Grayson Highlands offers a plethora of hiking trails, as well as a replica of a mountain settlement that showcases local history. - From the cabin, downtown West Jefferson is less than 25 minutes away. You can explore the quaint streets to discover an array of shops and galleries, as well as many unique restaurants and breweries. Some of our favorites include Red Dog Bar & Bistro, New River Brewery, and Thong Summit Thai & Sushi, but you can find just about anything to suit your tastes. - Even closer to the cabin is the town of Lansing, home to Molley Chomper Cidery and the Liar's Bench sandwich shop. Also in Lansing is the historic Creeper Trail Park, where you can walk scenic trails and fish in the historic NC Heritage Trout Waters. The whole family will love it! - Ready for more adventure? Spend a day canoeing, kayaking, or tubing out on the New River. Bring your own boats and tubes, or journey out to one of the local outfitters to rent all the equipment you need. If you are visiting in the autumn, make sure to take your time and appreciate the fall foliage all around. - For our winter guests, take a day trip up to Boone for some fun on the slopes at Appalachian Ski Mountain. Ski, snowboard, snow tube, or ice skate—whatever your heart desires. Downtown Boone also has plenty to offer by way of shopping and dining, so take it easy and enjoy your time there. -------------------------------------------- Important Notes: - Pet Policy: Two well-behaved dogs welcome. Thank you for your kind review! We’re so glad you enjoyed the peaceful setting and had a chance to explore the local hiking trails and nearby towns. It sounds like you made the most of your stay, and we’d love to welcome you back anytime for another relaxing getaway!
Pet option did not apply. It was a bit of a drive to the nearest town for groceries, shopping, and restaurants but the town was very charming. We found the living room to be oddly arranged, not a comfortable layout.
We enjoyed our stay at Black Dog! This was our 2nd trip . We enjoyed the beautiful views, our ride into Lansing to Pie On The Mountain... fabulous pizza, our hike on the trail at the cabin and our trio to the New River State Park. We look forward to our next visit!
Loved having coffee on the deck each morning in peace and quiet. The cabin was awesome and comfortable; loved all of the windows. The drive to Grayson Highlands, West Jefferson were a little long but very beautiful. Hopefully will be able to come back sometime soon.

Reviewer Comments:
The cabin is definitely on the road less traveled but such a serene and lovely place. Don’t be nervous about the off the path road it’s easy to navigate even in the snow. We enjoyed all the comforts of modern day life and the gorgeous quiet of this little retreat! Would highly recommend. Our kiddos enjoyed the snow fall and built some fun sled runs amongst the gorgeous trees. The small town of West Jefferson is close by and worth the trip. Overall we would highly recommend this property.

Thank you for the lovely review and we hope you stay with us again soon!
Really nice space tucked into an excellent location between West Jefferson and Grayson Highlands. If you are looking for a good basecamp, this one is tough to beat. Loved being in a fairly secluded spot surrounded by trees and wildlife. It was cold while we were there so the fireplace was fantastic. The wraparound porch would be killer during warmer months. This would have easily been a five star location but there were two related issues that dropped our rating We missed the fine print that said by booking this property through VRBO, there would be an additional fee of around 9% added. This translated to around an extra 100 for our stay. The guestbook in the cabin said if we had booked directly through StayBlueRidge (who manages the property), we would not have been charged this additional fee. Which brings me to the second "ding" We spent a good deal of money renting this place including the junk fee. Considering that, the supplies provided were relatively barebones and you could smell it was "pet friendly". One roll of toilet paper per bathroom, no shampoo/conditioner, one roll of paper towels, no wood for the fire place, etc. In addition, another comfortable chair or two in the living room would really increase the comfort level. These issues probably would not have stung quite as much had we not already been frustrated by the junk charge but, here we are. Despite this, it is an overall great property.

Thank you for taking the time to share such a thoughtful and detailed review. We’re very glad to hear you enjoyed the location, privacy, wildlife, and that the home served as a great basecamp for exploring West Jefferson and Grayson Highlands. It’s wonderful to know the fireplace and wraparound porch added to your experience as well.
We appreciate your honest feedback regarding the booking fee and amenities. When reservations are made through third-party platforms, those service fees are set and collected by the platform itself, not by us or the homeowner. We understand how frustrating that can feel, especially when it impacts the overall value of the stay.
Regarding supplies, we do provide starter items to help guests get settled, and additional supplies are typically expected to be brought or purchased for longer stays. That said, your comments about comfort, furnishings, and overall impressions have been shared with the owner for consideration, as guest feedback is incredibly helpful in guiding future improvements.
We truly appreciate your kind words about the property overall and hope you’ll consider staying with us again—perhaps during a warmer season to fully enjoy that porch!

Reviewer Comments:
The location is very secluded and there is no view. However, it was absolutely beautiful. The large decks and porch swing were a great place for morning coffee and evening dinner. Wonderful restaurants in Lansing and West Jefferson are not too far. A little gem with a grill we found was Miller's Country Store/Helton Country Store. They have pizza, wings, and burgers. The house itself has some great but narrow hiking. The house has tons of windows great for taking in the beauty of the woods. Everything was super clean. The only issue we had was ants.

Thank you for your honest review. We will be taking steps to eliminate the ants. (They love to sneak in this time of year.) We hope you will allow us another opportunity to host you.
Lovely, comfortable house in a secluded peaceful setting
We really enjoyed our time at the house. It was clean and comfortable and gave our group ample space. The large deck was great for relaxing, we enjoyed watching the hummingbirds on the beautiful Bee Balm flowers across the front porch. Hiking trail behind the house provided a nice, quick outing while we had iffy weather. My only complaints were that there was a faint smell of cigarette smoke that was really only noticable when entering, like someone who used to live there must have smoked, and you have to pack out your own trash. The dropoff for trash is a 20 minute drive away and requires that you take a badge from the house to drop it off...and then you have to return the badge to the house to avoid a $100 fee. So unless you want to drive home with bags of garbage in your car, plan on an extra 40+ minutes of travel included in your departure. I feel like taking care of this should be included in the cleaning fee. It was definitely an annoying inconvenience that I think should be disclosed before booking, but ultimately would not prevent me from booking again.
A perfect getaway for a week in an amazing location centrally located in the middle of the cutest towns to visit , North Carolina, Virginia and Tennessee! Will definitely come back with hopes to stay longer! Thank you!
My family and I really enjoyed staying at the Black Dog cabin in Grassy Creek. It was very comfortable and nicely appointed with quick access to Grayson Highlands and the Mt. Rogers area. The cabin location was very peaceful and remote, which is exactly what we were looking for to take a break from hectic everyday life. We would definitely stay here again. Great check-in/out process and Stay Blue Ridge was helpful in accommodating a last minute change. Great experience, highly recommend!
This cute cabin is perfect for a getaway to the mountains. It sits on the side of a mountain with plenty of land so you have privacy. The only visitors we had were deer. The large windows in the house provided a wonderful view. The deck is massive - there is plenty of room for outdoor entertainment. We loved having the large fireplace for cozy evenings. The house is well equipped, clean, and modern. I would love to visit again sometime soon! We're thinking of going in the middle of winter just to sit by the fire and watch for deer!
