About the property

2+ bedroom, 1 bath cabin on the shore of Lake Superior

Spirit Haven opens Memorial Day weekend and is available thru MEA weekend in October. Book your peaceful vacation retreat now!

Hand-built in the 50's by my father, MN artist and Grand Marais Art Colony co-founder Byron Bradley, this charming cabin is located right on the shore of Lake Superior, far closer than you can legally build today. Dominated by an imposing stone fireplace and fresco along the living room wall, this cabin was originally Byron's studio and summer retreat. Marriage (to Emma) and children (Lydia and me, Sarah) led to the need for a large deck and then an addition of another bedroom and new studio space in the 70s.

Today this rustic cabin boasts a sweet little kitchen with the highest quality cookware (Emma was the goddess of Williams Sonoma when it was located in downtown Minneapolis), a comfy double bed in the compact master bedroom, and a single bed in the old bedroom and another in the new studio area. An awesome deck that goes out almost to the water's edge (over it when the waves are big enough), a covered, screened-in porch that runs the length of the cabin, and a propane fireplace complete the wonderful ambiance that is our Spirit Haven.

Our cabin did not get a telephone until the late 70s, and it still does not have a tv, tho there is a WiFi connection for your use. The cabin does have a nice stereo and cd player and a wall of speakers with great reception to MPR via Houghton MI. It also has abundant light for reading. The bathroom is a 3/4 bath; there is a charcoal grill outside. There is a good sized hill to drive down to our parking area (sport cars with low clearance might have difficulty making it down the hill) and the walking path to the cabin from the parking area is on another, gentler hill. Those who need a walker or similar assistance to get around may have difficulty getting to the cabin, as well as negotiating the stairs both inside and outside the cabin. We allow pets at Spirit Haven, but there is a pet fee and they must be confined to their crate if you leave them at the cabin while you are away.

For those with concerns about their health and that of the planet, we strive to be as green as we can be. Your water comes from our well which serves the main house and is completely untreated and delicious. Cleaning products are chemical-free and all our paper products are made from recycled paper. We recycle all we possibly can and respectfully request that you help us in that endeavor.

We are located about 1.5 miles from the town of Grand Marais and there is hiking and biking right outside the cabin door. As the section of Hwy 61 to town is fairly level and has wide shoulders, walking or biking to town is easily accomplished.

What former guests have to say about Spirit Haven:

I am at home now, but my heart and soul is still there at Spirit Haven. It was a fantastic vacation experience and I cannot say anything negative about it. I have stayed in cabins for my lifetime, so do not expect perfect amenities, this place had everything we needed and was super efficient. My only regret is that we couldn't stay longer. - Pam

Spirit Haven was GREAT! The location couldn't have been better. We've rented lots of places outside of Grand Marais and my kids liked that the best. It's very well equipped with high end kitchen things. We were surprised the organ and piano well so well tuned. We enjoyed playing them. - John

This is an absolutely beautiful cabin. The kitchen is easy to use, the bed is comfortable and it is very tastefully decorated. Its location right on the lake is nothing short of divine. - Tim

This was our second time at Spirit Haven. We love it! It's quirky and cozy with a very well equipped kitchen. The screened in porch keeps rain and bugs away and the deck out over the lake is nothing short of amazing. - Geraldine

We have stayed at Spirit Haven numerous times. We prefer privacy over amenities. Spirit Haven meets our needs. The location is perfect and the deck is wonderful. - Michael

This was a perfect vacation home. My advice to any visitors to the north woods is to rent this place! - Roanne

We absolutely loved our stay. The cabin was perfect and the location could not be beat. - Joanna

Spirit Haven was aptly named. We had such a lovely stay. The location was perfect, right on the lake. Ample towels, blankets, etc. We had everything we needed. A very unique place, we so enjoyed the organ and piano too! - Nicole

About Saraphine Metis / Emma Bradley

Spirit Haven is my favorite place in the whole world. It is where I grew up and where I have my fondest memories. My father built the cabin in the 50s and when he retired, in 1996, he built my folk's retirement home on the hill above the cabin. My folks let friends and relatives stay at the cabin for a number of years, and then decided to rent it to supplement their social security income. My father passed away last June (2016) and my mother grew frustrated with the former rental agency, so she and I have decided to continue to rent our beloved cabin ourselves in the hope of making new friends and giving others the chance to experience 'the most wonderful place on earth'.

The photo is of my father, mother and sister in 1968, in front of the fresco in the cabin.

Saraphine Metis / Emma Bradley purchased this cabin in 1956

An amazing place! Cannot wait to return to spirit Haven!

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay at Spirit Haven. Wish we could have stayed longer! The combination of peaceful and relaxing, combined with the artistic beauty of the home are rare. Spilling over the rocks, tucked into the woods, away from highway noise, less than 2 miles to town, and right on the shore of Lake Superior. So wonderful! We loved the sound of the crashing waves against the rocks, literally below the deck that looks like a ship prow. We will return as soon as we can. The kitchen was well stocked, the rooms are comfortable, and the organ was a real plus.

Peaceful and relaxing!

  • 5 of 5

We had a great time here-property was exactly what we needed. Our kids were comfortable and loved watching "the big lake". Having no TV was amazing, and we loved listening to MPR. The Wifi connection was also good to have. We hope to come again!

beloved family cottage

  • 5 of 5

The overwhelming feeling at this lovely cottage (the pictures do not do it justice!) is one of having arrived home. From the family photo book on the coffee table to the artwork on the walls to the myriad creative touches throughout, you are aware - and grateful - that you're sharing something really special. And that lake......! Thank you Emma and Sarah, for opening your home, and your family's story, to us. It's hard to imagine a lovelier place to spend a long weekend.

An uncommonly lovely place to stay

  • 5 of 5

We loved Spirit Haven. It may not be for people who prefer hotel chains in which the experience is the same wherever you are, but it IS for people who appreciate a lovingly crafted cabin which was designed by an artist. Thoughtful touches are everywhere, from the gorgeous archway over the lake to the well-equipped kitchen, and the nicely chosen selection of books for all ages and tastes. I can't think of a better place to stay.

Comfortable bed, cozy cabin, crashing waves, awesome deck, sharp knives in kitchen. Idyllic sums up Spirit Haven nicely.
