About Sheila Eckman
This is a small cabin built by my husband and son. Since my husband died in 2008, my son is especially grateful for the time he and his father spent there. I am retired from a variety of careers, including university work, physician recruitment, and non-profit management. I served 10 years on my city council and am now in my second term as county commissioner. My dog Winston accompanies me to the cabin and loves it there!
Sheila Eckman purchased this Cabin in 2001
Why Sheila Eckman chose McCaysville
Built by my husband and son. Great when you want to get away and just chill out. Read. Write. Watch SEC sports! Or take in local antiquing, hiking, rafting, tubing, etc. Not to mention some great eating.
What makes this Cabin unique
Affordable! I want to make a trip to the mountains accessible because it has meant so much to my children and grandchildren to be able to go. While not fancy, it is very comfortable. A great alternative. (Why pay for bedrooms you don't need?!)

Very nice secluded getaway, thank you for renting us your cabin.
Great place very cozy, good location to explore the surrounding areas.
So glad you enjoyed a Fernbank! You’re close-come again! 😀
Amazing cabin and experience
First off, Sheila was a fantastic host -- quick to respond to questions and very thorough in her instructions.
This cabin was perfect. Just the right size for my wife and I to feel cozy but not cramped at all. It has a lot of character.
The layout is great with the bedroom and bathroom upstairs, and the kitchen and a large living space downstairs. There were several games in the cabin we played (e.g. Scrabble, Monopoly, deck of cards). The kitchen was stocked with every cooking item we needed to cook a Thanksgiving meal. The back deck overlooked woods and a small creek where we drank coffee in the morning. Our favorite part was the neighbor's two very friendly and well-behaved dogs greeting us when we pulled up to the cabin.
It was very easy to get to, and only about a 20 minute drive to downtown Blue Ridge. I highly recommend this cabin!
Thank you! So glad you enjoyed our little escape in the woods. Come again!
It was very nice and cozy. A good place to go and relax.
We enjoyed our stay. Nice place to go and get away for a bit. We would love to come back sometime.
Glad you enjoyed a Fernbank! DO come again! Try all four seasons in the mountains! 🙂
Exactly As Described
I was looking for a place to get away from a big city and just be alone in the solitude of the woods. This was the place! Everything was exactly as described in the summary and I couldn't have been happier. Although it was raining and I couldn't enjoy the outdoors as much as I would have liked, I still managed to sit down by the stream and have a fire one night. It was completely relaxing! Just a few quick things to note: I have Verizon service and had absolutely no trouble getting a signal; and the home's Wifi was very strong. I was streaming and did not suffer any interruptions. The neighbor's dogs did come and visit, but they were very nice and not pesky (okay, the little black dog would have come in the house if I let her, but she wasn't pushy and listened to commands). The bed was comfortable and warm, and the towels were soft and plentiful. Make sure that you realize that there is no shower, just a tub, as written in the description. I didn't see even one spider, but I did keep the doors and windows shut so I didn't expect to see any. The only thing I would mention, and it was probably due to my ignorance rather than any fault of the owner, was that I had a dickens of a time getting the first floor to be warm. I was unfamiliar with the heating system, and followed all the instructions, but it wasn't until the second to the last day when I cranked the heat up to 80 degrees that I was comfortable on the first floor. In all fairness, it was rather cold outside when I visited, so I am sure that affected the heat situation. But I will reiterate again that once I turned the heat UP, it did get warm and stay warm. I just am not used to turning the heat up that high. This, however, did not impact my enjoyment of the cabin. One last thing, if you are looking for a cabin in this area, you cannot beat the value that this cabin offers. It is everything that you are looking for at an incredibly fair price. Don't hesitate, book now!
Thank you! This is the kind of response we always aim for! (The gas fireplace is great for quick, supplemental heat, if you don’t want to crank the Mitsubishi up to 80!) 😀
Beautiful property and house
When I walked in I could tell I was going to love it there. The house had all the essentials I needed for the couple days I was there. Unfortunately it rained a bit while I was there, but I was still able to get out and explore and do some hiking in the National Forest. I enjoyed the ambiance of the fireplace when I came back exhausted. The kitchen was well stocked for me to cook in. The bed was very comfortable. Overall, I would definitely recommend this cabin to singles and couples looking for a getaway.
So glad you enjoyed Fernbank! (We do aim to please.) I hope the rest of your journey to the mountains went well. Come again!
The property was perfect for a weekend in the mountains!
The home was clean and well kept. Sheila left great instructions/information for our stay.
Check blueridgemountains.com for activities in the whole region--from antiquing to mountain biking to live theater. Babyland General--home of Cabbage Patch dolls--is not far away, as is the "face jug" museum, near Helena, GA. Drives are beautiful. Whitewater rafting is a great experience for all ages, as is tubing! Both are available just 3 miles from the cabin. Fine dining in Blue Ridge. Mercier's Orchard, just a few miles away, is a popular attraction, too, with seasonal activities. OR you can chill out in the peace and quiet, by your own little creek.
