Homely cabin, ideal for trips to Grand Canyon and surrounds

  • 4 of 5

We travelled from Australia to see the Grand Canyon and chose Raccoon Ranch as our accommodation. I am so pleased that it was our choice because it was definitely the best accommodation around. Situated in a pleasant forest neighbourhood, the cabin is very comfortable and well stocked. It is an easy 50mins drive to the Grand Canyon. We had a wonderful week at the cabin, visiting the Grand Canyon three times, as well as a trip to the petrified forest, painted desert, walnut canyon, and Flagstaff. We enjoyed the cabin so much that we had a full day, and a half-day, where we just chilled at the cabin itself, reading on the deck, watching squirrels and chipmunks, sipping wine, and firing up the barbie (as we say in Australia). We were surprised that a fully equipped laundry did not include an iron and ironing board, and the rules posted inside and outside the cabin were a bit intrusive. We also found a load of towels inside the clothes dryer and no towels set up in the upstairs bathroom. The cargo train's constant tooting throughout the night was a surprise, but the earplugs supplied did the trick. By day, the train's tooting was rather quaint. All in all, we had a very memorable stay.

Owner's Response: We are glad you had a great trip and found the cabin to be a great place to stay. As you say, it's situated perfectly to enjoy a large number of attractions and places to go, and it's a great place to just hang out. We would like to address your perceived shortcomings. We hadn't had anybody find the lack of an iron and board to be an issue in the middle of the forest before - so far, everybody has been determined to be casual while they stayed. Sometimes the cleaning staff will leave the towels in the dryer when they run out of time, and normally leave a note. We do post the rules in the cabin, but they are there to make sure you don't run into anything that ruins your stay - information about water, trash handling, etc. (in case animals come around) Finally, we are sorry the train disturbed you. Some people come especially to enjoy the nostalgic train sounds. We understand light sleepers might need something - it is so incredibly quiet at night that the train sounds are clear. So, as you mention, we provide soft ear plugs, and we also put white noise generators in the bedrooms.

Beautiful and convenient location for our needs

  • 4 of 5

We arrived at Racoon Ranch to find a generally clean, and very comfortable home. We were 6 adults staying (parents, 2 children and their spouses) and wanted a central location to different areas in Arizona. We hiked 3 days at the Grand Canyon's south rim, kayaked at Lake Powell and Antelope Canyon, rafted on the Colorado River, hiked/toured lower Antelope Canyon, and visited Flagstaff and Sedona. The minimum drive to most of these locations was an hour, but the location of Racoon Ranch allowed us to do all of these activities. Wifi was adequate when only one person was using it, but was too slow to handle multiple users or more complex websites. We wish we had realized prior to our arrival that there was a recommendation to boil our drinking water since we would have added jugs of water to our grocery list. We would gladly return here for another vacation! (And we loved the nearby cows, too!)

Owner's Response: We are glad you had such a great time, and got to do so many things during your visit! For reference' sake, I'll note that we do provide a ton of information before our guests arrive - including information about the water (it's from a municipal source, but it's trucked in, so we can't guarantee it's perfectly sterile) and the internet service (we are in the woods and definitely at the edge of the internet. It's good for email and basic browsing, but generally not enough to stream video).

Great cabin. Well-maintained. Very comfortable. A lot of space!

  • 5 of 5

My wife and 2 kids really enjoyed the cabin! Williams is a neat little town - very reminiscent of Gatlinburg, TN. It's in a great location - just about 50 mi. south of the Canyon. If you like trains, which I do, then there are many picture opportunities!

Excellent atmosphere if it wasn't for those dang trains!

  • 4 of 5

I was looking for a place to bring my family, sister, and father for a few nights near the Grand Canyon. My father loves the outdoors and I wanted to stay somewhere other than a hotel so that we could all socialize at the end of the day. This cabin was almost perfect. My father loved being out in the woods. The space holds 10 people -- just be sure to look around and you'll find a pull out bed under the couch and a futon mattress upstairs to sleep on. It has all the comforts of home. Water pressure and the water heater was no problem--actually better than my own home!

The only distraction is that there are probably 4-7 trains which pass a nearby crossing and must blow their horns very loudly through the night. If you are a deep sleeper, probably no problem. Light sleepers like me had some issues but nothing I couldn't eventually deal with. The owner provides ear-plugs but I think that would be rather uncomfortable to use while sleeping. We used the cabin during the summer so all windows were open. I am guessing that the trains would be less of an issue during the winter when you would normally have your windows closed.

If you need food/supplies, the city of Williams is about a 10-15 minute drive, so not a big deal. Just stock up plenty and you'll have no problem. When we first drove to Williams to buy groceries, we saw all the local activities (e.g. bar, restaurants, etc.) and thought maybe we made a mistake and should have stayed there. BUT, once we got back to the cabin, we changed our mind and really appreciated the size of the cabin, the privacy, and being in nature.

The Grand Canyon is about an hour drive from the cabin. However, we took a day tour and the tour bus picked us up in Williams. Easy-peezy.

Overall, it's a great place to stay with a family and friends. My only suggestion is that if you MUST sleep in a very quiet place, you may want to give it some thought.

Owner's Response: We are happy you had a great time. We love the cabin and the setting as well. One of the neat things about it is just how quiet it really is at night out in the woods. Against that, the trains get noticeable if you are a light sleeper. For our guests who are light sleepers, we provide white noise machines along with soft ear plugs. We are 2 miles from the crossing, and it's a federal regulation that the trains must blow their whistles at the crossing. Some people enjoy the nostalgic sound of distant train whistles. It's even an option on some of the white noise machines.
