Overview

About the property

Private cabin in the trees built in the early 1900s has been upgraded but retains all its original charm. Watch eagles fly at eye level, clouds roll in, sunsets and moonsets in the ocean. Bobcats, wild turkeys, and deer regularly walk through the property. Decorated by owner with antiques and comfortable furniture, large view deck for grilling and sitting in the sun, sauna. Fully equipped kitchen, charcoal grill, tv, dvd player. Three bedrooms each with a queen or full bed, two couches could accommodate kids. Short drive from hiking, the Palomar Observatory, fishing at Lake Henshaw, entertainment at Harrah's Rincon Casino. Wonderful place to spend a snowy weekend, but 4 wheel drive and chains are needed on the few occasions when snow is deep.

About Chuck Black

Biologist in San Diego.

Chuck Black purchased this house in 1995

Why Chuck Black chose San Diego County

Poor old cabin was falling down.... but with incredible view, nestled in big green trees. See the scrapbook of the 2+ years it took to bring back from near-death. Upgraded, but kept as much of the old feel and charm as possible.

What makes this house unique

Clouds and view are always changing. Santa Ana nights after storms, you can see the waves breaking on Catalina Island in the full moon. Moonless nights, you can see the Milky Way even with all the city lights below. Great place to take kids for their first snow.

Superb cabin on a beautiful mountain.

  • 5 of 5

I stayed up at this great cabin for a week in summer and it was the highlight of my eight week holiday in California from Australia. I like homes that have a sense of history and character and this place had both plus a special charm factor. The location was super with privacy, quietude and good views. It was an excellent spot for star gazing with decks wrapping around three sides. I was up there during a couple of days of summer heat wave but at about 5000 feet elevation it was maybe 10F cooler then the valley below and downstairs stayed really cool. Going down the steps was like walking into air conditioning due to excellent passive cooling from the floor circulated by ceiling fans combined with no direct hot sun coming in despite being well lit by all the windows. The nights cooled off enough later to use the sauna which is great. All three bedrooms had comfy beds and newish clean sheets and towels.

Chuck was easy to book with communicating with quick and pleasant messages.

On the critical side there was a shortage of wild life for an Aussie with no snakes, no mountain lions, no bears and no big foots to be found anywhere around the cabin or on the numerous forest hikes I did around Palomar Mountain The cabin may not be the best spot for someone with severe OCD and a fetish for sterile modern architecture and minimalist decor but someone like that surely wouldnt book into a charming wooden mountain cabin anyway.

Overall this was a five star stay for me and I left rejuvenated in body, mind and spirit.

Gorgeous views - peaceful and quiet retreat

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay in this rustic mountain cabin! There are incredible views from the deck and it was great to be able to bring our dogs and have a fully fenced deck for them to enjoy the outdoors with us. The cabin itself is cozy and rustic with comfortable beds and seating. We enjoyed local hikes on the Pacific Crest Trail as well as touring the Palomar Hale Observatory.

Stunning

  • 5 of 5

My family and I spent an amazing weekend at this wonderful property. The views are spectacular, as advertised. The air up on the mountain is clean and quiet. The accommodations were exactly what we were looking for in a cabin stay. My two children loved looking at the variety of birds from the deck. Chuck was very friendly and welcoming to communicate with. My next trip to San Diego will include another trip to this spot!

Very nice cabin

  • 4 of 5

Overall my trip was good. Small pety things that werent any fault of Chuck. First we will start with Chuck, great communication and very responsive. Nothing bad to say about him. The cabin was dusty...but its a cabin up in the mountains, its gonna be dusty. I was traveling with clean freaks so they did start wiping stuff down immediately...lol...but I don't consider it being dusty any fault of Chucks, like I said, its a cabin. Cell reception sucked, which I honestly thought was a plus. Got the kids out moving around. There was Wi-Fi but wasnt the greatest, but I wasn't concerned about that. It did get warm (it was the end of July) but not horrible. Chuck did warn me that there was no a.c. and offered a refund, when I found out. There was alot of furniture in the living room area making it feel crowded, we moved a couple chairs out while we were there to give a little more room (I apologize now if we didnt put them back where they were. I couldn't remember exactly how it was). There was also alot of rugs, too many I think, but I have a feeling that durning the winter they help keep the cabin warm, so I think there was actually a purpose for them. Light switches galore, there were a lot of light switches. I have no clue what most of them went to as I was trying them. I also couldn't find the switch for the outside lights. I did not contact Chuck about this because it wasn't a huge deal. The darkness was better for the stars. If I would have contacted him I'm very confident he would have told me which switches they were. The only other thing is the cabin looks like it could use a little tlc. The deck had some loose boards, loose hand rail in spots, just looks like it needs a little love. All and all these are just small nitpick things that didnt ruin or make us uncomfortable. I would definately recommend this rental. I would shoot more for the winter though. Couple last things, make sure you stop at the grocery before going. Looking at 45 minute drive to the closest store, but the drive up and down the mountain is beautiful! Pretty steep and windy but very nice. You can find videos of the drive on youtube. People go there just for the drive! Like I said I do recommend this place but be prepared to slightly rough it. I wohld like to go back in the winter if Chuck would have me again. Thanks.

Owner's Response: Yes, there are a lot of lights, but I've never had guests leave with so many lights on, ceiling fans on high speed, outside doors unlocked. [I let you checkout as late as you want, but that means I don't make it up there right away to clean, sometimes for days.] Come on guys, it's not THAT hard to figure them out. It says on the site I don't have AC, and it's the first thing I tell folks that want it in July and August... and I offer a refund up until the last minute if you don't want to stay. If a large family from Arizona wants to stay there to save money and go to the beach.... not the best setup! What I can't understand is why you felt the need to wash a wool blanket and a down comforter (you can't have needed them on THIS stay) and leave me a warped mess and a pile of feathers in the drier. After only 2 nights? Plus left over perishable food, recyclables in the trash with all the other waste [I HATE sorting through guests' trash to do the right thing- how hard is a separate bag for dozens of plastic water bottles?], all kitchen scrubbies thrown away. Think I bring a new set with me every time? We're supposed to be up here to celebrate and cherish the environment. Definitely not a place for dustaphobe neat freaks - see other similar comments. Choose a dustfree Motel 6 with one light switch and a view of the adjacent 7-11 next time- you'll be happier.

Owner's Response: Thanks for the nice review, the multiple guestbook entries [I never had anyone put one in as soon as they arrived, as well as when leaving!], and for leaving the place so neat. Hope you come back repeatedly.... [and thanks so much for not re-arranging the furniture! haha]. Chuck
