About Jim & Rori Draper
I am a retired Chemist-Programmer, now mostly doing professional wood-working and projects around our Ranch with my wife. Rori likes to quilt, reads pretty much a book a day, and has kept goats for over 20 years. Together, we enjoy dancing (swing & country) and travel, especially to Mexico and other Latin American countries. We relocated to Rice Washington after 25 years in Alaska, also having had a small farm up there. I am also an EMT and Firefighter in our local Volunteer Fire Department , doing both fire and EMS calls in our district. Rori is also active in various other Volunteer organizations around our small community. We enjoy meeting new people and cooking for our neighbors.
Jim & Rori Draper purchased this Cottage in 2003
Why Jim & Rori Draper chose Rice
After spending 25 years on a remote farm in Alaska, we were looking for a similiar experience, but with a full 4 seasons. This location has way fulfilled all of our expectations and then some. We enjoy a long, warm spring and fall, mild winters, and real summers. And best of all, things like to GROW here: ornamental trees, fruit trees, flower gardens, vegetable gardens, berries, hayfields, etc. We are also blessed with an abundance of wildlife, right out our windows, commonly including deer, elk, bears, cougars, eagles, and myriads of other birds, both seasonal and regulars.
What makes this Cottage unique
Privacy, but not too remote was also one of our requirements and that has worked well for us here. We are still about 20 miles from Colville (Stevens County Seat), which has most all of the services we require, but still only about 1.5 hours from Spokane with a major airport, endless shopping and world-class medical care.

Fantastic experience we will never forget
We have stayed at many vacation rentals over the years, and this one was by far the best. Jim and Rori have created a beautiful mother-in-law apartment attached to their farm house. The apartment is spacious, and most of all, BEAUTIFUL. Jim is a master woodworker, and has made absolutely mind-blowing furniture. Birdseye maple coffee table with walnut inlays and drawers. Tiger maple dining table. The kitchen had everything we could think of. We were there in January, and I loved making the place cozy with the Vermont Castings wood stove. Rori has been raising goats for 25 years, and taught me and my wife how to milk them. I had fresh goat milk in my coffee that morning. Jim showed us a few good hikes along their 300 acres of land. Their wonderful dog "Gram" tagged along as we explored the property. We had a wonderful time, and can't wait to come back! The house and property are amazing, but the warmth and kindness of the owners truly makes this head and shoulders above any other.
GORGEOUS FALL COLORS - FABULOUS VIEWS - FANTASTIC HOSTS
Jim and Rori have one of the nicest places we have stayed through the VRBO system. We are already planning a Spring trip.
These guys are just the greatest folks. They look after your needs and ask if anything is needed. Jim makes wood furniture in his shop. Bring a big truck and load something up.
We are looking forward to our next trip!
See you guys in the Spring!
A hidden gem
My wife and I can't say enough wonderful things about Jim and Rori and their beautiful home. We felt such at peace enjoying the guesthouse and it's surrounding property, but don't take our word for it. Come see for yourself....you won't be disappointed.
Perfect! Wonderfully secluded. Lovely, down to earth and gracious hosts. Beautifully serene.
Great communication before and throughout our visit. Truly a special place with beautiful scenery, wrap around covered patio for enjoying coffee while gazing across the canyon. Cozy and inviting leather sofa and wood stove with a great selection of books, movies and music. One of a kind art and linens keeping with the down to earth sense that this is home instead of a rental. Perfect for those who need some peace and perspective. Idealic for newlyweds or anniversary trips for quality time together. Writers and photographers paradise. Go and be inspired! Hosts are multitalented with care of farm and their individual craft. Folks you wish were friends and neighbors. We had a very busy schedule with a family wedding or likely we would have stayed out there the entire time. A new favorite with our family!
Bon séjour dans un endroit reculé et tranquille / Good stay in a remote and quiet place
We spent two nights in this cottage and enjoyed the charming and very quiet place. The wifi connection didn't work at first, but the owner then allowed us to surf on his own network and it worked well. The cottage is well equipped and functional. Everything was clean (except the fridge).
To visit the area, we recommend taking the (free) ferry between Gifford and Inchelium and eating at Stephanis Oak Street Grill in Colville.
Oh no! I'm sorry about the fridge!
Thank you for mentioning it - I've remedied the situation.
I'm glad you enjoyed your stay other than that.
A wonderful place
Our second trip to Jim and Rory's place, and of course it was wonderful and relaxing to stay there again. We highly recommend this spot, don't miss it. Thank you both very much for your hospitality. We plan to come back when time permits!
