About the property

Beautiful mountain home that sleeps 8. 2 living rooms. Gorgeous views!

The Bear's Bach (pronounced batch) is nestled in mature spruce-fir forest 12 miles south of Breckenridge in Placer Valley. You may ask where does the name come from? 'Bach' is a New Zealand term we picked up while living and travelling on the South Island, basically, it means a vacation hideaway. It's a place to recharge, reconnect with family and friends, and re-discover the natural world. And in the mountains, the bear imagery seemed to fit.

The expansive deck on The Bach provides a breathtaking view of two of Colorado's fourteeners (mountain peaks of over 14,000 feet)-- Mt. Bross and Mt. Lincoln. We are 11 miles to the Kite Lake trailhead of Mount Democrat; 4 miles to Quandary over Hoosier Pass; 7 miles to Mount Lincoln; 6 miles to Mount Bross. There is fabulous fishing in Montgomery Reservoir and the Middle Fork of the South Platte River. The Bach invites visitors in all seasons of the years. When you set foot in this wonderful mountain retreat, you will feel at home.

The Bach is tucked into a hillside with two bedrooms and bath on the main level and two bedrooms and a bath on the lower level. The floor plan upstairs invites apres-ski relaxing with a seating area that features a stone fire place and woodstove and flows into a dining room that seats 10 comfortably. The fully equipped modern kitchen will bring out your inner chef and the main living area opens onto an outdoor deck with majestic views.

The master bedroom on the main, upper level has a queen bed, vaulted ceiling, a desk and comfy couch. French doors open out onto the deck with mountain views. The second bedroom on this level has two twin beds.

On the lower level you'll find two bedrooms, one with a queen bed and one with a double bed and another living room that features a wood fireplace. This living room opens onto a covered patio and steps to our backyard fire pit.

You'll find many entertainment options at the Batch. The upper and lower living rooms each have 50" HD TVs and master bedroom has a 32" HD TV(Direct TV). On the main level you will find a vintage stereo system with 30" floor speakers, auxiliary inputs, and CD collection that spans many types of music. The Bach is equipped with wireless internet and includes a landline phone for emergencies and local calls.

At 11,000 feet The Bach is a beautiful mountain retreat. It is walking distance to Montgomery Reservoir and provides easy access to hiking, biking, fishing, golf, hunting, hot springs, and horseback riding. Our family's favorite pastime is skiing at Breckenridge as well as Keystone, and Arapahoe Basin. All are within easy striking distance. In winter months a 4-wheel drive vehicle is necessary throughout the mountain area.

We own and manage The Bach. We'd love to share it with you. If this description fits your needs, please contact us!

About Leslie

We have spent the last thirty years traveling the west, from Colorado north to Wyoming, and west to the Sierras while Evan studied the ecology of high elevation forests. The Colorado Rockies remain a special place for us. With our children grown we jumped at the chance to buy a home near where we rented for so many years. In the not too distant future, we will retire to our mountain retreat high up on Hoosier Pass. In the meantime, it is our pleasure to share our home with you.

Leslie purchased this house in 2015

Why Leslie chose Alma

Our home offers a private, high elevation experience with all of the amenities, but it is only 20 minutes from world-class skiing, dining, and shopping in Breckenridge. For us, it is the perfect mix of enjoying the radiant heat from a woodstove after a day of skiing and being able to enjoy a cocktail and great meal in town.

What makes this house unique

When you bring your morning coffee out on the deck, you will be watching the slopes of Mt. Bross and Mt. Lincoln turn pink as the early morning sun rises. The breathtaking beauty of the surroundings and close proximity to hiking, fishing, skiing/boarding, snow shoeing, cross country skiing and great pizza (the South Park Saloon in Alma) are a winning combination. The Batch overlooks Placer Valley, a valley with a rich mining history and a colorful past. We believe you will feel at home in The Batch and be inspired to explore.

A Cut Above Most VRBOs!!

  • 5 of 5

We rented this gorgeous 4-2, spacious Bear Bach cabin for our out-of-state family for our Spring Break ski/shred vacation. It's the closest AND nicest VRBO to Breckenridge without having to pay the Breck prices. And it's the closest VRBO to the Continental Divide where you are guaranteed a truly mountain experience whether it is snow, Spring flowers, or Aspen Gold and the wildlife! Only 20 minutes from the Bear's Bach to the Breck Gondola to access all 184 runs. And you don't have to get in that Breck Main Street traffic!

Having a 2-story with two separate living areas is ideal for large families with teens or small children and for adults who don't want to feel that the kids are underfoot. The cabin is and feels larger than most VRBO's that feel cramped for space. The bedrooms are good size and not too small. The large dining room is separate from the upstairs living area. We had such wonderful family meals at the very large dining room table.

And oh my, the mountain views are incredible with a feeling of quietness and serenity - so nice to return to after a day of skiing, snowboarding, or shopping in the Breck crowds. The owners, Leslie and Evan have thought of everything with such minute detail and appointments such as a basket of lip gloss, sun screen and band-aids, and adult and children's games. Kitchen is well stocked with spices and staples. I felt right at home at the Bear's Bach. Grocery store in Fairplay (Prather's Market) is only 15-minutes away and has a great organic food selection.

The Bear's Bach is really an all-round VRBO as there are wonderful outdoor activities very close-by such as hiking to an old gold/silver mill, trout fishing at Montgomery Reservoir or the Middle Fork of the South Platte River, mountain hiking/biking or riding an ATV in the nearby national forest. If you want to dine out, check out the rustic South Park Saloon in Alma, only 7-minutes away. All their food is delicious and home-made such as chicken or beef pot pie, burgers or pizza made to order.

The Bear's Bach is the perfect location for any type of family or friends' vacation for any time of the year. Such wonderful history about the 1850's gold mining in Placer Valley where this VRBO resides. We highly recommend Bear's Bach's as your main "campsite" for exploring this region of Colorado.

Thank you, Leslie and Evan, for sharing your beautiful home and hospitality with us.

we all had a great time. close to excellent hiking at Hoosier pass, 15min to Breck, and not in the middle of the crowds. The cabin is perfectly equipped and maintained. Leslie checked in with us to make sure we found everything ok and always responded if I had a question. l especially enjoyed the back deck grilling and taking in the view. plenty of room for kids to have their own space when they need it. I highly recommend Leslies cabin for a Colorado get away.

The Bear, lovely home, wish it was ours!

  • 5 of 5

We stay at the batch over spring break in March. What a beautiful home just outside of Alma. We loved the location, close enough to everything that we needed. Everything about our rental experience was spot on. The owner Leslie was a dream to work with. We particularly loved the living space upstairs with the open living dining kitchen concept. Every night after a day of skiing we would cook dinner, listen to the CDs provided (we loved the selection) and played games and worked on puzzles around the table. We found lots of puzzle selections to choose from, thanks Leslie. Rooms were comfortable and cozy. Deck at the back of the house was great with beautiful views. This house exceeded our expectations, just about everything you would find in your home is here at the batch. Do not think twice if you can't make up your mind about this home. I wish we could call this home ours.

You will not be disappointed I promise.

We will be back;

Leslie from Denver with family from California and Washington D.C.

Absolutely Amazing! Immediately fell in love with the Batch!

  • 5 of 5

The bear batch was exactly what some local Houstonians needed for a nice ski retreat. We immediately fell in love with the house as soon as we walked in. The location was so nice and secluded and the views were breathtaking. The split-level worked out perfect for our group when some of us wanted to unwind and take a nap and the others wanted to play games and chat at the beautiful dinner table. Location was close enough for skiing/activities yet far enough to feel away from the hustle and bustle. Leslie was absolutely a true delight to work with. She made everything so easy and simple. Her organization and instructions made everything stress free. The price for the house is more than reasonable and the amenities were not sparse! We will be back to visit the Batch and plan to make it an annual tradition. Thank you Leslie for having us, it was a true pleasure!! Cheers!!

Fantastic time at the Bear's Batch!

  • 5 of 5

This is an amazing mountain home with tons of room on two levels. It was perfect for our group of four friends who met for 3 days of skiing.

The Batch has every amenity you might want and the kitchen is well stocked. There’s a new large grill on the back deck that we used a lot! The view from the deck is quite spectacular, two 14ers, and the surrounding forest is beautiful. The wood stove kept us toasty every night and although there were only 4 of us the dining room table can seat 8 or 10!

It snowed every night so the skiing was great. We even booked it to Beaver Creek for a day in the trees.

We were thrilled with the home and we all want to return next year. Leslie was very responsive and really helpful. It’s such a comfortable home you won’t want to leave! Thanks again. Highly recommended!! We’ll be back.
