About the property

Fully Equipped w/ A/C, Washing Machine, TV, BBQ etc. Easy walk to local taverna

Villa Theodoros enjoys a privileged and peaceful location in the heart of the countryside, but is only 800m from the excellent village taverna (and the oldest olive tree in the world) in Vouves and 10 minutes drive from the beaches and many amenities on Crete’s North coastline. From its truly wonderful spot on the top of an elevated hillside, the private pool, many outside terraces, and the villa’s balconies all take in the spectacular far reaching views over a silvery olive grove covered valley to the sparkling blue Aegean sea in the north, Theodorou Island and Chania Town in the east, and the White Mountains in the south. Set in a colourful Mediterranean garden on a 4000 m² plot, with no immediate neighbours (except an occasionally used tiny chapel), Villa Theodoros is the perfect retreat for either romantic couples or small families who value their privacy.

As befits such a gorgeous location, the elegant French owners have thoughtfully furnished and equipped the villa with every modern comfort whilst incorporating the traditional Greek colours of blue and white throughout. The villa itself is painted white and has blue aluminium shutters, doors and windows. The pretty bathrooms have white suites and are fully tiled with blue and white tiles, and the comfortable living room has blue glass ornaments and accessories. The colour scheme keeps the villa light and airy during the long hot summer months, whilst complementing the lush blues and greens in the panoramic views. The spacious interiors have cool tiled floors and are comfortably furnished with wooden furniture that was hand crafted locally. In order to guarantee a relaxing stay, the villa is equipped with many items including TV, DVD and CD players, WIFI internet access for up to 5 devices (top-up cards for air-time will need to be purchased locally), electric cooker, a large fridge/freezer, a microwave oven, a dishwasher, a washing machine, iron, hair dryer, BBQ and A/C in the bedrooms.

The benevolent Cretan climate guarantees that, despite the delightful interiors, our guests at Villa Theodoros spend the majority of their time relaxing outside in the enchanting garden and pool area, enjoying the peace and quiet and the breathtaking vista. Taking centre stage is the good sized swimming pool that is surrounded by non-slip flagstones and flanked by a traditional barbeque/wood oven and well tended flowerbeds that feature a multitude of typically Mediterranean flora including colourful rose bushes, geraniums, lavender, cacti, bougainvillea, hottentot fig, hibiscus, and rosemary on one side of the villa and mature olive trees behind the villa and on the 2 slopes that drop away from the villa and pool terrace to the valley below. A seldom used dirt track runs along the west side of the garden and gate, but a white washed wall and high oleander bushes ensure privacy. A quaint chapel stands on the opposite side of the track adding a charming Cretan touch tto the surroundings.

An array of comfortable garden furniture on all of the many outdoor terraces and balconies invites you to do nothing more taxing than sitting back and taking in the views, either in the brilliant sunshine (or shade) during the day, or under the clear star filled night sky – with the lights of Chania Town twinkling in the distance. The dining area is framed by fuchsia bougainvillea, and is likely to be the focal point for many a holiday meal. With easy access to the National Highway as well as roads to the west and south coasts, Villa Theodoros is perfectly located for exploring Crete’s many and varied sites if desired. All in all, every detail from the very private house position, the pleasingly comfortable décor, and vibrant garden with gorgeous views, makes Villa Theodoros ideal for anyone seeking quality accommodation, in a quiet hamlet where it is easy to leave behind the everyday hustle and bustle, yet is perfectly placed for strolling to a village taverna for a delicious meal.

Car: necessary

A few minutes by car from Vouves, down a winding country road there is the small sea side resort of Kolyymbari which is famous for its excellent fish tavernas, as well as the beautiful Gonias Monastery and which has a large supermarket and many amenities..

From here you can access the Rodopou Peninsula which has lovely views and small coves. To the south and west of Vouves one can find the lovely town of Paleohora, which has 2 huge beaches and a promenade which is closed to traffic at night, the 3km long sandy beach at Falassarna, the breathtaking Elafonissi beach which has pink sand and turquoise water and the town of Kissamos-Kastelli. Kissamos-Kastelli has the largest fishing boat harbour on western Crete, from where you can take daily cruises to the stunning Gramvousa Island and Balos Lagoon. 7 km behind Kissamos is the ancient archaeological site of Polyrrinia which has fabulous views and ancient remains from Minoan, Roman and Venetian times.

10 minutes drive to the north east of Vouves is the beach village of Tavronitis. The long bamboo and conifer lined shingle beach has kantinas, sun beds and umbrellas, never gets very busy and it is even easy to find a quiet spot during the summer. There are many cafes and mini markets, as well as a good selection of relaxed tavernas set by the sea. The old Bailey bridge was built by the Italians and had fallen into disrepair with some sections that had collapsed. Lately this has been restored, and the bridge is now more pleasantly known as an ideal spot for bird watching, particularly at dawn and at dusk. The following birds have been seen at Tavronitis at various times of the year, but mostly during April and May for migrants: Sardinian Warbler, Little Egret, Cetti Warbler, Yellow Wagtail, Little Ringed Plover, Buzzard, Wheat Ear, Gold Finch, Stonechat, Marsh Harrier (Lammergeier), Barn Owl, Squacco Heron, Grey Heron, Glossy Ibis, Kingfisher, Night Heron, Little Bittern, Snipe, Common, Curlew and Wood Sandpipers, Hobby, Red Footed Falcon, Cory’s Shearwaters and Closer Shags.

Just 8 kilometres away is the coastal village of Maleme which has 2 supermarkets and numerous mini-markets, a pharmacy, a cash machine, a number of gift shops including a ceramic shop and a jewellery store, a newspaper and magazine shop, and many tavernas in the centre of the village and lining the beachfront. The long shingle beach has busier areas with sun-beds and umbrellas as well as quieter spots without amenities. Maleme is famous for the battle on 20 May 1941, during the Second World War. Thousands of German paratroopers landed near the Bailey bridge that spans the mouth of the nearby Tavronitis River and a fierce battle took place for control of the key airfield at Maleme. Close by are 4,465 graves in the German Cemetery, (occupying a position on the hill overlooking the old airstrip), mainly of very young men. Their remains were kept in the Monastery of Gonia in Kolymbari until the cemetery was founded in 1973. Close by to the deeply moving German Cemetery there is also a vaulted grave of the post-Minoan era that was discovered by accident in 1966. With its square shaped chamber, perpendicular walls 4m high, and an irregular roof in the shape of a pyramid, it is unique of its kind.

For those seeking a little more action, just a few minutes to east of Maleme are the larger villages of Platanias and Agia Marina which have long sandy beaches, water sports, numerous tavernas, cafes, shops, night clubs and archaeological sites. In addition to all of this, we must not forget the gorgeous Venetian town of Chania which is only 40 minutes away.
