is good hiking and many farm animals to meet. We sat outside on the lawn chairs at night and watched fireflies and a bison who was running in the dark. It was so comfortable and inviting, and we fit just fine in the caboose. Cheryl's family has done amazing work on this caboose--it is well appointed inside and truly easy to stay in. It's like a tiny, chic city apartment, only it's a tiny, chic country train car. This is a great place for kids of any age. You will be impressed with this place and the kind family who runs Buffalo Creek Vacations.

Great "get away" spot for kids, or just a couples retreat...

  • 5 of 5

If you are into relaxing in a very unique setting, this is IT! The restoration and repurposing project on the caboose is amazing. Very well thought out and detail oriented. Especially the heated bath area floor.

Very clean and well organized throughout the entire unit. Kitchen was equipped with most anything one would need for cooking a meal.

Furniture is very comfortable an well maintained.

The weather was VERY cold, so we were not able to spend time on the large patio deck..... BUT, it was a great time to build a nice bonfire in the fire pit.

The animals that are there are well worth the drive alone! Very cool to be able to stand only feet away from a massive North American Bison. The rest of the animals have their own personalities as well. It was fun to watch the chickens, llamas, goats and horse get along very well!!

If you did decide to leave the ranch, it is a short distance to go antique hunting, rafting, eating, enjoying the beautiful area,or what ever you like...

We will certainly be back to visit in the warm weather.

Great job to Cheryl and her family .....the hard work is greatly appreciated.

Great Stay! Unique Accomodations!

  • 5 of 5

Our family loved staying the weekend in the Caboose! The interior is very accommodating and roomy. I love the renovations that were made to the inside. Very modern feel. We also enjoyed petting the goats and feeding them. Buffalo Creek Vacations (Cheryl) provided us with thorough check in and check out procedures! Cant wait until the other Caboose's are renovated! Looking forward to coming back in the fall!!!
