A tranquil, rustic summer cottage ~ right on the ocean, that sleeps up to 8

Bedrooms 2
Property type house

About the property

4 bedrooms, 1 bath sleeps up to 6 - 8

Before you choose a vacation spot in coastal Maine, you need to decide what you want. If being on the ocean is your main priority than Lyford Cottage is the place. This rustic summer home is filled with the memories of happy vacationers from days gone by. The interior set-up is for a close knit group and offers great sleeping and relaxing spots. A queen sized bedroom and full bath is part of the 1st floor along with a kitchen, dining room with a view and a living room with a fireplace. The second level is an loft area with 3 sections, 1 containing a double bed and the other 2 have a total of 4 twin beds. You can even look down to the living room from this level. The peacefulness and simplicity of Lyford Cottage will bring you back year after year!

Rocky Shore: Lyford Cottage sits right above the rocky shore facing Blue Hill Bay. There is a path down to the rocks and many places to explore at low tide. The large tide pool in the middle of the rocks used to be made into a miniature harbor with boats and fish shacks, by one of the owners children years ago. It was something to see. Now, there will still be warmer salty water to dangle your feet in. A daily swim was part of the families activities but the fantastic view maybe enough for most vacationers.

Art: The living room was added as an art studio as painting was of great interest to the Lyford family. Though trees have grown up there is still a lovely, soft lighting at certain times of the day.

Family and Friends: The Lyford Cottage was always filled with family and family friends. There warmth, love and hospitality can still be felt when you walk in the door.

About Paula J. Dunbar ~ Dunbar Real State ~ Southwest Harbor, Maine 04679

Below is a poem written by the original owner of Lyford Cottage, describing her time at the cottage ~

Safe Haven

A place beyond the rounded,

blue-grey stones

where boats can rest and oars dry out;

where terns and cormorants

dive into a calmer sea past the heavy tides

where lobster boats putt-putt across the bay

checking their pots and moving on.

Ducks ignore them

swimming in a row, diving now and then

heads disappear and reappear.

Loons let out a hoot, not quite a laugh,

more like an harrumph.

The back bay moves more slowly

with the sea’s ebb and flow,

than at the sea wall where waves crash

and spill over.

The noon sun hits the water

in sharp, sparkled points

as though each light dances

on the edge of a ripple

and the whole bay becomes a sea of

illuminated visitors from another place.

A sailboat glides past the cove

heading for an island

so small only nesting sea birds stop by

to visit a tired pine

unanchored in the sandy soil.

Although small,

the island adds depth to the scene

of Blue Hill Bay across Duck Cove,

beyond far off pines, rooted more securely,

like a deep blue-green fringe of tree tops,

even in a foggy mist, crying out from afar,

.by Jean Lyford

Guestbook comments from the manager

Lyford Cottage is the perfect quiet side retreat for exploring Acadia and all of Mt Desert Island. It was so nice to be away from the crowds but close to many quiet side hikes (we especially enjoyed Valley Cove, St. Sauveur Mt., Wonderland Trail) and little towns (Southwest Harbor was a daily stop, with great cafes, shopping, and even a playground!). The setting of the cottage, right on the rocky shores, was amazing. Our kids (ages 6 and 9) spent many hours exploring the coast and tide pools right in front of the cottage while my husband and I enjoyed coffee and happy hour on the deck over looking Blue Hill Bay and the many islands....truly gorgeous! We loved the history of the cottage (owned by the Lyford's, a family of artists, for many, many years). The cottage is well maintained and stocked. Lots of room for a family to spread out. If you are looking for a quintessential Maine experience, I highly recommend staying at Lyford cottage. Our family's vacation here will not soon be forgotten!

Great location

  • 4 of 5

We've vacationed on MDI for years, but this is the first time staying here and we really enjoyed it. It's a very Maine-y place and we like that. The place had all that we needed for a stay with 5 people--including a grill and lobster pots to make some dinners. The location works great for going out to Acadia, Southwest Harbor or Bar Harbor. And you can beat sitting on that deck looking out over Blue Hill Bay right below you. Had a great time exploring the coastline when we weren't relaxing. And Paula, the realtor, was a breeze to work with. Definitely the kind of place you want to stay if you want a real Maine experience.

Great escape in a perfect spot!

  • 5 of 5

This is the real deal. Lots of windows overlooking the ocean, very private, and so much antique character! The deck on the back of this house may be one of the greatest spots we've ever had the opportunity to enjoy. The location is beyond beautiful. Only one thing: try to stay to one side going down the driveway if you're in a car or a minivan or you will scrape the bottom of your car. Once you're there for a day or so, you get the hang of it. But seriously, for anyone who wants to enjoy Acadia National Park and Bar Harbor, but have somewhere to escape at the end of the day, this is it. You'll enjoy this house so much you probably won't mind just hanging out there for a day. This was our honeymoon spot and it was simply perfect. We'll certainly be returning!

Perfect oceanfront cottage on MDI

  • 5 of 5

My boyfriend and I stayed here for a week at the end of August and absolutely fell in love with this cottage. The best part about it is the location -- directly on the ocean and on the quiet side of MDI. You can enjoy the stunning views from the deck and listen to the ocean (and the loons) right through your bedroom window. The cottage itself is rustic, charming, and full of history with old books and paintings. Lots of windows and light, very cozy, clean and comfortable. We hope to be back very soon! Thanks for a wonderful stay.

Owner's Response: We are always so happy to hear that our renters enjoyed the cottage as much as we do. It was the home of 2 artists and the paintings are mostly originals. The combination of the fantastic views and wonderful interior lighting make even novices want to paint ~ Please come visit Lyford Cottage, again!
