Siltcoos Lake:
The largest lake on the central Oregon coast is also one of the region’s best fishing lakes, especially for warm water fish including largemouth bass.
It also is one of the few lakes in Oregon where you can keep a wild coho salmon in season.
Siltcoos Lake is a sprawling 3,164 acres located between Florence and Reedsport in the wonderful dune country of the central coastline.
Siltcoos is one of the most celebrated largemouth bass fisheries in Oregon and is among those mentioned in our article, Best Largemouth Bass Fishing in Western Oregon.
You’ll find tons of good bass cover all over the lake here, including fallen trees, drop-offs, points, islands and numerous coves and several longer creek arms. There also are some docks, especially where there are a fair number of private homes along the banks on the west and north sides of the lake, many clustered around the communities of Dunes City and North Beach.
Bass will often move up into the shallower water during the spring, when they spawn just off shore, and they can be aggressive then. They will stage a bit more off shore at other times.
Crappie also like to hang out around structure and may be found in shallower water during the spring. Sunken trees and pilings are good places to start.
Also, the lake is known to have good populations of less-pursued species including yellow perch, sunfish and bullhead catfish.
Trout are not the primary quarry for anglers here, but the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife does stock a modest number of rainbow trout here. Look for those plantings to take place in late winter or early spring (March and April are good times to check the stocking schedule linked below).
Native cutthroat trout also live in the lake and its tributary streams and may be kept as part of your daily trout limit.
The coho salmon fishery here opens in October and runs through December. Fishing for these fish is usually not productive until significant rainfall draws in these large fish, which most often happens in November.
There are a modest number of coho caught and kept here, but it’s a fairly unique opportunity. Boaters catch most of the adult coho, often by trolling wobbling lures in the creek channels the salmon use to return to their home streams.
What’s nearby:
This home is a quick drive from multiple access points to the Oregon Dunes and ocean beaches including the popular access just out South Jetty Road, and the city of Florence is five miles north. The charming Old Town section of the city is filled with lovely shops, cafes, galleries, and restaurants. You will also be minutes from numerous trailheads for hiking or mountain biking. The coastal forests flourishing in Douglas fir and Sitka spruce extend nearly to the Ocean. Some trails wind up, over, and through sand dunes, offering hikers the opportunity to experience the unique natural wonders of this area. Bring your camera! Paddle Siltcoos River between Siltcoos Lake and the Pacific Ocean. This slow-moving, three-mile river is so ideal for paddlers that it’s a designated Canoe Trail. Take a scenic drive up Hwy 101 to Heceta Head Lighthouse where free tours are offered daily. Get your adrenalin flowing on a nearby dune buggy tour or with an ATV rental, or go crabbing from the Siuslaw Bay public fishing pier at the end of South Jetty road where crabbing is excellent from late spring until the fresh water from winter rains force the crabs out to the ocean.

Lighthouse Adventure
We very much enjoyed our stay at Deerhart Lakehouse. It is centrally located in Florance. The property had a fabulous view and was central to visiting the lighthouses on the Oregen Coast. The property driveway was a bit steep. The people at the management company were very helpful.
This house had a great view of the lake! There was plenty of space with the upstairs and the downstairs areas. The kitchen was fully stocked. The floors and bathroom were clean.

Disliked: Location, listing accuracy
This was a nice enough place but not quite as advertised. The downstairs living area is just another entire space that is completely separate from the upstairs living space making it difficult for the family to get together. Also, while there is a partial lake view, I was not able to identify any access to the lake which was disappointing.
House is clean and has everything needed including a great washer and dryer. A little further off the highway than I expected but easy to navigate. I would definitely stay here again.

Great experience
This was a great place to stay, very spacious and room for everyone. It was really nice having two areas for everyone to gather. The view from the porch was great to have coffee.
We love the Deerhart Lakehouse so much. It’s a wonderful property, great view and not too far from town. The separate space is perfect for our teens to get away from the adults.

Florance Vacation
Very nice setting overlooking the lake. plenty of supplies/dishes/cookware to prepare meals. Downside was the extremely low water pressure. Parking, entry and exit were difficult.
Comfortable ; nice location, clean, nice view, easy access to town and other places,. Everything we needed was there.
One thing - downstairs microwave didn’t work; would suggest more garbage bags and laundry soap
We had a fantastic get-away at Deer Hart. The lake view was spectacular on a cold but sunny January weekend. This is a lovely home that was perfect for five people (and a dog), but could easily accommodate more people. Two living areas allow for lively gaming in one area and great conversation in another. Bring the family.
This trip was planned to relax and enjoy our friends
We spent hour
It was spotless and we enjoyed the fully stocked kitchen.
For once I didn't need the cookie sheets, pans, etc that I brought with!
We spent hours on the huge deck enjoying the peaceful and beautiful view
Really liked the 2 living quarters. The house was clean and plenty of stuff for a long stay. Water pressure was really low. Took longer to bath and when someone downstairs was using water it barely flowed upstairs. Nice rooms and beds. Would stay here again.

Ok
Great views and access to the beach and activities. The water pressure was pretty terrible though, and at one point no water came out of the sink which was pretty frustrating considering how much it was to stay here. Also very sandwiched in to the neighbors house which was not clear in the photos.

Hello Hailey, thank you for your feedback for the Deerhart Lakehouse property. We apologize for the water pressure issues present in the home during your stay. Our staff had a plumber go out to address the water pressure issues you brought to our attention. We will make continual efforts to make sure that these issues will not happen again. It is our highest priority to keep the home(s) well maintained, comfortable and clean prior to your stay. We hope outside of these issues you enjoyed your stay in Florence.
Everything was great. My only comment is that it really isn’t 3 bedrooms. The lower level, which has full kitchen 1 1/2 baths, and living room is open to the bed area. The lower level would be great for older kids who can sleep on their own while the adults can have the upper level, with full amenities to themselves.

Cute house
Very cute house nice peaceful location I am a vacation rental cleaner I own my own cleaning company in central Oregon I think the house needs a little more attention to detail in cleaning floors had stuff all over them when we arrived crumbs in the drawers no organization in the kitchen and blankets etc were just thrown in the closet not nearly folded hand prints on sliding glass doors I believe little things make a big difference in cleaning overall lovely home
This is a great place to stay. House was very nice and comfortable, might have had been better if the front yard was clean ( weed’s). My small 8 1/2 pound dog slid down to a hole area in front of the home and I had to get her out myself as she is got weed needles all over her and stung by them and didn’t want to move no more to get out.
We did have a small atv trailer and getting to property is in a small hill and no turning point in it. Glad we had other 2 homes rented in the same area and there was space in in the other 2 homes.
Upstairs has 2 rooms awesome rooms, living room would have had been better with a sofa bed as I had 3 couples in my group and no extra room upstairs. Downstairs was great for the single guys in our group :)

Nice view, some fixes needed
The house has been nice; the beds are all comfortable, the view is lovely, and it feels spacious!!!
I would recommend replacing the peeler and can opener, they do not work. The dryer vent isn’t working properly and the master shower had a large ‘screaming noise’ (named by my kids) after it’s on for about 5 minutes. The electrical isn’t proper either on some of the lights (manager has been informed).
Also our daughter and dogs had ticks- would recommend anyone staying remove shoes, treat animals for ticks, and not play in the grass this time of year.
We did enjoy daily secluded walks on the road, the deck with views, and made good use of the space heater that was provided.
