The Space
Firmeza Art Déco
The architect’s house
The architectural movement of the Art Déco started in the city of Porto after the first World War (1914-1918) reaching its heyday in the 20s and 30s of the 20th Century. Marques da Silva (1869-1947) and his disciples are exponents of this movement.
Within this group of pupils José Ferreira Penêda (1893-1942) stands out - the architect responsible for the project of countless buildings in the central areas of the city. This artistic movement brought modernity whilst projecting the architectural vision of not only the structure of the buildings but also the decoration of its interiors and the furniture itself. Within the extensive portfolio of the architect José Ferreira Penêda, the inauguration in 1933 of the famous patisserie and tea room “Arcádia” at Praça da Liberdade stands out.
The architect José Ferreira Penêda was in charge of the project and construction of this building and it was his home, right in the centre of the city. Firmeza Art Déco has been fully renovated and refurbished in 2021 by his grandson based on Architect Filipe Marinho’s project (https://560architects.com/ )
The renovation of this 150m2 flat has preserved its original layout, focusing on the huge amount of natural light in all divisions. The floor and doors have been restored as well as the “iroko” wooden windows, the wide and high areas have been preserved integrating the nowadays commodities - like the thermo acoustic insulation, the air con, electric blinds, and the renovated WCs and kitchen which are fully equipped.
The flat is fully furnished and it has three bedrooms (one of them a 27m2 en-suite), two bathrooms, a living room, a dining room, a winter garden, a kitchen and a pantry. It has two balconies - one overlooking Rua da Firmeza and the city, and the other one overlooking a private garden area enclosed by buildings, inviting tranquillity and relaxation. In the en-suite you’ll find the same style of furniture that the architect José Ferreira Penêda has in his house in Areosa, Porto.
Located a short 5min walk away from the restored Mercado do Bolhão, Avenida dos Aliados, the metro stations of Bolhão and Trindade and the famous S. Bento train station.
